The Evelyn Room - The Evelyn Room EP

The Evelyn Room - The Evelyn Room EP
The Evelyn Room
The Evelyn Room EP
(Indie)

SOUNDS LIKE: Dark indie rock from Newfoundland.

WHY/WHY NOT: Whether it’s the long dark nights of Newfoundland winters which permeate the songs of The Evelyn Room or whether it’s something characteristically darker and introspective, the intense and serious sound produced on the Canadian four piece's self-titled EP leaves the listener contemplating matters infinitely more important than before whence The Evelyn Room was listened.

Despite the overt influence of the likes of B.R.M.C, Joy Division and Radiohead, the musical complexities and slow building climax inherent within each carefully arranged track also lends more than a tip of the hat to another outer Arctic Circle act in Iceland’s Sigur Rós, albeit it with a far rockier, direct and conventional end product. This is no more apparent than on the delightfully structured and performed "Close Your Eyes".

However somewhere along the icy and ball freezing 2,572 kilometre frontier which separates the relative musical outposts of Reykjavik and Newfoundland, a rockier component has been added to the mix. This concoction of styles and influences gives The Evelyn Room an intriguing mix and sound, and when combined with the dark and brooding lyrical delivery makes for a very enjoyable listen.

Live at the Verge - XM Radio

Posted by The Evelyn Room on May 30, 2009

Hey All,

Summer is almost upon us & music is in the air (like a Broadway musical...) We were recently lucky enough to be featured on the XM Radio show Live at the Verge which took part at the XM Studios here in Toronto. Live at the Verge was hosted by Jeff Leake and consists of a 5 song performance & a Q&A segment between each song. We used the opportunity to play a few songs from our EP, but also to play a couple of our newer songs which we haven't yet posted online. The new tunes sound slightly heavier in comparison to what we have posted so far... much heavier on the drums and distorted bass side of things. In the interview we get into talking about the progression of the music & songwriting as a band, and where our head space has been lately. We are pretty into & happy with the new tunes and hopefully your ears will agree with us.

A big thanks to The Verge for giving us a great opportunity and making the whole experience super easy going and relaxed, and I'd like to thank Steve in the booth for not getting mad at the fact that my “Big Muff” pedal hummed something fierce the whole time. (If the folks over at Electro-Harmonix ever read this... ha.. very likely... that's my plug for endorsements... ha..) There are a bunch of photos from the day posted on facebook if you want to check them out.

Hope you're all doing great & let us know your thoughts.
If you like the tunes tell your friends and help spread the word!
Cheers!

- Justin

XM Radio - Brown Bottle Sessions

Posted by The Evelyn Room on Mar 22, 2009
Hey - Just wanted to tell you about an event we were fortunate enough to be part of today.  Myself, Brad F., Ryan & our friend Bianca had the chance to play XM radio’s the Verge’s Brown Bottle Sessions as part of Canadian Music Week. The Brown Bottle Sessions are basically a whole bunch of bands/performers in 3 hours, playing live to air & for the most part strictly acoustic. Everyone plays two songs and the bands change every 10 - 12 minutes. We got to share the air today with some great folks such as Joel Plaskett & Matt Mays just to name a couple. Matt stepped it up a notch & played his tunes on the ukulele, which was awesome to see live!

It was a very cool experience and the good folks over at the Verge have posted a track from each artist on their youtube page. The two songs we performed were “Anywhere Than Here” and a new one called “You Win”.  The video link is posted below but you should definitely check out all the performances on youtube if you get a chance, tons of great music!

Hope your all doing great. Cheers!

Horseshoe Tavern Show Review

Posted by The Evelyn Room on Nov 21, 2008
We just received a fantastic review of our gig at the Horseshoe on Tuesday, November 11th 2008. It comes care of the music blog 'its not the band i hate its their fans'. If you check out the link to the blog there are also pictures from that night posted, reviews of the other acts, as well as a bunch of other good stuff for your reading eyes.

Below is an excerpt, but be sure to check out the blog by clicking here

Evelyn Room, Golden Hands..., Spiral Beach and High Dials @ The Horseshoe

It seems like NXNE2008 had only just finished, and now here we are, preparing for 2009.To celebrate the opening of the '09 festival's submission period, The Horseshoe hosted a free showcase on Tuesday night featuring three of my favorite indie(ish) bands on the current music scene as well as another band that I wasn't really familiar with, but quite enjoyed anyways. Of course, this week has been another massive slab of busy-ness and Tuesday seems like such a loooong time ago, but we'll see what I can remember.

The one band that I didn't really know was The Evelyn Room. They were a somewhat mellower band that likes to combine elements of spacey pysch rock with a slight alt-country feel to create a sound that is similar to what Ryan Adams or
Chris Isaac might sound like if they came out in the late sixties. Vocalist Brad Fillatre bellows quite the smokey croon that works well with the subdued shuffle of the drums and bass as well as the ringing echo of the guitars. The songs sounded smart and honest, while the instrumentation seemed very accomplished for such a relatively new band. Apparently their performance at this years NXNE earned them quite a bit of respect and recognition because there seemed to be an impressive number of people in attendance who were familiar with their songs.
