S (born Steven Simpson in Nova Scotia, Canada) is a music producer and Alternative Hip-Hop Artist who currently lives in Hamilton, Ontario.
Growing up in rural Canada, and being the only visible minority within a 40 KM radius (also for most of his high school years) allowed him to be influenced by many genres of music and elements of pop culture, making an effort to fit in. This might be part of the reason why his brand of "Alt-Hop" is highly original and attracts listeners from all walks of life.
On his Got a Love Woman Blog he explained it by writing, "I'm always going to be different and I’m okay with that. I grew up being the black guy, which had benefits and disadvantages, even though I’m half white. I've had a black kid call me a white people lover. Then I found out that on my white side, I’m a descendant of The Métis, which are a half-breed of the first European settlers and Aboriginals of Canada. I’m very proud of my blended culture. I except who I am and I’m empowered by knowledge that I’ll always be different, it will always make me crazy and you can hear that in the music.”
His production style varies from ragging guitars, mixed with soulful vocal sampling to club sounding synthesis mixed with organic elements. After five years of producing hip hop artist in basement project studios to producing rock bands in major studios, S decided to record “Got a Love Woman” a self produced song that featured him performing keyboards, guitars, singing and rapping vocals. On the popular iLike.com music website (Used only for posting music to actually friends on Facebook) “Got a Love Woman” launched his fan base from a modest 2300 to over 21 000 in a just a few days. S quickly responded by producing the Never to Forever EP, which went on sale in November of 2008 and expanded his production company into a label.
The success of The Never to Forever EP has inspired this once behind the scenes player to stand center stage. S’s lyrics connect him with fans around the world, whether being recited with thoughtful rap verses or singing catchy hooks, they shine just as bright as his fierce alternative hip-hop production style. Never scared to say hi, he keeps up with his fans using his many social networks. S has recently released a slew of remixes featuring him and other artist as well as producing a few episodes of a podcast featuring his recent studio work. After enjoying his first summer as an independent Canadian artist, working out a live show that includes him doing live programming, playing guitar, singing and rapping, S is now heading back into the studio to finish up his first full-length album which will prove why he is next in line to make the game his and change it to something everyone truly has love for.
