Enjoy Your Pumas is a five-piece indie rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Blending soaring guitars, atmospheric piano and powerful female vocals with an intense rhythm section, its sound is akin to Esthero fronting a Britpop band covering Sigur Ros. Since forming in the summer of 2007, the band has recorded Ink The EP with noted Winnipeg producer Ryan McVeigh (Consumer Goods, Boats!). Its lead single, “Less Enthused”, reached the Top 10 on 92.9 Kick FM, Winnipeg’s indie station.
Singer Rosie Blais' captivating vocal style recalls that of Metric’s Emily Haines or Land of Talk’s Lizzie Powell, while her stream-of-consciousness lyrics will get caught in your head for days. Often described as an “old soul,” she is in fact the youngest member of the band. Guitarist/pianist Ian Jeffrey and bassist Marc Gomez have been involved in numerous Winnipeg bands over the years, while guitarist Josh Benoit is well known as a score composer for short films. His eight original songs and score for Chad Tremblay’s award-winning short A Reasonable Man hold the perfect blend of nostalgia and subtlety. In 2008, the band found a kindred spirit in drummer Luke Janzen. Having performed in various settings with pop artist Jodi King and with local rockers, The Liptonians, the versatile musician brings a new dynamic to the Pumas' sound.
Already profiled in numerous mediums (including a CBC Radio 3 spotlight on Winnipeg’s music scene), the band is currently prepping its debut full length. To bridge the gap, the quintet is set to re-release Ink The EP to a wider audience in September. This re-release will include three new, downloadable songs produced by McVeigh. The band also contributed to an upcoming Neil Young tribute album compiled by Winnipeg label Grumpy Cloud Records. The Pumas tackle the title track from Young’s 1975 album Tonight's the Night, and their haunting rendition will give you chills in all the right ways.
