Hemsworth composed less than twenty songs over a fifty year period. But his works were carefully crafted, and sometimes so singable and eminently "Canadian" that they came to be regarded as folksongs. "The Blackfly Song" has been sung around campfires for years, while "The Wild Goose" and "The Land of the Muskeg" stirringly capture the loneliness and grandeur of the Canadian wilderness. Hemsworth’s songs were widely recorded, by the McGarrigle sisters and others, and frequently used in National Film Board productions. An animated version of "The Log Driver’s Waltz" proved one of the NFB’s most popular productions in recent years.
