The Will Austin Escape

Montreal, QC

So, why “The Will Austin Escape”, you might ask? Well, it started as a bit of a joke, as so many things do, but then turned briefly more serious... Will was booked to play a solo set the night before his intended departure from Vancouver for Montréal, and escape was certainly on his mind... however, due to an incident wherein he was savaged by a police dog for writing love letters on an abandoned building, the “escape” became more of a question than a statement... fortunately, our hero was finally able to flee eastwards, with all charges stayed, the dread Montréal winter missed, and some gnarly scars and strange stories to show for the whole ordeal. As far as stories, Will holds the words of the late Hank Williams close to his heart : “A song ain’t nothing but a story put to music”. The lyrical content of The Will Austin Escape alternates between fantastical, whimsical epics, lysergic bursts, and blues rooted in the truth of life’s struggles. “The struggle is to stay true to your instrument while avoiding being trapped in the clichés. To recognize and draw from the history of the guitar while maintaining a distinct voice as a player and songwriter is tricky, but its beautiful when it comes together, and can make for strange and timeless music.” - Will Austin
