Drawing comparisons to both Billie Holiday and Feist, Canadian artist Sarah Hiltz is a paradoxical blend of old world and modernity. She’s been praised for her ability to tell a story through song, but isn’t afraid to take risks when she performs.
This fusion of contrasting qualities is demonstrated on her new release How Many Fires. Sarah’s first full-length release shows her wide range of ability: she writes, plays, sings, and produces. A solid collection of original songs displays cunning word play, subtle allegory and simple honesty—devices typical of Sarah’s writing style.
Far from being a one-woman show, however, How Many Fires features performances from some of Chatham Kent’s finest musicians. With instrumentation that may surprise some, Sarah takes the folk singer/songwriter label beyond the predictable, employing a horn section, string arrangements—even her kitchen mixing bowls—to help bring the songs to life.
With the release of How Many Fires, and a new crop of tunes underway, Sarah is taking her music on the road. Look for her on tour across Ontario this fall. In the meantime, check out one of Sarah’s Lambton Kent shows.
