Portico is Greg, Trent and Lyn (that's me). Greg and Trent have been playing music together since they were pre-teens. They've been playing together long enough that they were once in a band called Sweet Revenge, a name for which the only excuses are youth and social isolation. They played covers of Freebird and Whole Lotta Love. I met Greg in 2003 when he was the tech in a UVic developmental bio lab and I needed someone to teach me the ins and outs of the mysteries of Polymerase Chain Reactions. The 3 of us didn't start Portico till 2004 when we were all in Vancouver together. In the 5 years since, the band has had different line-ups, including Marty Rollins (ex-The Approach and current guitarist of Owl Drugs) and Mimi Mahovlich, bassist, poet, and soccer player extraordinaire. Right now we're just the 3 of us, struggling to write music that we're proud of. As for me, I seem to love making songs about battles and Canadian history and I'm trying to convince the guys to bring these gloriously together by writing and releasing a 45-minute one-song album chronicling Canada's role in World War 1. So far still in convincing mode. Maybe I'll abandon this mission and write love songs like everyone else. Now for a more formal bio:
Portico is a hard-working band. They formed in June 2004, played their first show 3 weeks later, and recorded their first full-length album Shape To Form in October of that year. Shape To Form was released in November 2005 and chosen as one of 2005’s best records by Vancouver’s entertainment weekly, The Georgia Straight. In 2006 they recorded their second full-length, Progeny Blues, and released it in 2007 to wide acclaim including “Critic’s Pick ” lists in NOW, Zunior, and Wolves, Hawks and Kites, and 12 weeks on the CBC3 Top 30. They’ve toured Canada extensively and love playing live. Their third release, First Neighbours, has been widely hailed as one of the best releases of 2009.
