An extensively schooled musician, Lampshade is a pianist by trade. Through the use of various keyboards, drum machines, and samplers, Lampshade single-handedly creates the music of an entire ensemble. Lampshade's material is lush with elements of organic jazz combined with progressive electronic nuances that are infused with synths, samples and drum machines. The result is a cohesive combination of grooved- out urban jazz. Modern Behaviour is a no-filler gem of downtempo, funk, and broken-beats. Especially impressive is his knack for incorporating soulful vocals into the mix.
As Lampshade, Paul's performance still revolves around the keys but has him experimenting in live control of synth modules, midi controllers, and other relevant electronic hardware.
Lampshade's training in both traditional and future music synthesis has enabled him to put out music that is both progressive and accessible. This, combined with his ability to perform his material live makes him a Canadian artist to watch for in the latter half of 2005.
In addition to his material to be released as Lampshade, Paul has also done several contracts abroad as house pianist and trio leader. He has toured extensively throughout Canada, and has also appeared on stages in concerts and club dates throughout the United States, the Middle East and Europe. Some performance highlights include concerts with Clark Terry, Ed Shaugnessy and Phil Nimmons.
