Just two months after picking up a guitar for the first time, Ottawa's Kirk Ramsay adopted the name Giant Hand, and was playing his first ever show, opening for Vancouver band, Immaculate Machine in the basement of a record store. A month later he found himself opening for Born Ruffians. For his third show Kirk was invited to perform at the prestigious Ottawa Bluesfest. Over the years since, Kirk has garnered opening slots for Daniel Johnston as well as a number of high-profile Canadian acts, including Handsome Furs, Ohbijou, Timber Timbre, and The Acorn.
2009 was a hallmark year for Kirk Ramsay/Giant Hand. Following the release of his debut full length album, Coming Home, MOG.com raved: "Giant Hand is one of the most interesting musicians to come out of Ottawa in recent years, and Coming Home is among the best albums of the year in Canadian music." Giant Hand was also nominated in three different categories in Ottawa Xpress’ “Best of 2009” poll, including Best Act, was listed as one of the top acts of 2009 in I(Heart)Music’s “Hottest Bands in Canada” list, and landed the front cover of Ottawa Magazine's Winter issue.
So far in 2010 Giant Hand has toured across Ontario and Canada‘s East Coast as well as shows in New York City and Vermont. He was interviewed for MTV News’ “On The Radar” played shows at Canadian Music Week, NXNE, Pop Montreal and has finished recording a new EP, titled Starting as People, with The Acorn's Rolf Klausener, which is set for release in early 2011.
