The leader of the psychedelic/proto-punk outfit, Simply Saucer (which also can be heard on NMC) Edgar Breau's solo output is powered by a Grit Laskin acoustic.
Edgar Breau is a singer/songwriter hailing from Hamilton Ontario, Canada. His first experience in the recording studio was with Dan and Bob Lanois in 1974 at the basement studio called Master Sound Studios in Ancaster Ontario where the siblings lived with their mother. At the time Edgar was the singer, lead guitar player and principal writer in the futuristic punk/psyche band Simply Saucer. Founded in 1973, Simply Saucer was playing what could only be described as groundbreaking rock and roll music. Influenced by artists like the Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, the Stooges and British prog bands like Soft Machine and Hawkwind, Simply Saucer were perhaps the first Canadian band to perform what would later come to be called proto punk music, joining rock pioneering artists like The Modern Lovers, Television and Patti Smith.
The six demos recorded at Master Sound were in a style of music ahead of its time and the major record labels in the country declined to sign the band to a recording contract. The six demos recorded at Master Sound were in a style of music ahead of its time and the major record labels in the country declined to sign the band to a recording contract. It would only be much later that they would see the light of day. In 1989 "Cyborgs Revisited" was independently and belatedly released as a limited edition vinyl recording. It included the original 6 tracks along with a now legendary live show recorded atop Hamilton's then new Jackson Square Mall. Critical acclaim followed and continues to grow, culminating in a prominent place in CBC journalist Bob Mersereau's "The Top One Hundred Canadian Albums". Finishing #36 was a staggering achievement for a band that never had a commercial release of their music at the time they were together.
Using the American underground folk techniques of such artists as John Fahey & Robbie Basho, and the UK psych-folk songcraft sensibilities of such acts as Syd Barrett and John Cale, Breau has crafted a stellar catalogue of material on his three solo recordings.
Breau's long lost recording from the late eighties/early nineties, Shadows of Ecstasy is a cool jazz/psyche folk rock album featuring Simply Saucer bassist, Kevin Christoff, former Crowbar and King Biscuit Boy drummer, Paul Panchezak, harmony singer, Compton Roberts and jazz stylist Jeff Bakalar on electric guitar. Edgar plays acoustic guitar and some lead guitar. It is newly released on Flying inn Recordings and is currently available as a digital download and on CD Baby.
Canadian Primitive a compilation of songs, from the mid eighties to early nineties, released on Songhammer in 2004, was recorded at Grant Ave. Studios and features the previous record's lineup with the addition of Mike Daley on electric guitar. It was produced and mastered by Paul Riemens.
Edgar's latest release is entitled Patches of Blue and features a stellar cast of musicians in support, including Bill Dillon ( Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell), Brian Grifith (Daniel Lanois, Willie Nelson), Ed Roth (Ugly Ducklings, Rick James), Colinna Phillips (Bruce Cockburn, Marc Jordan, Alice Cooper, July Black) and Simply Saucer bassist, Kevin Christoff. Recorded over a five year period at Michael Birthelmer's Pine Street Studios it is a cross - genre collection of 12 songs on Flying Inn Recordings.
