Today on Lanarama: Foodie Thursday! Your Favourite Discontinued Foods

Posted by Lana Gay on Jul 29, 2010

Remember the Shamrock Shake? Crystal Pepsi? Orbitz? The McRib?

It can be a sad day when a food item you love becomes discontinued.  Food Fads come and go, but the ones you love remain in your mind forever.

What is your favourite discontinued food item?
Have you done anything to try and revive it?

Coming up, a great tale of juice devotion from Aidan Knight, and Shane Nelken of The Awkward Stage, shares his love for The Wig Wag

    We need an episode that's all about restaurants that have closed down! Oh Pizza Pros.. I miss you, sure you were a pizza joint in a small house in a small farming town, but you made the absolute best pizza I ever had in my entire life, nothing will ever compare..

    I miss crispy M&Ms, my sister misses vanilla coke

    I remember there used to be caramel chocolate chip rice cakes that Quaker used to make. Sadly, that deliciousness doesn't exist anymore. Made me sad, I used to eat them all the time.

    Also, sundae-flavoured Smarties. Loved those things, and then they vanished.

    Mmmm, McRib

    Anyone remember McDonald's pizza? When we could buy cherry coke in Canada.

    I can't remember anything right asides cherry coke right now, it'll come to me though.

    no favourite discontinued foods...

    only foods from back home that aren't available in Canada. like stinky tofu. there used to be a store or two in the lower mainland but all have been forced to close due to - surprise - the smell.

    (I'm sure eating stinky tofu isn't classy.)

    @AofA

    The #1 thing I ask of people going south of the border is to bring me some cherry coke (among other variations of coca cola).

    I also miss Apple Jacks. Those, too, still exist in the US of A, but no longer in Canada ... That I know of. At least not in SK.

    Coke Blak

    I may be the only person in the world to love Coke Blak, but there it is. Sometimes I mix Kahlua and regular coke to simulate the flavour (pretty close, actually).

    BEEP!!

    I miss beep. It was a delicious drink that the milkman would bring to our door in the morning. but now it is gone...

    I live in Saskatchewan, but a friend of mine moved to NovaScotia and he says that BEEP is alive and well there.

    I want Beep!!! all the kids were hooked on it.

    We used to get the yummiest lychee jelly candies, along with muskmelon, mango, and some other flavours, at our local Asian market, but alas, no more. WHAT HAPPENED?

    Also - another Crystal Pepsi lover. I wonder if I would like it now that I'm all grown up. It makes me sad that I will never know.

    I remember Wig Wags!

    and there was another chocolate bar that I used to love, that had peanut butter and jelly in it, on a wafer, surrounded by chocolate.  Yes, I know it sounds horrible, but c'mon, I was a kid!

    Also, for a verrry limited period of time, I remember being able to buy - wait for it - fruit-flavoured potato chips.  Seriously.  Grape and cherry and stuff.  They were, as you might imagine, horrible.  Even for a kid with weird taste.

    My former McDonald's eating self missed McDonald's personal pizzas.  I never noticed when they quietly disappeared off the menu, but one time may 7 or 8 years ago I suddenly remember them and was sad to realize they were no longer available.

    25

    Oh How I Miss Them.

    Number one is Trader Joes' Soy Chorizo/Potato Taquitos.  They were very flavorful.  Excellent with Salsa  too, of course.

    A close number two is an ice cream flavor Baskin Robbins had out for a while which then disappeared.  Happy Camper.  Vanilla ice cream with peanut butter swirl and granola trail mix.  Best ice cream I've ever had.  When it went away their explanation was that it was a seasonal flavor and those come and go.  But that season has passed several times and it never came back.    I wrote several emails to their headquarters but I never heard back.  Maybe I shouldn't have started both emails with the words "How dare you!"

    Now I realize I can create it myself at Cold Stone but Cold Stone's ice cream is weird.  Like too gooey or something.  I've tried but it's not even close to Happy Camper.

    altoids and macintosh toffee bars

    i have recently noticed that stores stopped selling Altoids, as well as macintosh toffee bars. you can find bags of hallowe'en candy-sized, individually wrapped toffee pieces, but no more regular, chocolate bar-sized ones. I had given up all hope on altoids after my favourite corner store had told me they were discontinued, but there seems to be an endless supply at the stores on the BC ferries. maybe they bought many packs, but the true altoid lovers are the only ones that purchase the curiously strong little mints. now they're curiously gone?

    @krib

    Wikipedia describes it better than I can.

    "From a distance, the odor of stinky tofu is said to resemble that of rotten garbage or manure, even by its enthusiasts. In some instances the taste has even been compared to rotten meat. In spite of stinky tofu's smell, most say the flavor is surprisingly mild. It is said the more it smells, the 'better' its flavor.[2] Some few people have compared it to the taste of blue cheese.[7] It has also been compared to foie gras."

    we call it stinky tofu not to advertise, but affectionately... and to call it anything else is an absolute lie :p

    Brach's Red Twists!

    I'm gong to keep this short because I've been known to rant on this topic.  Brach's Red Twists were my favorite licorice of all time.  Nothing else tastes like it, and I miss it terribly.  I used to bite the ends off of it and use it as a straw when I went to the movies (usually with cherry coke, naturally).  Thanks to Twizzlers, however, most licorice mass-marketed in the US now tastes like plastic-flavored Red #5.  Ugh.

    the first prize I ever won of the radio was a McDonalds pizza!! Soul Asylum's Runaway Train was at the top of the charts at that time...

    @talundh - Discontinued the full bars? How sad, I love that hard toffee....bought a bag of the Halloween sized ones, blech..Guess I'll have to take the ferry.

    I know someone on the blog remembers Beep! fruit drink (came up before somehow). And... This is pretty obscure but... I miss Jean LaFoot's Cinamon Toast Crunch (a doomed Captain Crunch spin-off - Jean LaFoot is his pirate antagonist). Although it's been so long since I had some, I doubt It's as good as I remember it being.

    Cherry coke has been mentioned several times on the blog, and I share that pain.  Fortunatle I miraculously found some at a Fairway Market in Vic yesterday.  It was very obviously bought elsewhere and then driven across the border and it cost 3 bucks for 2 cans, but it was so worth it.

    But I also miss Vanilla Coke, Wild Cherry Pepsi, and Pepsi Twist.  Pepsi Twist was the best summer pop ever.  Also vanilla and cherry coke went well with rum.  Why can you buy vanilla vodka but not vanilla rum?

    President's Choice can be frustrating. They're always making new stuff and then stopping.

    The DQ closed in Whitehorse almost two years ago and it was sorely missed.  I hid one dilly bar in the back of the deep freeze at home and told everyone in my house to leave it be as it was the "last dilly bar in the Yukon."  Its still there, growing ever so wise with time

    A discontinued beverage I wonder about to this day

    Not something that any one of you have ever heard of, except maybe for MusicSoop, but there used to be a beverage company here in California named Bierley's.  When I was a child, and we'd leave the cool Bay Area and drive into the hot Central Valley, where I am now, my parents would let me have a bottle of Bierely's Non-carbonated orange drink.  It was wonderful and a favourite.  They also had other flavours like cola, grape and the first chocolate carbonated drink that looked like chocolate milk.  But when I returned to California in 1988, it was gone, and I've never found out whatever happened to the company - and that great orange drink.

    Funny how childhood memories still linger.

    To the disappointment of sugar-charged fruit-drink lovers everywhere, the people at Farmers Co-Operative Dairy Ltd. in Bedford confirmed Friday they are indeed proceeding with plans to discontinue Beep fruit drink.

    "It is sort of a sad day. Lots of people are nostalgic about the drink. Lots of us here at Farmers are very sad to see it go," Derek Estabrook, vice-president of marketing and business development, said in an interview.

    Bireley's (dear mcfflyer @ 177)

    Still available in Japan. See this.

    Import it yourself (ya right)? (They bought the trademark, so who knows if they're not producing it in umami version.)

    Let me check my calendar.  Um, not sure about that one.  Jon & Phog Phest 2 the week before, and Mosport the following week, my regular camping holiday.

    Are you doing Phog Phest?

    No, Lana, it's true

    Tim Tams

    I just realised that there was talk of Tim Tams but not of the Tim Tam slam! Bite off both ends of a tim tam and slurp hot tea through it, once as the tea hits your lips you better slam it back otherwise it'll dissolve and fall into your cup.

  227. krib

    @CDNz1

    I'm not going to make PhogFest, unfortunately.  It's 5 days before my exam and I still have so much work to do.  Also, between now and October I'll be living on about 1/4 of my usual cash flow.  I'm going to have to cut several shows out of my plans, and that is one of them.  I'm still planning on TM&TT, and I already have my ticket for Dan Mangan.  If you guys aren't catcthing the Sadies, I'll wait and try and hit them up on their next tour.  Probably a better idea anyway, since I refuse to miss Holy Fuck or Basia Bulat.

    Pizza Bundles

    Used to get pizza bundles from M&M meats. I'm not sure if they have been discontinued, but havent seen them around in years. They were always a tasty afterschool snack; the kind that you HAD to share but didnt want to. Kinda like bringing a plate of nachos out to a coffeetable.

    O'Grady's Sour Cream & Onion chips!  There was so much flavour powder on those chips you almost couldn't lift them, and they were ruffled.  They're only now starting to create rippled/ruffled flavoured chips again.

    Apparently putting an O' in your chip name is a sure sign of being discontinued

    Ooh, lookee, the premier of Ontario is buying me off...

    ...with my own money!

    Just received a cheque for $100 (two more to come in December and next June (this one, dated 27 July, is referred to as having been paid in June 2010!)). This is (after some bee-ess about the economy in the covering letter) to help ME in MY transition to paying the recent Harmonised Sales Tax, rather than the two previous, fed and prov. Like I said in the first sentence...

    I AM SO GRATEFUL.

    @Tandy

    will be in Whistler this weekend, unfortunately missing their set and the tribute to China. A bunch of us went to Kits for the Saturday show, much better than being in the heart of the beat in English Bay..actually, last night we headed to Kits after Dan's set, there was ample time.

    Dan went on at 8, I walked up to the side of the stage at 7:55 and was right at the barrier on stage right...once the set started there were lots of people behind me, but people weren't crowding the steps before music started..I'd suggest trying to go there if possible
