Today on Appetite for Distraction: Stay Classy R3 Listeners

Posted by Lisa Christiansen on Jul 29, 2010

Coming Up: Leif Vollebekk

I’m not exactly sure who is excited about the 2nd season of Jersey Shore, but I know they/you are out there. Tonight it kicks off in all its low-brow splendour.

Now while I’ve been known to enjoy many a reality show, the 10 minutes I watched of this one did nothing for me…well, made me sad. I really don’t care how depraved the entire cast is, I just hate what they wear.

The other day I received my copy from Amazon of “Classy – Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady.” On the back cover under Highlights: “How to dress sexy without looking like a skank.” Score zero for Snooki.

On today’s show, your thoughts on being Classy. I think this works for both men and women. Author Derek Blasberg looks ever so dashing on the back cover in a suit and bow tie.

ARE YOU CLASSY?
WHAT DOES CLASSY MEAN TO YOU?

Let me know.

Also on today’s show: Missing Links with John Paolozzi.

    Classy, to me, means people don't think negatively of how you dress.  Or that you could walk into a bank or somewhere professional and not feel out of place.

    A tshirt and jeans can be classy... as long as the jeans aren't ripped with designer holes and the shirt isn't Ed Hardy.

    It's all about presentation.

    Classy? typically no

    But, every so often some of the YVR3 do a thing we call the Fancy Fun Club, where we get dressed up for a music show. I think we are pretty classy when we do this.

    That's AlexOfAnders on the right, and me in the centre taking his order...or telling him when the next train leaves depending on if you think I look like a waiter or a conductor.

    Classy = Classist?

    Classy is all about dressing/acting like you have money, essentially, but in a WASPy way. Clothes described as classy are usually the sorts of things you'd see on the cast of Desperate Housewives (excepting the hot ex-model).

  8. Lisa Christiansen
    08

    @arcticwoman

    I hate to think having manners and dress sense is about trying to appear wealthy ro WASPy.

    Classy is a state of mind

    Classy is carrying yourself with pride but not to the point of being smug

    Classy is always keeping your emotions in check

    Classy is treating ladies like a gentlemen

    Classy is what I am even when I'm not in a suit

    I like the term 'classic' more

    Just as the blog pic might be an example of a 'classic' lady - Audrey Hepburn.

    A 'classic' R3 musician.. Mr Jason Collett.

    class.

    As some have mentioned, I think it's just pride in appearance. Not vanity necessarily, just taking care of oneself and beng presentable.

    @arcticwoman That's definitely one perception, but I also like to hope that I can be a classy lady and look nice without looking WASPy, or like I'm above anyone in money or social class!

    I like Alex's rundown. I can be crass and crude with friends in jest, but I think/hope I maintain some semblance of class even in my hobo chic look (as Grant would say anyways..)

    Spilling beer on Ana's head...not so classy. In fairness though, my balloon was gonna float away, I needed to leap for it...

    classy is about holding doors open for ladies and giving up bus seats to old people. if you don't do those things then your dad should smack you in the head.

    @gunshots

    Ding ding...often is the time on the bus where I wish I was a more imposing figure so as to admonish fellow commuters about not giving up seats for elderly/pregnant women/parents with small children without fear of being smashed

  21. Lisa Christiansen
    21

    @rhiannon

    Someone told me "buy the dress and the event will follow." It seldom does, so I just wear the dress.

  22. fumblebee
    22

    Classy

    is really hard to nail down because it changes depending on the situation. What was classy to wear to work would be out of place out on the town, would be out of place at a dinner party, would be out of place at the beach.

    @Lisa [17/21]

    Good call, this is very important. It's so easy lose any class you may have appeared to have if it's clear that you're trying too hard for it. The key is to make it look effortless.

    And I like this advice. I shouldn't be so worried about standing out. (So long as I make it look effortless. Hmm.)

    When I was in high school some friends and I started "not so casual fridays" where we'd wear a shirt and tie on fridays.  Twas fun, I don't have enough excuses to wear a tie anymore, so sometimes I just do it for the class.

    someone gave me a copy of this poem once, and I've always thot of these guidelines as defining class.  I found a link here, ironically on a somewhat cheezy website.

  31. victornovemberlima
    31

    @arcticwoman

    I disagree that classy is "dressing/acting like you have money, essentially, but in a WASPy way."

    I think classy is a way of self-presentation, deportment and attitude. Nor do I think classy is classist.  You can have rich jerks and classy lower-income people.

    Classy also cannot be WASPy because that would mean that classiness does not exist in non-WASP countries, which is simply not the case.

  32. fumblebee
    32

    So true! re giving up your seat on the bus for the older folks

    Can't tell you how many times I've seen people, who are clearly struggling to stand on the bus, no be offered a seat.  One time, I was sitting near the back doors of a bus and I could not believe a visibly pregnant woman had to walk near the back.  I did give her my seat because, hello! she was pregnant.

    @jay: I'll class up whenever.  I'm usually sweaty anyway.  Haven't you seen the Sadies play? They're in full suits regardless of the weather!

    @alex: I like your rules.  But even if you did follow all of them, and have blue hair, you aren't classy.

    Classy, to me, means you can go to a job interview dressed as you are.

    @melshim, gunshots, boders

    I usually try to give up seats for people, I used to think of just giving them up for women in general but that usually doesn't goes over well unless they have like an awkward package to carry or something. What about the not moving to the back of the bus? That one bugs me to no end. It's like, people are missing this bus or are crushed into the front just because you want to be close to the door or not in the back of the bus?

    This Guy: No Class!

    I have to admit, while I'm not excited for the new Jersy Shore season, I preedict that I will watch every episode at some point.  I was addicted to the first season, but so much of it was schadenfreude.  It's kind of like the show Cops; on the one hand it's an exploitative display of state authority and class privilege; on the other hand, good lord, I can't stop gawking at these people.  There's an academic corollary to this that I call "Poorientalism" (+1000 'Puche Points for anyone who can name the reference).  It's the inverse of Cribs.  We're set up to look down on these people even as we live vicariously through them.  Of course, some of my students authentically look up to Snooki, J-Wowww, and the Situation.  That scares me.

    what's classy?

    To me, classy is all about the root word classic. A classy outfit is something that you could wear today, 20 years ago, and 20 years in the future and it would still be stylish. It's about identifying the basic elements of style and sticking to them and not just being a slave to fads and attention-grabbers

    Stay Classy, R3

    As for my definition of classy, I think Lisa has it pretty much nailed.  It's an attitude, not a certain prosribed mode of dress or specific behaviors.  Sometimes, for instance, it's far more classy just to drink the Pabst Blue Ribbon instead of insisting on a Heineken.  It's less about showing off, and more about being socially aware and conscious of other people's feelings; it's less knowing to use your forks from the outside in, but because you're considerate for others.  And, yes, a popular definition of "classy" conforms to WASPy, upper- and middle-class notions of proper fashion.  I would think, though, that the classiest thing to do is not to judge others based on their appearance, but how they treat other people.  Sometimes that means having the confidence to ignore the condescension of others.  Or, you could show up in boots and ruin their black tie affair.  Your call.

    isn't classy epitomized by how you treat others? if you're wearing a paper bag, sweatpants, velcro shoes (hehe) or whatever and being respectful and kind to other people, you're plenty classy in my books. after working downtown for a little while, I'd say that the classiest person I met in those horrid months in the business district was the homeless man I chatted with every lunch hour, not the suits who walked by chattering and tackling walkerbys with their shoulder bags.

    It was always already ironic.  Like the trucker cap.  But douchier.

    @knotty matt darbarspecial

    I was thinking the same thing.

    Matt, my friend, we like too many things to be so 'off' in our feelings on Radio Radio. I think we need to convert you somehow.

    This calls for a dance party!

    Would that be

    brainwashing or an intervention?

    @garfield

    I'm picturing a Clockwork Orange-type scenario.  But as a dance party.  And with less ultraviolence.

    Black licroice pipes

    (no, the cigars are different)

    This is my mom's dicontinued item but it irks me because it was a regular item in her stocking and dad and I.. I mean Santa.. had a couple frustrating years until we found out.

    @dawn

    I'm having a realllllllly hard time coming around on Radio Radio!

    I think I'd like them live... but on record... just.. .no

    Well that explains why I can't plead my case on Radio Radio to you on Lana's show!

    Actually, that I can get behind. I don't own the album so haven't listened right through. But did listen to maybe 4 songs in a row. I can see it beng a tough 'album' to love. But I think you might be right on teh live show. I think there's a SxSW video or session out there somewhere.

    Yeah. I have to go meet said parents for dinner in 5 anyway so now no one but you knows of the black licorice pipe woes of Dawn.

    dawn

    the more I think/listen to them.... the more I'm sure it was a sort of conspiracy to get them even on the Short List.  Here's my reasons why

    a) they're annoying (this probably is biased to the max)

    b) they're french (every single french juror had them on their ballot.  hmmm? I think THEY are biased)

    c) when you type their name into google, you get results to buy their album on itunes/future shop/best buy..... that's a bit odd?

    So yeah, I think they got on because of group voting and marketing pressure.  As long as they (or Karkwa for said french conspiracy theory reasons) don't win this year, all is good in my world.

    sidenote

    they don't make those black licorice pipe cigars anymore? what????

    do they still make popeye?

    re: Today on Appetite for Distraction: Stay Classy R3 Listeners

    Interesting theories, conspiracy nut. Haha. No there are some valid points in there. It is a bit suspicious (although they have some very unique marketing ideas - albums coming with merch.. crazy quill pen merch).

    I just think they are fun.

    And the cigars are still around (and Popeye  cigarettes are too last time I looked). It's the pipes they got rid of. It's the same thing except the pipe is thicker and has a bend in it. My mother insists that makes a difference.

    And now I HAVE to go. Later buddy.
