The R3-30 featuring Boxer The Horse & Stars!

CHART #202

Hello there. It's great to be back at The R3-30. How about a round of applause for Mr. Pedro Mendes for his outstanding hosting job last week! And let us no forget producer extraordinaire, Ms. Lily Mills!

OK. Enough niceties. There's a show to be doin'.

And what a show it is! The songs will be counted down, of course. Can't have a countdown show without that! But we'll also subject Boxer The Horse to one of your R3-30 Questions, Torquil Campbell from Stars has a wonderful (albeit brief) message for us, and a Broad Way Sleep track is our FunClub Pick Of The Week! We are also very, very excited because not one, but two Royals are making their R3-30 debut this week!

And maybe, just maybe we'll get to the bottom of the troubles over on The R3-30 FunClub. But I doubt it.

Saturdays, 7am-10am & 2pm-5pm Pacific

    re: The R3-30 featuring Boxer The Horse & Stars!

    good morning, Craig. I have the day off so it's an extra long weekend. And, because I need to pack the van, there's a morning thunderstorm rolling through town right now.

    Good morning

    I'm one of the few people staying behind today so that others can have some vacation time. That means that I am at work, yes, but also virtually alone in my office. Muah hah hah!

  3. Wapuche
    03

    The Canoe

    So, is there a particular significance to the canoe, or is it just there to taunt me with memories of that horrible Summer I spent at Camp Crystal Lake?

  4. Wapuche
    04

    Addendum

    Good morning to you, arcticwoman.  Being alone at work is almost as good as not being at work at all.  Almost.

  5. Pedro Mendes

    It's a Royal wooden canoe

    debuting bands hint. cool, no?

  6. Wapuche
    06

    @pedro

    I see.  That's... that's great.  I can't believe I didn't notice that right away.

    Happy Friday!

    I absolutely LOVE this Royal Canoe song. Especially this last part with the gang vocals... so epic!

    @arctic woman

    I share your pain.  I'd like to be not in the office at all today... but am here for the morning before I zip to the lake.

    Craig and his rippin' tunes help keep me from being so lonely at work.

    re empty offices

    Same here. It's slightly depressing. I wouldn't mind if it were Tuesday, but I just want the weekend now so these intervening hours seem like torture.

    @rhiannon

    Good morning!

    Isn't it weird that the only way we really talk now is via the blog and not text messages? it seems backwards in technology somehow.

    how was the Polymaths last night?

  11. arcticwoman

    Ouch, dude. Ouch.

    I'd like to ride a Royal Wooden Canoe down the Besnard Lakes under the Stars some day.

    Cedar strip canoe?

    Is that for reals? It's called a 'royal' canoe? I wanna hear a heartwarming story of how it was built by Craig's pops when Spanky was a young Spanky and they had just moved to their new house and it's one of Spanky's most vivid memories from his very young childhood, standing in the workshop watching his father work.

    Then I could relate, you know?

    In case my dad is reading, 'Hi Dad, Love you, miss you, talk to you soon'

  16. MoniSki
    16

    @mattyjames

    how long did it take you to generate that lovely sentence? haha. brilliant.

  17. Wapuche
    17

    @moniski; @arcticwoman; @mattyjames

    Moniski- It does indeed.  Nice one.

    arcticwoman- Not intended to inflict pain.  I always work alone, or from home, but I also work all hours.  Including the weekend.  So, I feel your pain.

    Mattyjames- Sounds like a lovely way to see The Mountains and the Trees, and the ocassional Caribou.

    Hey everybody.

    I'm now officially having my mid-dissertation break. Three days off starting now- Three family birthdays....(fathers, cousin, mine) in three days. And how did my day start? A parcel from Vish! The Acorn mug I won by accident finally arrived. So it would feel wrong if i didn't pop in and say hi.

  23. mattyjames2001
    23

    @moniski

    It took me a whole 10 seconds to think up.  And most of that was spent typing it out....

    I already like your guys' additions to the run-on sentence better! haha.

  24. mattyjames2001
    24

    @cam

    How are you half-baked at 730 in the morning?!

    Did someone wake and bake before work? hmmmm? No comment means yes.

  25. hgummo
    25

    @boders

    Don't you think it's a little early to be smoking the BC bud? Do we need to organize an intervention?

  26. boders
    26

    Hey Ro!

    Hope you some great family revelry! At the TM&TT and TWoM show last week I was talking with Scott and Sean and you came up, mostly just how awesome you were etc..they said to say hi if I see you on the tubes, so 'Hey'

  27. boders
    27

    baked?

    c'mon guys..one doesn't have to be stoned to make a 'half-baked' comment....there likelihood goes up exponentially of course if one is! Where's Benoit to back me up on this?

  28. zoot aloors
    28

    @boders

    I'll let you in on the shaggy reference

    Craig just interviewed Boxer the horse, posed the Q: What costume would you wear onstage?

    Someone answered "Darth Vader, mask and all".

    To which Craig replied" Sing through the mask? you'll sound like Shaggy...not the cartoon character"!

    MAXI PRIEST NEVA FORRGET!!1!!

  29. Wapuche
    29

    @garfielduk

    That is the danger in heading out to the Islands, even the Bahamas.  If you're not careful, then Holy Fuck, the current will get you and, unless there are Boats around to rescue you, you may end up taking that Human Highway straight to The Burning Hell.

  30. PainTreeLot145

  33. rhiannonevelyn
    33

    @matty

    Agreed! And it's been so long since brunch, too. New phone soon, I swear. The show was perfect - no tears, just fun and dancing and singing along. And I saw the lovely Ms. DarBar.

    Nice band sentence & nice additions to everyone that joined in. I hope you guys are this entertaining all day. Ughghhh work.

    @garfielduk

    I don't know about you, but I'm suffering from the hot hot heat here in the uk. If only i could find some Shad(e) or perhaps turn on the A.C, it's New. Man this town gets overrun by Feral Children in the summer time when the suuns out. If they aren't carefull they'll feel the back of my gianthand. Much as I enjoy the r3-30 i might have to tune in to the weather station to find out how long this weather is going to continue....day, months, years?

  39. boders
    39

    @Zoot

    I'm a decent hand at trivia...the key to winning swag though is getting the phone dialing down right...Matty has zero ability to do this properly..ask him what he does on Trivia Tuesdays and do the opposite!

  41. rhiannonevelyn
    41

    this weekend

    I'm seeing Hot Blood Bombers at O'Hanlon's tonight, and then I have absolutely no plans for the rest of the weekend. Simultaneously relaxing and boring. I'm sure something will come up, though. Maybe some of aforementioned wobbly pops.

  42. boders
    42

    @Smashley

    That's awesome! I am 8 hours away from heading up to Whistler! My apologies once again for not spreading the word on the blog about the Dan show in English Bay. I was gonna mention that Yukon Blonde play at 6:00 on Saturday, but you'll be getting your Shambhala-on!

    @anyone in Vancouver over the weekend - Yukon Blonde at 6:00pm, English Bay beach, lots of other music earlier in the day at Sunset..free

    @Rhiannon

    I can't wait either.... actually last weekend I thought the folk fest was this weekend!!  I was both happy to have another weekend this summer (long weekend too), and disappointed in having to wait another week.

    @Matty & Rhiannon

    Do we want to attempt breakfast this weekend gang??  My wife and I are good to go if anyone else is.

  51. boders
    51

    @PainTreeLot

    We should party! Was originally going camping this weekend, but that has morphed into staying at a friends 'cabin' in Whistler, which shall be awesome nonetheless.

    Music wise, should enough coherence be maintained, our group will be doing a group listening party to the shortlist, and then we'll score according to the excellent rubric Matt developed.

    Regardless of coherence, everyone MUST colour the lovely Lana Gay (that means you too! There's prizes!) and we shall do that as well. And the whole weekend will be soundtracked by R3 fans ipods..should be wonderful!! (also, the Roadtrip edition of Grant's podcast is out now too! That'll cover the travelers for an hour or so..)

  52. hgummo
    52

    @Cam/my weekend

    Sounds like a great weekend! Hope you guys have tons of fun!!

    I am taking it pretty easy this weekend because last weekend was so nuts... really looking forward to it actually! Sometimes you just need one of those quiet weekends to regain your sanity. My apartment REALLY needs cleaning and it will be nice to do some stuff around here. Not much going on music-wise here this weekend I don't think.

    i am gonna apply for the associate producer job. i know i'm not going to get it, since i am still in radio school, but considering production at R3 is pretty much exactly what i want to do when i graduate, it can't hurt to show interest.

  90. boders

    MoniSki?  Um remember all those years you spent doing radio production in college?  And the summer you were the re-recording mixer for Avatar?  And your time as president of Clear Channel (Followed by the scandal after your failed attempt to merge STW and Royal Wood into "Said the Wood").  Hi-o.  And all the episodes of WKRP in Cincinnatti you watched?  I can't imagine a more qualified candidate.

  94. rhiannonevelyn
    94

    I wish

    all who decide to apply the best of luck. It would be so great to see someone we've all chatted with on the blog / become great friends with off the blog get the job! It would be such a cool opportunity.

  95. hgummo
    95

    I second Rhiannonevelyns sentiments

    Anyone from the blog who applies should at least have the advantage of being able to demonstrate their passion towards R3 and Canadian music! It would be awesome to see a blogger get it!

  96. MusicSoop
    96

    @MoniSki

    Oh yeah.  So I shouldn't mention anything about "Holy Wood" or "Wood 65" or "Shout Out Out Out Wood" or "Royal Woodhands" either?

  97. rhiannonevelyn
    97

    @regina

    Yes, let's use the facebook group avenue of discussion after the weekend and figure out what we can get up to before the fest. Speaking of which, I have to work more on that flag...

    @matty Sorry? I didn't think to mention it. I mistakenly assumed you'd know. So will I see you at the Exchange on Tuesday night? I'd better.

    more on the ass. prod. job (and shameless self promotion)

    the last thing i did for Evolution (the BCIT radio station which is run by the students) was a production shift; more specifically, Imaging, which are those splitters/bumpers/station IDs you hear all the time. (like, PEW ZAP POW, you're listening to [station])

    if anyone feels like listening to the stuff i made, you can do so by clicking right here. (not to brag, but i got a 95 on the whole shebang, and a couple of them i am quite proud of. and even if you don't feel like listening to them all, listen to "one great city" for a chuckle).

    though, like i said, i probably need to finish my schooling first. why oh why couldn't this posting have ome up at this time NEXT year???

    perfect festival workshop theme.

    Woodies.

    Lineup:

    Royal Wood

    Woodhands

    Deep Dark Woods

    Wooden Sky

    The Wooden Stars

    After typing the word "wood" multiple times, I've notice how strange the word "wood" is.

    @musicsoop; @hgummo

    @musicsoop- Don't forget her other projects, like "Black Mountains and the Trees" and "Land of Sam Roberts."  (Also, notice how I didn't go with any combination of Wood, Rocket, or El Torpedo there.  Just saying, I could have but didn't)

    Dear hgummo, Please don't make me spit Arnold Palmer all over my netbook.  It's not even paid off yet.  Your friend, Wapuche

    117

    @regina crew

    I  stayed at O'hanlons far too late last night, but it was a good time. I am up for something on Monday and even I knew about Said the Whale on Tues. lol. It's on my FB events. Looking forward to RFF.

    I may check out Northcote at Fainting Goat tomorrow night. I enjoyed him when he played before Library Voices back in Feb or so. He was also hanging out at O'hanlons last night.

  118. MoniSki
    118

    yes Ro Cemm!

    Woodpigeon for sure!!

    Craig, I hope you're reading this.... I'm probably going to have to go ahead and suggest this on one of your monday music melds!

    Rah Rah Presents a Tribute to Plants & Animals: Rah Rah Land

    (Cause they have an album called La La Land! Get it?! maybe not)

    Speaking of "presents" albums... how come we never hear any of Kevin Drew's stuff from 2008? Highly underrated.  And "Safety Bricks" keeps popping up on my ipod lately.

  122. MusicSoop

    Also one drink every time he says "genetically modified".  Two drinks every time he says "crop".

    Two drinks for me at lunch it is!

    @darbar

    Oh man, I didn't know Northcote was playing tomorrow night. I might go see him. In addition to being talented, my impression is that he's a super nice dude. He's opening for the Wooden Sky and Yukon Blonde in October, another show we'll have to hang out at! Perhaps a good show for the Regina Chapter Gets Classy evening?

  127. garfielduk
    127

    @MusicSoop

    how many drinks when someone suggests a drinking game?

  128. mattyjames2001
    128

    @cam

    a) there's zero advertisting for anything

    b) Rhiannon is cell-phone-less these days

    c) where the heck is Jenelle?!

    d) I spend way too much time at the golf course to go to shows.  Can't be outside all year long, ya know?

  129. rhiannonevelyn
    129

    @hgummo, mattyjames, boders

    Once I used a big word in a text to Matt and he said "Okay Cam" which I then learned meant I used a big word he didn't understand. I think "pulling a boders" means a lot of different things these days.

    I think the word was "omniscient." Probably unfair for a text message conversation anyway. Soryy Matt.

    Wooden Sky & Yukon Blonde in Regina in Oct... very excited.

    BSS in Saskatoon in the fall... dissappointed.

  131. hgummo
    131

    @Matt (121)

    Haha. Love it.

    Since it's Friday we can up the ante - one drink for every time Cam's posts includes words that no one understands.

    Did you just casually drop that YUKON FREAKIN BLONDE is coming?!?!

    (Japandroids are right around then too.... October will be kick-ass)

    awesome, well why stop at just the word wood, we may as well include:

    - Forest City Lovers

    - Oh No Forest Fires

  139. mattyjames2001
    139

    @musicsoop

    Don't think so.  TM&TT are doing two shows 2+ hours away in SK from us... so he probably should've just came here? I dunno.  If he's going to Winnipeg you have to pass through Regina pretty much anyway.

    Said The Whale aren't really on my "bands that I'd drive to go see" list, plus they're here on Tuesday I guess.

    Drinking Game

    I believe we already established that it was 3 drinks for any mention of genetically modified anything.

    It should be one drink for suggesting a new drinking game item.  Which could snowball very quickly.  Excellent.

  143. Gibsonguitarist77
    143

    Personally, Saskatoon = motel room & gas money, and I don't like doing these things by myself

    i am pretty sure "pulling a boders" has a half dozen meanings at this point.

    145

    @matty

    Yukon Blonde - YES! Can't wait.

    Keep in mind I work in the office where all these things are booked, so I hear pretty early. You're right, advertising isn't great. Are you in the Exchange's fb group? Messages go out fairly regularly from there.

    @musicsoop yeah, I'm super sad to be missing TM&TT but I just can't make the trip this time. As far as STW, they'll be here Tuesday so it makes more sense to just go then.

    @Wapuche

    a post mentions bacon, 1 drink

  147. Craig Norris

    What about mentioning...

    ..a genetically modified bacon drink?

  148. MusicSoop
    148

    @AlexOfAnders [146]

    Ah that might be dangerous.  We're talking alcohol poisoning at that point I think?

  149. mattyjames2001
    149

    @jay/rhiannon

    I have so many mailing lists (not the exchange's fault) that I refuse to sign up for anymore.  Plus, I start to get mad at the place for sending them out.

    I quit the Ohanlons list because I hated having 14 new event invitations every day.

    Or more seriously, I think it involves sitting in a control room sort of like this

    If you're to the point where you're imbibing a GMO-bacon drink, it's probably a sign that you're calling in sick for the rest of the afternoon.  What you do after that is your own business.

  158. AlexOfAnders
    158

    @MusicSoop

    I have bacon infused bourbon sitting at home as we speak. How about instead of a drink for every bacon mention we do it this way: as soon as a post degenerates to talk of bacon, slam your drink

    re: saskatchewan pronunciation

    The video from Podahkins [156] is definitely a new one to me haha.

    But I've had this conversation a few times. Even born-n-raised Saskatchewan folk sometimes emphasize the "wan" - see Marshall Burns in this song. For the purpose of the song but still. I know people who live here (me, on occasion) barely pronounce the word anymore - Sskatchewn - so I'll take a well-enunciated version with an over-pronounced "wan."
