I COULDN'T SLEEP AT ALL LAST NIGHT!

Posted by Chris Alscher on Jul 28, 2010

I don't want to say too much, because I don't want to jinx the outcome. But a good sized chunk of us "musical artiste" types in Vancouver are in fear of losing yet another spot for art and music because of the quite archaiac zoning laws here.

And this one would hurt a lot. The place is (not was) terrific. The people that run it are so amazing and so open with what people are hoping to do with the space. I took part in Christmas Pageants, Piano Recitals, an art opening inspired by the genius of Ol Dirty Bastard, CD releases, out of town bands needing help with a show... It all happened at this spot, whose portraits of cats in body casts and an afroed Phil Spector illuminated the quaint but atmospheric space.

If it goes, the only good that will come of it is that maybe some higher ups might realize that things have to change. Hopefully.

WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT?

    @Chris

    I still can't believe they're under threat of closure and it sounds like it's due to ONE person/household. It seems ridiculous that one person can continually make complaints and it's taken at face value without looking into it deeper. The venue in question has tried to be as respectful to the surround neighbourhood as possible but they don't get any compromise or respect in return.

    If we lose this place, I think I at least need to start taking a more active role in changing our ridiculous bylaws

    And what place are we talking about? Have I overlooked the name?

    @Bearmaster

    I think Chris says he doesn't want to jinx it but I believe he's talking about Little Mountain Gallery. They're trying to gather letters from patrons and artists about the value of their establishment and the role it is filling in the community. From what I hear, there's basically one guy who constantly complains about the noise even though they've been trying hard to be respectful of the neighbours. I mean, most shows end by 10 - 10:30 and I've never even been able to hear the bands or anything much outside the venue so it must be people talking outside the gallery that bother this person even though they consistently shoo us toward Main st if we want to talk and have signs everywhere asking people to be quiet when they go outside.

    It'll be sad if one crankster can rob the city of another valuable multi-disiplinary venue for the arts.

    I may be wrong though, Chris may be talking of a different venue

     We are lucky in Winnipeg, we  have not had a venue failure for any reason in a very, very long time.

    In fact, the last one to open, The Lo Pub, is doing really well.   I have not heard that it is taking business from others, we seem to be able to absorb as many venues as the city has to offer.

    Ultimately though, it is the patrons and musicians that suffer, and I truly hope that this does not come to pass for you guys.

    Know what keeps me up at night here?  Malathion spraying for mosquitos.  And not just because those trucks are so damn noisy.
