Today on Appetite for Distraction: 75 Years of Penguins

Posted by Lisa Christiansen on Jun 01, 2010

Amongst all the many anniversaries to celebrate this year (Canadian Navy - 100; Elvis Presley – 75; The Simpsons – 20) there is also the 75th anniversary of Penguin Books.

I have been a huge fan of the insides and outsides of these pocket books for many years. The UK company was created to make literature affordable for all. To keep costs low the size and presentation were kept small and easily identifiable. Funny to think that their low-keyness became the secret to their enduring popularity.

I buy Penguin books to store on my shelves, read them and even have a box set of 100 postcards featuring the iconic covers.

During this year of celebration many artists have got involved in their own cover designs, including our own icon Douglas Coupland. And Radio 3’s graphic designer Ben Didier, who kindly made me the image at the top of this post.

A happy day for me indeed! Now I just have to write the book.

Penguin Books are great!  I love to have books around when I travel, and they're so easily portable.  In a way, it's an extension of the penny press of the 19th century, in which mass publication technology and low prices (along with the lack of international copyright law) made reading accessible to the working class, who began reading voraciously (and, like Penguin readers, they could read just about anywhere).  So, really, Penguin can be seen as carrying on the tradition of making it easier for everyone to enjoy books.

Puffin Books turn 70 this year, they are children's imprint of Penguin Books.  Is it me or is it quiet in here today?
