You Say Party! We Say Die! Drummer Devon Clifford Passes Away

Posted by Amanda Ash on Apr 18, 2010

Devon Clifford, the drummer for Abbottsford-based dance-punk group You Say Party! We Say Die!, passed away early Sunday morning after collapsing during a gig at Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre Friday night.

"It is with absolute sadness to report that our dear friend Devon Clifford passed away just hours ago in a Vancouver hospital surrounded by his family and friends," the band's publicist said in a press release. "He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. I request that we respect the family's privacy during this incredibly difficult time."

The cause of death remains unconfirmed, although a source close to the band says he was rushed to hospital after lead singer Becky Ninkovic asked audience members at the Downtown Eastside venue to call 911 shortly after midnight. The source said Clifford was resuscitated on the way to the hospital, where doctors discovered he had bleeding of the brain. He was then put into a coma and put on life support.

It was reported that Clifford, 30, underwent surgery early Saturday morning. He was taken off life support early Sunday morning.

"DEVON CLIFFORD 1979 - 2010 R.I.P" read the message the band sent out via Twitter early Sunday morning. Previous tweets included "We are devastated and trying to keep hope. He needs at miracle. Thank you" and "there aren't alot of words right now. let the doctors do their job."

According to the Globe and Mail, Clifford worked for the Portland Hotel Society, a housing organization that helps the impoverished residents of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside.

The band had just returned from a North American tour in support of their latest release, XXXX, and were set to embark on an extensive European tour beginning April 26. It is unknown whether the band will complete the tour upcoming dates.

UPDATE:

Radio 3 has received an official statement from the family. It reads as follows:

Devon Clifford | Family Statement

YSPWSD's Devon Clifford experienced a massive brain hemorrhage resulting from congenital defects while on stage in Vancouver on Friday night and fell into a coma. A surgery was performed but sadly doctors were unable to save his life. He was 30.

Devon Clifford was an extremely gifted drummer and determined character. He loved his family, loved his band, loved traveling, loved being on stage and loved meeting people around the world. He was smart, witty, passionate, and music meant everything to him. He was also incredibly generous with his love and respected everybody he came into contact with. This was underlined by his work with the under privileged at the Portland Hotel Society.

The Clifford family would like to take this opportunity to remind young people to have the courage to follow their dreams like Devon did.

The family would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody around the world for their kind words and stories about how Devon impacted their lives.

It's a complete shock and sadness. He was a nice and funny guy. I still can never stop listen to the Sessions podcast from Halifax Pop Explosion when I am on the bus and then hear his voice in between one of the songs.

It was a privilege to see the band when I went to Montreal during the Easter weekend.

    Devon will be missed. R.I.P.

Devon was a hilarious, uplifting presence, full of banter and smiles at YSPWSD shows. His drumming was the back bone of the band and I suspect he was like that for his close ones as well. It was a pleasure having met him and I'm totally shocked and saddened by his death. My prayers and thoughts go to Devon's family, friends and bandmates...

It is a huge tragedy, it's difficult to wrap your head around it. If anything positive can come out of it though it's the reminder that none of us knows how long we have so be careful what you put off for "someday".

The Clifford family would like to take this opportunity to remind young people to have the courage to follow their dreams like Devon did.

    Rest in peace Mr. Clifford

In situations like this its hard to know what to say.

I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to see them last fall during Halifax Pop Explosion. Devon really stood out since he was more than just somebody at the back of the band providing rhythm. Instead he was somebody who clearly loved what he was doing, joking and chatting between songs and just adding to a great concert experience.

Thanks for being a great example.

Breaks my heart to read this. I did not know Devon, but having close friends pass away in recent years, makes me truly feel empathetic for all who did. My deepest condolences. RIP.

We met these guys only a couple of weeks ago here in DET.  Devon and the band were so nice to us and chattered for quite some time and were so gracious when asked for photos.  He was not only a great performer, but funny as hell and a super great guy.  I'll cherish the photos from that night, this one in particular.  We'll miss you pal.

Really sad to hear this.  Although I'm not the biggest fan of the band, I really enjoyed their Artist Series podcast and I really enjoyed hearing their song on the R3-30 during the winter (had me up dancing more than a few times!).  I wish all the best to the family and band, may Devon's memory never be forgotten, and let's make sure his music never leaves this site!

I caught one of their NB shows in October. Devon was very charming during the show, bantering with the lead singer and the crowd. Very talented and came off as a very nice, gracious guy. Definitely sorry to hear about his passing.

Very sad. I organized and promoted my first concert last week-- You Say Party! We Say Die! in Prince George. I only got to speak with Devon briefly, but my impression of him seems largely to be true, based on the other comments-- he was very genial, quick with a smile and a kind word to everyone working behind-the-scenes. My thoughts go out to the family and the band.
