Wrath of Khanna: The Breakfast Club with Sloan

Posted by Vish Khanna on Apr 15, 2010

I'm quite thrilled to say that Jay Ferguson and Chris Murphy of the great rock 'n' roll band Sloan will be joining me on the Breakfast Club this morning, and we're heading back to an old BC favourite, Aunties & Uncles in Toronto.

Like some of you out there, Sloan were a really important band to me growing up. Beyond the fact that they're all musical aces who write really thoughtful, infectious songs, Sloan always seemed keen to expose a whole community of artists --people like Thrush Hermit, the Super Friendz, Al Tuck, Jale, Eric's Trip, Buck 65, Local Rabbits, and more murderecords alumni--to their ever-growing audience. Many Canadian music fans appreciated their selfless efforts, not to mention their great taste. I guess I learned a lot from Sloan, as cheesy as that sounds. Any way, this Saturday April 17th is International Record Store Day and, for their part, Sloan are playing a free in-store at Sonic Boom in Toronto. They're headlining a radical bill, which also features Valery Gore, Buck 65, METZ (best new band in Toronto!), the Meligrove Band, and Adam Green. I'll be chatting with Jay and Chris about this, their new b-sides album, and much more.

Were you impacted by the music of Sloan and the spotlight they shone on Halifax music and their murderecords cronies? Are you planning on celebrating International Record Store Day in any special way? What are YOU having for breakfast today?

    Merry Breakfast Everyone!

    Yes of course Sloan impacted me! Especially being from the East Coast I think it was and still is special to see them doing well. Thus I look forward to today's show.

    I sadly don't have any plans for International Record Store Day as of yet. Since I don't have a record player it doesn't make much sense to buy records. I know I got to get one!!

    Okay for breakfast today I got a homemade bagel, yogurt with homemade granola! (Thanks to Dawn.h for the link to the recipe on this), and coffee. I think I should get bonus points this week for having two homemade items.

    ack

    I forgot it was Breakfast Club day and I forgot a purple bagel.  Perhaps this will only affect my day, but if anyone else out there is troubled by these developments, I'm sorry!

    I will be heading to Back Alley Music in Charlottetown for Record Store Day.  They are also putting on a Soupy Saturday, and have a number of performers lined up.  It should be good times!

    @Martin

    You should always keep an emergency purple bagel somewhere!!

    I know... it's even in the emergency preparedness guide here on PEI...

    morning all

    I had porridge. but it's lunchtime now. So it's mango salad. Yum

    By the way...a friend of mine in the uk just made this tshirt:http://ow.ly/1yKUd

    I think some of you might enjoy it

    Breakfast.

    Granola. Not purple. I'm rather confused about the breakfast coloration business. Hell, half the results for a Google search for "purple bagel" are comment threads here. Is this like that waiver I never got?

    Also, I'm really liking this new Tokyo Police Club single. I kind of wish Flash would start working again so that I could actually listen on-demand on the website.

    If you are looking to get Breakfast Club bonus points that better be homemade?

  12. MikeV

    @Paul Fisher

    Martin (suckamc) loves to eat these blueberry bagels that for some reason are purple.

    Oh, and record store day

    I'll be riding a bus on Record Store day, but I will be going past Arkells' secret upstate New York hideout (reposted for those who have not yet seen it). So that's something.

    15

    @daa1982

    I would give out point is if I could, but only Vish can do that, and he never gives out bonus points!! He is such a hoarder!!

  16. daa1982
    16

    Mike V

    That's probably for the best... I would just spend the points on penny candy at the convenience store anyway.

    re: Wrath of Khanna: The Breakfast Club with Sloan

    I am messing up my usual morning schedule to hear Chris associates the Heimlich Maneuver with Jale? Ha. This BC is everything I hoped for. MikeV: Yay! Is it everything you hoped for? You made your own bagels?! Monica: Does that mean you think you're coming on Saturday. I've decided to - at least - go at 3pm. I want to see Sloan. OK. I'll be back after I shower.
  18. MikeV
    18

    @dawn.h

    Yes the gronola is delicious!! I didn't actually make the bagels myself no, but I am still demanding bonus points for them.

    If Vish doesn't give you bonus points for that, then we'll give you some street cred in TB3 and I's scooter gang.

    Impacted by Sloan

    If you are:

    • older than 25

    • listened to music in the 90's

    • listen to music now

    like LOVE Radio3

    • are here now listening

    You were (and are) forever impacted for the better by Sloan. Or a bold faced liar.

    What we have here today is in large part because of the footwork they did way back when. Other countries (namely the US) took Canadian music seriously when they signed to DGC. And more importantly we started to believe in ourselves that we counted internationally!

    Because of Sloan a legion of teens made bands. We're listening to them now.

    Hell… would Radio 3 even exist if Sloan didn't?

    Bonus points for everyone!

  23. MikeV
    23

    @daa1982

    Is that street cred convertable with my Club Z points, because I still haven't given up on them?

  24. MikeV
    24

    @tb3

    I concur with daa1982. You pretty much say it. Although I would add that they made Canadians take the East Coast seriously as well.

  25. daa1982
    25

    @ Mike V

    Not sure about Club Z, do you have a Shoppers Optimum card?

  26. MikeV
    26

    @daa1982

    I got a Woolco charge card with a picture of Alan Thicke on it, and some Soviet Era tokens for the Moscow Metro.

    Sloan influenced me morethan by music.. I tell stories too..

    The last time I saw Mr Murphy in person it was not a concert but in a movie theatre.. about 5 steps away from this record store they are playing in. I went with my friend and her friend to an Edgar Wright film festival at The Bloor Theatre. That makes it sound like I went begrudgingly, not so. We sat next to an aisle but I sat furthest in from the aisle so was twisted to face them. When I turned in my seat to let them chat and peruse the room in general, my jaw dropped. Not the row in front but the row in front of that was Mr Murphy in all his glory. It's a good thing I already knew the movies well because I kept sneaking peaks. He laughed when he should, not to worry. Ha. Also, that night, I ran into my work seatmate (we share desks) in the beer line and he lives clear across town. That was a great night. Edgar Wright was there, was engaging and made us all pose in a 'rawr' moment for a photo on his blog.

    @tb3

    Well said tb3.

  29. dawn.h
    29

    @MiveK

    I agree about the east coast. I all but ignored it before Sloan. Although I ignored most everything because pre-Sloan I was a silly preteen. But I had no family out there or anything to tie me to it.
  30. Ro Cemm
    30

    @tb3

    I've never actually heard sloan- being a UK dweller.
  31. dawn.h
    31

    @Ro Cemm

    Oh no! Go to their R3 profile when the show is over. Craig won't mind.
  32. MikeV
    32

    @dawh.n

    Yeah I would say Sloan and Eric's Trip were in part responsible for getting us on the map, which was no small feat at the time. Thus fostering what is today af very strong and amazingly diverse music scene.

    I can only imagine how awesome for Zeus it would have been to play Sloan songs with Mr Ferguson.. or hear theirs is his favourite album this year. Hee.

    I'm eternally sorry for messing up your name.

    Sloan were/are and always have been...

    AWESOME . (period)

  36. dawn.h
    36

    I just thought of something else "east coast"

    This probably affected me as much as Sloan, in putting the east coast in my life. Road to Avonlea but to a larger effect Anne of Green Gables. I know they are a bit cheesier than Sloan and the music scene but they might be just as instrumental in getting the country interested in the east coast. (Incidentally, I find the show Heartland does that for me and Alberta)
  37. Ro Cemm
    37

    @dawn.h and anyone else

    Ok so educate me......

    and which tracks?

  38. MikeV
    38

    @h.dawn

    No big deal.

    I would like to now send shout outs to the following

    bt3, MoneSky, Fisher Paul, Cemm Ro, smuckamc, doo1982, and Vince Khanna aka Tariq

  39. Vish Khanna
    39

    @dawn.h

    Only "a bit cheesier than Sloan?"

    That's funny.

  40. Michael Wynn
    40

    Ro Cemm Which tracks?

    Start with Underwhelmed, that was their first.

    And btw being a UK dweller is no excuse, just saying lol.

  41. Vish Khanna
    41

    @Ro Cemm

    Yeah, I'd just go through tracks on their R3 page in chronological order.

    There's a really interesting progression in Sloan's work that's mos def worth tracing...

  42. MikeV
    42

    @Ro Cemm

    I would agree with Mr. Farming, start at the beginning.

    Personally though I have always been a fan of One Chord To Another.

  43. daa1982
    43

    Mike V

    I like "doo1982".  Thats going to be my Ham Radio handle.

  44. dawn.h
    44

    @Ro Cemm

    (I can't get lines added to my posts this morning so this will be cluttered) From their profile, which is more or less in descending chronological order: I Can Feel It has vocals with someone from this band Jale that was mentioned (was an 'our song' for me in high school with a bf heh). Underwhelmed is probably associated with old school Sloan most. Penpals is fun and based on letters they received all over the world. Some of my favourites aren't on there. I like the newer one they did with Will Currie called Pushpins.
  45. dawn.h
    45

    @Ro Cemm

    But I'm with everyone. Start at the bottom of their profile (or better their full albums) and work your way up.
  46. dawn.h
    46

    @Vish

    Well, I didn't mean to imply Sloan is cheesy. Their music isn't. Wait. Sometimes it can be. But they are. Well wait. Not always. Uh. Shut up Vish. Haha.
  47. dawn.h
    47

    @Vish

    Oh. Who is that guy in the photo at breakfast, serving coffee? He looks VERY familiar.
  48. Michael Wynn
    48

    Sloan started, to put it in perspective

    Just after Nirvana had broken out in North America.  Early 90's.

    My band played with them their first show in Toronto at the Rivoli ( I think it was their first gig, can't confirm), that was an unbelievable experience.  There was a real anticipation to the crowd at that gig.  It was something to behold, and they definitely didn't disappoint.

    Name isn't familiar. Oh well. Maybe last time you did a BC there I saw a pic. Or he's one of those people you 'see' but don't 'know'.
  52. Vish Khanna
    52

    @dawn.h

    Right, I think I know what you mean. They're called "strangers?" Or "ghosts?"

    I don't think I know what you mean...

  53. dawn.h
    53

    @Vish

    (you are your show is making me late for work.. heh) I mean like people you see around town a lot. You don't know them. But maybe they eat at places you eat. Or go to shows you go to. Or are in your floor hockey league. Haha. OK. To work. Really. Shutting down. Bye.

    Six years ago, Sloan saved me from a lifetime of listening to Big Rock Radio and then introduced me to Thrush Hermit and Local Rabbits and the Inbreds and all that is good in the world.

    MY FAVOURITE BAND!

    Sloan's music has impacted me in a big way (but not during the 90's). I got into Sloan when I was 16 in '06.  I picked up the greatest hits and then Never Hear the End of It soon after. I've since made my way through their catalogue and made my way to 10+ Sloan shows.  I love them so much and I'm so glad they're still putting out new music and touring!
