Boy oh boy, am I excited about this week's Breakfast Club with Montreal's Rae Spoon and Halifax's Ghost Bees. Not only are both really wonderful artists, they recently played a pancake breakfast show at Kazoo! Fest in Guelph. An actual breakfast concert ladies and gentlemen! What more could I ask for?

Today's show documents last weekend's rainy Sunday morning, where a house on Edinburgh Street played host to 50-odd people huddling together in a living room, munching on hot cakes, and watching intiimate sets by Rae and Ghost (I prefer to address them by their Wu-Tang Clan nicknames; as it turns out, they don't prefer this). Along the way, I chatted with Kazoo! mastermind/breakfast host Brad McInerney, his former bandmate and Elbow Beach Surf Club singer Lindsay Roe, pancake chef and D'Urbervilles/Diamond Rings dude John O'ReganLe Cyc librettist/Kazoo! helper/breakfast host Eihab Boraie, Green Go gringo/BC alumnist Ferenc Stenton, Wavelength Toronto co-founder/Music Gallery Artistic Director/Republic of Safety guitar-slinger/BC alumnist Jonny Dovercourt, and of course, Rae Spoon and Romy and Sari Lightman of Ghost Bees. It's a full show so pour syrup on your neighbour and get ready!

What's the largest musical gathering you've ever attending at someone's house? How many pancakes did you eat at it? Zero?! That's terrible! Aren't Rae Spoon and Ghost Bees swell? What are YOU having for breakfast today?

    Good Morning!

    I don't think I have ever been to a musical gathering at someone's house per say,I mean I have been to people's houses and sometimes they even let me inside. If I were to go I would eat 53 pancakes. No more, no less.

    Okay breakfast will include yogurt and maybe granola if I got any, I am out of the good homemade stuff so I got to see what I have in the factory made variety. Also, I will have coffee. This coffee stuff is brilliant. Perhaps it should be our next Governor General?

    I must add toast to my official breakfast itinerary!

    TOAST!

    always more toast

    when I turned 16 my friends threw another friend and I a surprise party where a heavy metal band played.  It was pretty awesome, there were maybe 20 good friends there, and this crazy metal band from Ottawa.  It was so loud that a neighbour from a kilometer up the road (in the country) came down to see what was going on and enjoy the music.

    Purple Bagel & Coffee for me!

    I filed a return awhile ago. Turns out my collection of Corey Hart cassettes can't be used as a dependent?

    You're awfully questiony today, Vish

    Being the younger sibling of two guitar playing brothers, pretty much every day of the summer was a free concert put on in the garage.

    But having grown up in a rural, farming community, I've also been to many a barn party with the bands that were hot at the time.

    But at any of these "concerts", I never was served or consumed pancakes. Mostly just beer.

    I did have pancakes at the Kinsmen Sugar Bush Maple Syrup Festival last year though. But they didn't have a band. Just horses.

    And to close, for breakfast today I'm having a big dish of trying to wakeup after an excellent Sloan concert last night

    Did I hear Ghost Bees say 'music in the morning, get drunk in the afternoon'? Because if so I think they stole Craig's mantra.

    good morning everyone :)

    I think I'm going to skip breakfast today... not feeling so swell. But Rae Spoon is pretty swell :)

    I've never attended a musical gathering at a home... but i've always wanted to attend one. Perhaps I'll have to crash someone's musical gathering sometime.

    I "looked" at your video. it's a "great" video Vish. Very "well" done.

    I'm sorry you're under the weather but random quoting will not help your condition. Thanks for watching the video though. That should help things...

    @Vish

    I actually watched that video when you posted it on stalkbook a few days ago. I quite enjoyed the performance. Rae Spoon is great at the pre-song 'stage' banter.

    Meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow...

    Wax Mannequin writes many songs from a cat's perspective...

    Thanks Mike. Yes, and the in-song banter as well.

    Vish

    "i'm sorry" Vish.

    also, maybe Wax Mannquin is a cat, ever think of that?

    @Vish

    Yes obviously the in-song banter is great too.

    Also I am going to send Wax Mannequin a ball of yarn. He will like that.

    maybe i'll make apple pancakes for breakfast :)

    re: Wrath of Khanna: The Breakfast Club with Rae Spoon & Ghost Bees

    I've been to a house cconcert, where Wax Mannequin played. BOOM. It was a friend's moving-to-Australia party. I didn't know anyone else. So while Mr Mannequin was good, I was a bit uncomfy.

    And I am eating, as usual, oat cluster cheerios with OJ.. and vitamins.

    (but the audio cuts cutting out on me and I'm getting mad and that's no way to start the day so I might duck out early)

    I like waffles too because they're pancakes with ridges. They're like the rippled potato chip to the regular potato chip.

  26. Vish Khanna
    26

    @MoniSki

    What the hell is a "thumps up?" Is this how the kids are talking now?

  27. MikeV
    27

    @Vish

    I hear you loud and clear. However, I sincerely hope they don't start making ketchup flavoured waffles and pancakes.

    Thumps Up!

    The kids these days just want to thump up all night long.

    Guys, guys! Guys, I changed the video up there! I changed it from a Rae Spoon video to a Ghost Bees video! Guys! You should watch that video guys!

  31. MikeV
    31

    @Vish

    I have no idea what it means. No idea at all, but it sounds dirty so I will use it. Also, I am watching the video!

    can't think of a house concert but

    there used to be an annual Barn Dance at my Uncles farm when I was small.  Local musicians played, some fantastic organ/guitar type music.  It was a major highlight for me cuz at 5 I got to stay up past midnight and fall asleep in the back seat of the car.  These dances were ALL nighters!

    No pancakes, but a whole roast pig (apple in mouth and all) and major spread put out at 1AM.

    Thanks for triggering this beautiful memory of my childhood.

    speaking of pancakes

    I added wheat germ, oatmeal and raisins to my homemade pancakes last weekend.  It was fantastic!

    Today I'm having yogurt without the granola.  I think I might look up your recipie this weekend, dawn.h

    And yes the videos are great!

    Hi, Vishans!

    Vish, you're clearly channeling Internets cats on comment 8.

    As for breakfast, I had some Multi-Grain Cheerios and then made some toast which I am actively eating right now because somebody mentioned toast and that made me want toast. I had hoped to be enjoying a purple bagel, but I haven't gone grocery shopping within the past couple days so I had no opportunity to buy bagels.

    If there were a concert with pancakes, I'd be all over that like white on rice. That sounds like basically the greatest idea ever.

    And calling waffles just "ruffled pancakes" does a huge disservice to wafflekind! They're crispier and Alton Brown says they're different, so, uh, there.

    Why didn't anyone tell me I misspelled "Street" in today's post?

    Who got my back? My peoples, where you at?

  39. Vish Khanna
    39

    @Paul Fisher

    No disrespect intended to to wafflers and extended members of the waffle community. I do love a good waffle, it's true.

  40. Paul Fisher
    40

    Vish Khanna:38

    Well, if you're looking for that, "50 odd" should probably be "50-odd". Unless you're describing a gathering of fifty strange people, not that there's anything wrong with that.

  41. Caspianette
    41

    Prince Caspian and Oatmeal

    The largest house show I've been to was to see Prince Caspian play. There was no room to move around, but everyone danced anyway.

    Also, mad love for Rae Spoon. I love everything  he does and am really hoping to see him perform again soon.

    Cheers!

    PS. Oatmeal with brown sugar for breakfast = Good times.

  42. Vish Khanna
    42

    @Paul Fisher

    Excellent, I fixed that too. See, that's what I'm talking about.

  43. Paul Fisher
    43

    Unnecessary pun comment

    I do enjoy both types of batter-based breakfast delights. I can't decide which one I prefer, and I sometimes go back and forth.

    One might say I waffle.

  44. Vish Khanna
    44

    @Paul Fisher

    Hmmm, is there any way I can fiix your last comment?

  45. MikeV

    That may have been my fault. This is why we can't have nice things.
