Wrath of Khanna: The Breakfast Club in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, & Winnipeg

Posted by Vish Khanna on Mar 18, 2010

Hey hey. I'm in a motel in Kamloops on my way to the Vancouver stop of the Hear Some Evil Tour tour tonight. Things are fine after a refreshing stay with my in-laws in Edmonton (thanks legally binding mom and dad!) and at least one amazing show at All Citizens in Bruno, SK, which you'll learn more about on tomorrow' s WoK. If you listen that is. As for today, hey look--it's the Breakfast Club! Awww, look how cute it is...it thinks it's people...

Today's show features highlights and lowlights from breakfasts we've had in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Winnipeg. Wait, we didn't actually eat in Sudbury. It was some town outside of it, really early in the morning. But the other two, they happened for sure. You'll hear all about them today, so please listen.

Have you ever eaten breakfast some place outside of Sudbury or Thunder Bay or Winnipeg before? If so, where? Have you been enjoying my coverage from the road? You can be honest. I'm doing my best out here. What are YOU having for breakfast for today?

    Hello Vish!

I have to say I have not been to any of those places, and thus have not had the pleasure to dine anywhere near them as well.

Am I enjoying the coverage? Absolutely! Although I have come to the conclusion that the Sudbury Tourism Bureau has its work cut out for them.

As for breakfast I am having some yogurt and granola, english muffin, and coffee. It's become my standard.

    Sudbury

My family used to vacation at a lake west of Sudbury, so I've been there many times.  As a kid there's lots to do there, Science North, touring the mines, tons of outdoors stuff.  As a 20 or 30 something... I guess there's still the outdoors stuff.

Always enjoy Vish on Ice(y roads) tour reports.

    Purple bagel ahoy!

No, I've never eaten breakfast in places that exotic.

But I did used to work at McDonald's.

And I did work the breakfast shift.

    Breakfast

Never in or around Sudbury have I had it.  It is against my faith to eat within a 40km radius of Sudbury or its waters.

    @Martin

If you recall Martin I don't actually care for music. I just listen to this radio station for weather forecasts, and last night's sports scores.

    Favourites

Honestly...I don't even technically know how to add artists to my favourites list.  I just usually mash the keyboard when I hear something I like...just a rudimentary pavlovian response.

McKerrow, Ontario (Where Vish ate Tim's)

Is part of the Township of Baldwin. I found these announcements on their website that no doubt were posted in response to Vish's visit.

"Please take note that, by bringing your garbage to the roadway the morning of garbage pick-up, you will help deter bears roaming through town in search of food sources. We hope that the community will take an active part in deterring nuisance bears."

"NO OPEN BURNING Due to fire restrictions no open burning will be allowed in the Township between the months of April to November. All outdoor fires must be contained in a barrel and covered with a grate. If a fire should spread M.N.R. would have to be called in at a great cost to the Municipality."

    re Favourites

Similar to daa1982I don't use them properly so don't get too excited. I tend to 'favourite' songs to remind me to buy the album or google something (I often forget what). Hmm. I should stop it if this isn't working for me.

    To Vish's blog questions..

I do enjoy the from-the-road coverage. And LOVE this breakfast idea (wonder why). But I miss regular Vish so look forward to his return.

(and wonder if we'll find out who wins the last of the books tomorrow)

I am eating.. well nothing yet.. But it will be OJ and cereal soon. Even though I have my annual physical today and should have fasted (I forgot to but they never called to remind me of my appointment).

I think I can only answer one of your questions...

I'm actually having a good breakfast this morning!! I'm quite exciting. A croissant that I've filled with jelly... some fibre cereal with fresh bananas and some blueberry yogurt! So good!!! The sunshine makes me feel like eating all these goodies.

    btw... Good Morning Everyone :)

I had breakfast hours ago.  "Frosties", the Kellogg's version of Frosted Flakes sold here in Scandinavia.  30% less sugar!  Which actually makes them taste more like plain old corn flakes...  boooooooring, but I had to try them.

Vish I hope you guys had a good time in Tbay.  I love and miss that place!  My favourite breakfast spot by far there is the Hoito.  Calico's coffee is also a good place to stop after a Hoito breakfast.

...ah.... just remembering what a nice spring morning might look like on Bay St...

Good morning! This coverage from the road is great. In homage to this mish-mash of Breakfasts combined into one Club, here's a mish-mash of various comment bits combined into one semi-coherent post.

I just got done with some store-brand frosted mini-wheats, and a nice glass of chocolate milk, from a glass bottle. Mmmmmm.

I wish I regularly had breakfast at places that awesome, Vish. As it stands, the most interesting place I eat breakfast regularly is Jay's, the local 24-hour diner. Unfortunately, I'm never there at like 3:00 or 4:00 AM, which is when all the really sketchy, drunk, and otherwise interesting people go there (apparently). And if I ever get a hankering for crack I'll be sure to hit up Guelph.

dawn.h: what kind of physical do you have to fast before? This is new on me.

metsamies: 30% less sugar than Frosted Flakes? Does that mean that "THEYYYYY'RE… okay, I guess"?

yes, that I would say describe them perfectly!

Vish...I wasn't able to listen to the show this morning, so maybe you talked about Winnipeg's breakfast, but I hope Ricardo at the Lo Pub sent you in the right direction for a great, classic Winnipeg breakfast. Last time we played there he sent us to a place called 'The Falafel Place'. Apparently in Winnipeg, the thing to do is to eat falafels for breakfast. We were bit unsure about how that would go over, it turned out to be AMAZING! I can't recommend it enough, they had many, many different versions of the classic falafel and various falafel breakfasts. If you haven't been, I highly recommend checking it out. The most random part of the breakfast, was having an R3 fan recognize due to Ryan's radio 3 scarf. I think it was biospice who also happened to be eating breakfast there that morning...so it's got r3 listener cred as well.
