R3Labs: The R3 40 Million

Posted by R3Labs on Mar 04, 2010

Hidden deep beneath the surface of the R3 website, guarded by a team of trained rabbits and layered under a deep film of secrecy, there is a huge pile of pristine, untouched data.

Gathered over the last 9 years, this massive store of information is a treasure trove for music fans and info-nerds alike. Here at R3Labs, we've been working hard to dig through this data. Over the next few weeks, we'll share our discoveries, and build a set of useful web-based tools that will let you do some exploring of your own. Our goal with R3Labs is to put this data to work for listeners, for bands, and for R3 itself.

What can we do with this data? Well, for starters, take a look at the above video. Each tiny coloured block represents a user listening to a track. Not surprisingly, listenership is concentrated in Canada, but you can see a lot of hot spots in the USA and elsewhere in the world (R3 seems to get a lot of play, for instance, in Cuba! Fidel? Are you listening?)

It can also give us answers to some fairly straight-forward questions:

  • What is the most-played song on R3? ('Love Letter' by Stars, with 83,890 plays)
  • What is song in the most user playlists? ('Weighty Ghost' by Wintersleep on 3,417 playlists).

But it also lets us dig deeper into the psyche of the R3 community and ask more in depth questions.

  • Which band member is most often listed first in band profiles? (guitar)
  • What about last? (the drummer)
  • What province listens to the most country songs by percentage of plays? (Quebec)
  • What about metal? (Alberta)
  • Or Hip Hop? (Newfoundland)

There are thousands of questions to ask, and even more answers to be found. We'll be posting all kinds of goodies in the upcoming days, but of course, we need your help:

What would you like to find out from the Radio3 data stores?

We'd love to hear your suggestions.

[R3Labs is Colin Brumelle and Jer Thorp.]

    Video question

In the video, there's a hotspot on/near the West Coast, north of what I think is Vancouver.  Is that Prince Rupert?  I can't quite tell.

If you scan to the end of the video, the "camera" pans down to the West Coast, and yes... it looks like Prince Rupert spends a fair bit of time listening to r3

    Hi!

There have been 7,017 track plays in Price Rupert, so it very well may be!

The data set also contains a set of 'imaginary places' - for example the big bright light near Hudson Bay is the point that appears for track plays coming from 'Canada' in general. So the strange coastal music hub could very well be the imaginary capital of BC, as well.

We are working on an interactive tool that will let you explore this data in really really fine detail, which should make an appearance over the next month or so. You'll be able to look at track plays for any geographic location, and even break it down into plays by individual bands in a specific city.

    Cheers!

    Dear R3Labs,

Cool!  I suspect that Prince Rupert isn't actually listening more than Edmonton, but it would be cool if they were.

My geeky curiosity has been piqued.  I'd love to see what comes out of the interactive tools.  I've been living outside of Canada for the entire lifespan of R3, so I like the idea of comparing habits with other expats and other nations.

The expat thing is something we've talked about exploring - Perhaps overlaying track plays with data about where Canadians are living abroad.

I'd like to expand on burgandy's question (5). What is the most listen song per country?

Sweet. There are a few spots in the video where there are massive flares or spikes in tracks played (for example, the last few days of 2002). It would be neat to see if these jumps correlate with a specific event like a band getting a lot of attention or certain media coverage for R3. Looking forward to what else the Labs have hidden in their beakers.
