    Best Rock and Roll Movie

Ramones: end of a century, I suppose it is more of a documenary. I love the interviews with Dee Dee Ramone and Johnny Ramome...ohh I guess I love all the interviews with all the Ramones..even Elvis Ramone ;) I also really like Rock and Roll High School for the really bad acting.

I'm a sappy romantic at heart

So I'd have to go with Almost Famous. The Last Waltz always get played a few times a year too.

The movie that still makes me stop and smile -

And alas, shows my age: A Hard Day's Night by the Beatles.  A magical time for music.  And what's more amazing, it really was like that with the screaming girls.

I would have to concur with Boders and pick Almost Famous. However, for a laugh though I still find This Is Spinal Tap hard to beat.

is this a rock and roll movie?

    The Fishing With John Series?

They were great! I mean he has a some musical guests and talks alot about rock and roll?

    (best intro EVER!)

I would have to go ahead and agree with MikeV re the Tap. Some people hate Christopher Guest. I am not some people. Turn it up. You know to what setting.

I just watch part of a Hard Day's Night over Christmas! Didn't get to watch it all the way through though, still, it was some quirky Beatles fun.

I haven't seen a lot of rock and roll movies so I can't really comment on my favourite.

Hey Grant, Chris, Andrew, Andrea, everyone else involved in bringing R3 on Ice

Thanks for putting on a really fun morning yesterday! My quads are a little achey, but the blister situation was not as bad as I thought it would be..thanks tb3.

I know I hassled you yesterday, so I won't any more than this. I promised the girls(and Matt from Wales) at the rink that I'd bug you again about getting them some CBC swag (they were there at 5am!). I have the managers contact info incase anything is possible to ensure it gets to those who were actually there early (some trickster who arrived at 10 was the only one to get a scarf that I could see...)

Wow, I've seen all but 3 of the best pic nominees. But it's been a pretty bad year for film, I'd say. So I have no real thoughts about a winner.

One of my fave music movies is Almost Famous. Or does that count since it's more about music than real songs?

  21. Absotively
    21

    Oscars

I've seen Precious, but not any of the others.

I've decided that I probably should go see Avatar, but it's lower on my to-see list than Young Victoria, which I'm hoping to get to this weekend.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday - The Movie Edition!

I have three current favourites.    "Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus" about a guy who sets out to find a mysterious country/blues singer named Jim White, and discovers the complex underbelly of the american south.    Then "Dig".  Even though I don't really like either of the bands (Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols), it's a helluva ride.  And "Control" movie about Joy Division, and in particular, Ian Curtis.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday - The Movie Edition!

LOVE Spinal Tap.  My friend and I watched Spinal Tap during a class about documentary film and could not stop laughing at the back of the class.  And our laughs were very audible.

As for a favourite rock 'n' roll film...I don't really have one.  At least I can't really think of one at the moment...

    re:  Oscars Best Picture films

I saw An Education and that was really good.  Seriously, there is something about Peter Sarsgaard that is both appealing and creepy.

  25. Christine McAvoy

    @boders

I know! i was up at 9! stupid skating party has made me think thats the time I should be awake!

I REALLY enjoyed the rehearsal... the opening is dramatic and then EXCITING.

Things I did not like: The national anthem...it was REALLY over the top and you can't sing along to it. There's a tame acrobatic thing during a live performance that had the guy beside me yawning annnnnd not to give too much away but there's what feels like the white man opressing the first nations. And I wasn't the only one to notice this.

other than that, the performances should be pretty cool.

  26. tagish156
    26

    Dazed and Confused

There's enough classic rock in that movie to fill an encyclopedia.  I also like that it takes place around the same time my parents gradded from high school and it pretty much describes a typical weekend for my high school years.  Drive around, hang out, go to bush party, alright alright alright.

The Devil & Daniel Johnston is brilliant.  That's probably my #1 (today, anyway).  However, the totally sappy, rom-com lovin' side of me liked Once.  After watching that, I felt I could come out with a hit record if I just walked down the right street.

Re: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ROCK N ROLL MOVIE?

tagish156 beat me to it!  Number two on my all time favorite films list is Dazed and Confused which has to count as a Rock N Roll movie right?

Hard Days Night is fun.  The Wall is pretty entertaining.  Spinal Tap is amazing.  But my second favorite, and it's also a guilty pleasure, is That Thing You Do.  Steve Zahn  so funny...

Mr. White: Next, this "Oneders", with the O-N-E, it doesn't work. It's confusing. From now on, you boys'll just be... simply The Wonders. Lenny: As in, I *wonder* what happened to the O'Needers?

    School of Rock

School of Rock is sort of a rock movie.

It is one I like a lot.

I try to show it to my class each year. I would like to do something like that.

I am going to try to do that next week.

  34. tb3
    34

My favourite Rock &/or Roll Movie

In a league of it's own:

    Almost Famous

    And then:

    Anvil! The story of Anvil

    Hedwig and the angry inch

    A Mighty Wind

    This is Spinal Tap

    Highway 61

    Kiss Meets the Phantom

    Singles

    The Rutles

    That Thing You Do

Decline of Western Civilization II: The Metal Years

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

It feels like we need to separate the real, from the fiction fromthe mockumentary here cause there are so many good ones.

  35. benkmyers

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday - The Movie Edition!

How about Anvil: The Story of Anvil... documentary about a Canadian metal band that never quite made it. It won several awards last year. Hard to tell if it's based on Spinal Tap, or if it just justifies that film.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday - The Movie Edition!

    Stop Making Sense - brilliant.

I also really liked Control, the movie profiling Ian Curtis.

    More Rock Movies

I forgot when I was a kid we used to go see 'The Jimi Hendrix Movie' followed up by 'The Song Remains the Same' at the Roxy on The Danforth in  Toronto every Friday night.

    r'n'r movies

Devil & Daniel Johnson is a REALLY good movie. Also love Wayne's World.

Anyone ever seen 24 Hour Party People?  A class had a choice between watching that or Josie and the Pussycats.  Naturally, they chose the latter, but I hear the former is quite good.

Would Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure qualify as a "rock 'n' roll" movie?

I'm not a movie person; my favourite music movie is Once. The Swell Season, the band resulting from the filming of that movie, also is one of my favourite international bands. It's not really rock and roll though. Anyone who wants a good date movie for Valentines should really consider watching this one!

Is there a better moment in any movie ever, than the scene after the party, when Rusell gets back on the bus, the band is quietly on the verge of implosion — the silent chasm of space between them erased by the mutual love of a song.

To this day Tiny Dancer will always send shivers up and almost bring me to tears.

God I love Cameron Crowe and his vision that fuses music with life in film.

    Rock movies!

I am of course partial to the Tap - it is an always will be a classic.

    Some other picks:

24 Hour Praty People; I credit this movie for getting me into The Happy Mondays who are awesome

Grease; I know all the words to all the songs and everything in between :)

The Boat That Rocked; a relatively new movie but sure to be a classic - check it out!

    my opinion?

I think Avatar should win. I didn't want it to at first, but then when I took the effort and saw it, I was amazed. if you watch how they made the film, and how the actors acted in it, it's amazing. It's a revolutionary movie and beautifully made.

I think Up would be a cute win if it did. I enjoyed that flick.

I totally forgot about District 9, and I think that's an interesting one to put up there. The story was really got me. Really really sad.

As for Rock and Roll movies, defiantly "CONTROL", this movie is based on the story of Joy Division. Very well made flick!!!!

    @Grant "A Mighty Wind"

    Your mom has impeccable taste.

And for those that don't know, A Mighty Wind was brought to us by the same braintrust behind Spinal Tap. Amazing to see Mark Shubb (coined the word "nowtro") who was Derek Smalls (the tinfoil cucumber smuggler)

That movie really showcased the comedic excellence of Ed Bagley Jr.

The process by which they make those movies (A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Guffman, ect) is an amazing read. They apparently work with little script and sequester off somewhere prior to working on the loose idea of the movie where they flesh out the story as a group. I can't remember where I read that, but it sort of explains why there are so many good performances in those movies.

A Mighty Wind, I think is my favourite.

Though Guffman and Best in Show are very close by.

no, probably not. Hearing Tiny Dancer recreates that scene perfectly in my minds eye...that in turn is enough to almost actually feel warm rays across my face from the rising sun. I've often been envious of those with synesthesia (of course they can be bad combinations, but alot of them seem to helpful). Great art is capable of fusing various sensory components and that is darn fine thing.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Trivia Tuesday - The Movie Edition!

    I've got a few votes:

    1. If it qualifies, I think Once would win.  The original soundtrack by Geln Hansard (of The Frames) and Marketa Irglova is fantastic, and its just a great story.  I think it also appeals because it was a real Cinderella Story - shot for next to nothing on two Handycams, and it won an Oscar for best original song.

    2. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - A Film About WIlco by Sam Jones.  It chronicles Wilco as they made Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and shows all the struggles they went through to make such a great album.

    3. Neil Young - Heart of Gold.  A great film that shows the Neil Young you don't often see as he premiered Prairie Wind.

Honourable mentions to Almost Famous, Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, and FUBAR.

If I had to place it, I would say it's both.  Every night of the festival, it features several writers and a musical artist reading/performing their works together in a beautiful heritage Theatre (I used to work for a theatre company and we've put off shows there too - amazing! Holy crap! Why are we playing Wilco (the song)?! Only 7 more sleeps til I see them in Saskatoon!

I guess I should've tuned in sooner, but my favorite movie is The Last Waltz.  Fubar's pretty great too, and the Wilco doc.  I'd also highly recommend the Pixies reunion tour DVD.

I know Feist sang on a Wilco song, so there's a Canadian connection there (like hearing Neko Case played).  I've noticed a few liberties over the last little while with plying non-Canadian artists, but I think it's awesome!  It really rounds out R3 in a good way.

Very curious as well as to why we're playing Wilco (without Feist).  I walked into my office to that song play and honestly thought I left my ipod on.
