For the first time ever, CBC Radio 3 is live from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island! We're hear helping celebrate PEI Music Week. This is the smallest province, yet several artists are proving that they can be very successful sticking around their Island home. This brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day:

CAN CANADIANS GET A 'FAIR SHAKE' IF THEY DON'T LIVE IN A MAJOR CITY?

Yes or no? Have you had to leave your hometown to for school, work, or get a career started? Did you want to leave? Do you want to return? Should bands try to resist moving to larger centres? Let us know by posting on our blog or emailing feedback@cbcradio3.com, or twitter @cbcradio3.

Here's our regular Friday feature...

Top 5 Gigs of the Weekend

Fri Jan 22, PEI Music Week, Charlottetown PEI. The best of PEI's music community come out to play tonight at venues all over the city! Keep a lookout for Grant's CBC Sweater!

Fri Jan 22 - Sun Jan 24, Cold Snap Festival, Prince George BC. The annual frosty fest has a banner line up this year, with Delhi 2 Dublin, Joel Plaskett, Great Lake Swimmers, and Hannah Georgas.

Fri Jan 22, The Wooden Sky, Kingston ON. Excellen, underrated Canadian indie-roots act pulls in to one of Canada's best rooms, the Grad Club.

How could you not include in your top five gigs the STEREOPHONIC 7 Friday Night Beautiful Music show at the Vogue Cinema here in Sackville, New Brunswick. For shame. Especially since it was CBC Radio 3 who was a sponsor for this very show last year. This little town alone and all of the obvious talent should speak enough to your poll question that we indeed get a fair share, if not more.

    hi grant!

i hope you are enjoying charlottetown!

i just got in and seem to have missed a bit of your show. oops. do anything exciting yet? or did i miss that bit?

i drove by the cbc building not long ago with mom. she pointed to it and said "is that where that grant fellow will be?" i said "yes mom. in fact, i think he's there right now!" she thought that was pretty neat.

if you see a crazy purple haired gal with a camera, throw something (not too hard) at her! that's me! (cause that'll be the only way i'll see you... i should really invest in some glasses maybe?)

    yay

Grant is about a block from where I'm working!

I definitely think you can make it big in a small town, as Charlottetown is evidence.  You wouldn't know it to be here, but we have under 30 000 people in this city.  The music scene defies that number.  So much so that I have to film a documentary about it.  :)

    Fair shake?

I like to think they can but it's definitely harder and takes more effort on their part to get their music out there. If you're in a big city there's already a lot of people to come to your shows, places to play, etc. Just more options in general, although I would guess if a community supports musicians that in a smaller city/town it might be easier to convince them to let you play when you're just starting. Still, getting the exposure to build a fan base seems like it would be tougher.

I had to leave my hometown to go to university and I couldn't wait to get out of there. I really love the city and have been tempted to move to a larger one than Vancouver. There's been talks of a family business starting in Nelson but I'm not sure if I could handle moving back. There'd be so few live shows, I don't really have any friends left there and no more living in the same city as R3 headquarters! Oh well, these are just talks between my brother and my dad at the moment.

@bio spice i thought i used to be the only purple haired girl here. at least, i have never come across anyone else with purple hair! but as grant mentioned, i am no longer the only one! which is quite fine by me. :)

the opening went spectacular! exceed my expectations by far. i got some really positive feedback.

as for the poll question, in this day in age where the internet rules, it no longer is dependent on moving to the Big City in hopes of "being discovered". just takes a computer and an internet connection, really. and the ability to utilize it as a tool.

so.. maybe if you lived smack in the middle of Nowhere and use tin cans & string for communication, you'd have to move..

grant, twitter told me you were at baba's last night. how did you like it? sweet o is as delicious as everyone says it is, but you must have 2 other people with you to drink it! (i am willing to take one for the team!)

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Charlottetown Special w/ Two Hours Traffic, English Words, Back Alley Music, and Top 5 Gigs of the Weekend!

I think I was left on my parents' doorstep by a band of gypsies, because I've had a bit of a wandering spirit. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had to leave my hometown (Regina) to find work, but I did because I wanted to see other places. (Regina then wasn't quite the same as Regina now, I can't say I was sorry to leave it twenty years ago when I left).

But then, I'm in I.T. and not music, so it's different, I think.

After moving back and forth across the country (as far East as Montreal and as far West as Calgary, so only half the country, really - but I've been to Halifax, NB, and PEI!), I'm now back on the Prairie, in Toontown. It's much less frenetic than Toronto, but much more frenetic than it needs to be.

I'd like to go somewhere with less Winter, and affordable real estate, and a lot of I.T. jobs. I think Toontown may be it, except for the Winter part, and the real estate (but we got here before that insanity happened), and the jobs...other than that, it's perfect!

I left Prince Rupert to go to school.  Unless I'd wanted to take something the community college offered, I would have had to.  But that didn't matter, because I wanted to.

Thanks to facebook, I do know that some of my high school class stayed or went back, and they generally seem to be doing alright.  None of them have become famous, but neither have any of us who left.

I think there are still things that you need to move to cities for, but not as many as there once were.

Can I get a fair shake in a small town?

Yes and No.  In my experience I did have to leave the Yukon for school.  However I could've stayed and gone to the college there, but I am glad I left.  I think its important to get away from one's hometown for a while and the Yukon has some great programs to encourage people to go to university and then return.  Every Yukon high school grad gets the Yukon Grant, which is five grand a year for five years.  A very good stimulus for any post secondary education.  Then there's a program that hires students over the summer in their field of study and pays them remarkably well.  Once I graduate from UVic there's another program that hires recent grads as interns for the government to get them started in a career.  They try really hard in the Yukon to not lose any talent base.

I love that Haywire just got mentioned on the show!  Come on..can't go to PEI without mention of it's 80's kings! Play "Dance Desire"  Come on, do it!!

In two trips to Halifax for vacations, I was so pleased to see how vaulted their music kings were.  The first trip there was a wall mural of Plaskett on Barrington.  Second time, Matt Mays!  It felt like Austin, TX..their musicians were heros.  The way it should be.  Seems like artists can stay in their homes in Canada and be recognized, even treasured!  I do not know if they can make money on enough gigs when they are not touring however.

I think musicians can get a fair shake in a smaller city.  As long as the music is good and Radio 3 exists, why not?  The New Music Canada Artist Page is a wonderful tool.  How else would the world know about bands like The Mountains & The Trees?

People thought I was crazy to move back to Detroit after being away for five years.  A great opportunity took me away and also brought me back.  The only place I'd move now might be TO; friends & family there and the music...ohhhh, the music...

Leaving town: yes, but only for touring

Even if a band is in a larger town, it may well have to be frequently absent. You don't a) make it big nor b) stay big if you don't tour, as a rule. You stay a local band.

All the more so will a band from a smaller town have to tour extensively.

That said, I think that not living in a big city all the time is often an important factor in a band's relative freshness; thus, it's a good thing for them to return home to recharge their batteries, creative and otherwise.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Charlottetown Special w/ Two Hours Traffic, English Words, Back Alley Music, and Top 5 Gigs of the Weekend!

Finishing journalism school I had to move to a small, small village in order to get a job. I was the only one out of my graduating class to land a job like I had b/c of willing to move from Belleville, Ont. to Nakusp, B.C. It all depends of the skillset of the people involved in being able to survive in a small town or needing more opportunities in a larger centre.

As for bands ... local scenes can be very positive or very negative. They can also be confusing, meaningful or meaningless. In Belleville there was a good scene of mature bands trying to play some progressive, alternative music. Then the emo/screamo kids would take over. It was sad.

Larger centres, for bands, give them more opportunity for exposure. They can play any dive they want, usually, as long as they're willing to get crap pay. In small town, usually it's bands paying to play and often the organizer losing money trying to bring in 'bigger' bands to their shows.

It's definitely a challenge. It depends on your genre and identifying the personalities that like your music and adapting to perhaps the where. If you don't want to change your style, you may have to move to somewhere more supportive.

Unless of course you don't care and have the confidence to continue no matter the consequences. Then good for you and keep making music.

When Joel came to San Francisco to open for the Tragically Hip several years ago, I asked him that very question: were the lines in the song, Love This Town,  specifically directed to Sloan?  He laughed, and answered, "No, not really."

    Good afternoon blog

Glad to hear that the opening went well for Moe and Martin...should be an awesome weekend. Have a great time Grant!

re: My opinion on the poll question, as it is with most substantive matters, is; It depends. It's what works for you and what a given community is capable of. Of course you can make it 'big' coming from a small city, as per Martin's earlier comment. I'm originally from Thunder Bay, which has a population of 100,000 plus. While there is a local music scene there, it is oftentimes rather wanting. (Full and fair disclosure: I didn't spend as much time or effort seeking out shows in Thunder Bay as I have since moving to Vancouver). There isn't much weight in this judgement, but from anecdotes, it sounds as if the music scene in Charlottetown is just as big if not bigger than what Thunder Bay has to offer.

Personally, I did not have to leave to find work, and if I had elected to stay in university, Lakehead is a fine school. But to be happy I had too. I've always wanted to live in a larger city. I want to live in a place where adding transportation infrastructure doesn't always mean adding/expanding highways (these are not inherently bad things either). I want to live where progressive voices are and where they are taking action. These are all personal choices though. I will always have a huge love and respect for rural/small town living. At this point in my life however it's a luxury that I'm willing to give up so many other things for. But I will always be going back to Thunder Bay...I'm a year in Vancouver at the end of the month, and 'home' is still reflexivly TBay in discussion.

No, I was not balling while listening to Left and Leaving as part of Grant's top 20 of the 2000's podcast while skating at Robson Square...just happily and sadly crying to myself. Not balling. Taste the happy Michael

    dear Boders

you're so polite - building more highways in areas that already have highways IS inherently bad. It wastes resources, covers over more earth which in turn increases runoff & flooding risk. And, about a week after it's built, it's full of traffic and people are bitching because they have to wait a  few minutes in traffic.

That's part of what I alluded to about Toontown when I said "it's more frenetic than it needs to be." People here think they're hard done by if it takes them 20 minutes to get from downtown to their resource-chugging 3000 sq ft suburban dream home on the edge of town. Really, Saskatoon doesn't have much in the way of traffic problems and there's so much more we could spend money on than building wider roads. I personally think that anyone in Toontown who complains about traffic needs to pick up their father-in-law from Pearson at 5:00 PM and then drive back to East York (an hour and a half to do that little jaunt!)

On a different note, I think you meant "bawling" instead of "balling." If you were "balling" while skating at Robson Square, I would say that a) you're very talented and b) you're not very shy :-)

  52. tagish156

    Victoria Music Scene

I would not consider Victoria a small town at all and it has a fairly vibrant music scene.  There's once thing going against it though and that is that its on an island.  The short hop to Vancouver is in reality not very short nor very convenient and thus we find many a Victoria band relocating to Van for convenience.  The Racoons and Black Mountain but to name a few.  Its hard to say whether this can be stopped or is entirely necessary as I think a band can still make it and be based out of Vic.  Either way I don't think a band should stop repping its Victoria roots even when they make the move to Vancouver.

I thought eating butter tarts after Christmas was like wearing white after Labour Day.

They were always made in my house as part of my mom's Christmas baking extravaganza. I follow in her footsteps, but I'm too lazy to make pastry, so I use her recipe for "Butter Tart Slice," which is like making a cake pan of butter tarts on top of shortbread. much easier and combines two of my favourite baked goods!

(and yes, they're made with real butter. We don't even have margarine in the house).

For example I believe that the twinning of the 400 past Barrie is a good investment on balance. Oftentimes for safety reasons rebuilding is necessary. I would also say that I've supported the improvements on the Sea-to-Sky highway. This isn't just because I'm an Olympics apologist. (I don't neccesarily think that I am one, I just want to have a balanced view of things, but someone did call me this the other day after I showed them some pieces on my blog.)

based on your spelling police hats, and your question in [58] I pressume you have a healthy love of language (hooray!). Where you lucky enough to hear the show 'And sometimes Y' on Radio1 for it's run a few years ago? I love that kinda stuff. If you do too, and haven't already, Steven Pinker has some great books on linguistics and the insight into neuroscience that linguistic studies can provide.

A vinyl-to-mp3 conversion station! What a great idea. I can make this happen with my current turntable, preamp and computer, but it is tedious and a pain in my butt to do. If I could do this at a record shop with a player built to do this I would be very happy. Does this exist in Vancouver (yet)?

Can I get a fair shake?

    No, no I never did.

i grew up on a farm that was closer to Dog River than any major Canadian city. When I decided where to go to university, I knew I would have to move off the farm and into the city. I moved into Brandon, which is a booming city itself, but I quickly realized that it was a very glorified farm town. Everyone seems to know everyone here, rumours spread QUICKLY, and everyone alway seems to have a beef. Also, if you didn't grow up here, tough luck making friends.

With that, bands absolutely REFUSE to play Brandon, why bother? It's not a Winnipeg or Regina, so there's no use. Almost every indie band that exists drives RIGHT PAST Brandon, and will possibly stop for a pit stop or a bite to eat, but they never think about performing in Brandon as it's just a glorified farm town.

If I want to go to a show, it means that I'm going to have to save up a minimum of $60 and head into "the city" (Winnipeg). It's fun to head into the city, but when you go there a few times a year, it all adds up for a broke university graduation.

Also, in Brandon, your employment options are limited to the following: The Canadian military, hog processing, welding/metal work, fast food and call centre work. If I want a job, I'm going to have to move out of Brandon, which I'm planning to as soon as I get a job. As soon as I get a job, Good riddance Brandon, Manitoba.. you never treated me well!

  113. Benoit from Ottawa

    My complaint

In Ottawa, these days, if you don't pick up the Ottawa Xpress (a local free entertainment rag that has listings, in particular show listings), it's difficult not to miss something.

May I explain. You'd think the online listings of the XPress would be up to snuff, but they're worse than the printed ones. Since XPress got bought out by Montreal's Voir organisation -- they publish the same kind of rag in Montreal, but much more substantial, and in French) --, Voir has combined listings for Ottawa, Gatineau, Montreal and Québec (City). In-sane. An example, fwiw.

The concert calendar here at R3 (top left) often does show some acts, but only some. (And these days, not many hits for Ottawa.)

So I'm left having to go to sites individually. Easy to forget one or three.

A special case: one of them, Cafe Deckuf, well I bitched to them in November that they were still listing October dates as upcoming. It got updated. They put in the November concerts. I thought "well at least muy complaint was useful". Ha!

Their page still features the November shows. Frustrating. And they sometimes have some of the more interesting indie bands.

Bio Spice, is there a source of show listings (especially a websource) that I don't know about?

    @highways

I know it seems like you've moved on but I just got back from lunch. I've heard that highways themselves are a large problem and cause the traffic jams. If you remove the highways then traffic disperses more evenly throughout the city. I forget where but some city in the states removed a major highway and found that it actually solved their traffic problems in that area. I really wish I could remember where I read this...

I find people + cars is funny when you contrast it to me + car. It's all about your attitude towards a car and driving. Before I bought my car I considered it a complete luxury (which it is). I don't need a car but I like having one so if there's traffic, the price of gas goes up or any of that stuff that make people get the "road rage" I just shrug it off. How can I complain about it? No one's forcing me to drive, it's my choice to have to pay these. Car ownership is a privilege, not a right.

Well, there you go again being completely sane and reasonable. {GOB voice} C'mon! I know exactly where you are referencing but can't remember the name of the place. Effective transportation policy is one of my favourite hobby horses..I'll have to go digging through some blogs.

Since the subject just came up again, I'll point out that highway space AND parking space are both limited resources. That are in high demand. When demand outpaces availability, some mechanism for allocating those resources is needed. This is called a market. So while I can understand people not wanting to pay more to park downtown (Vancouver just increased rates, hooray!) it is a necessary part of the dynamic. Now, if we could pivot that energy into extending transit options, then we'd be getting somewhere
