TCNH: New Releases for August 25th, 2009

Posted by Craig Norris on Aug 25, 2009
Whoa. This may be the busiest day ever on The Craig Norris Hour! Not only will I be playing songs from albums that are being released today, I have an exhaustive collection of amazing 2sday Song Connections, too!

For your listening pleasure, I'll be playing and chatting about a whole bunch of records that are dropping this very day; Still Life Still, The Wooden Sky, Young Galaxy, Kill The Lights and THREE tracks off of Friends In Bellwoods II from Basia Bulat, Forest City Lovers, and Snailhouse!

     BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!

Listen now and you'll also receive three separate connections involving THIRTEEN artists. You simply have to hear them to believe them!

     BUT WAIT, THAT'S STILL NOT ALL!

:: I would still like to hear your song connections! Your picks can be connected by even the most tenuous strands! Comment below and I'll try to get them into the show next week!

    Oh grammar! When will thee end your assault on me?

    That should have been connecting various objects. I feel a need to correct myself every time I screw up for some reason

    I actually have some connections to your connections!

    Still Life Still: found out yesterday they're touring Canada with The Hold Steady so I'll see them at least twice in the next few weeks!

    Kill the Lights: Whatever happened to these guys? I saw them play in Saskatoon a few years ago, and they were tamborine-smashingly good. By far the hilight of that night for me. Also playing that night was K-OS and Bedouin Soundclash

    Basia Bulat: Is connected to Kill the Lights because she played at the Regina Folk Festival this year, that also featured both K-OS and Beduoin.

    And since I don't know if tb3 is going to ask this or not, how many of these releases are coming out on vinyl?!

    @MikeV

    No, I didn't.

    So I am thinking of starting one on NxEW.ca. I am going to try and get a hold of all the record labels I know that release vinyl, and ask them if they'd like to work on creating a New Release Tuesday where new and upcoming releases can be announced for us vinyl junkies.

    I figure once it gets going, all the labels and bands that have a penchant for vinyl that I don't know about, will also surface.

    I am looking to make this happen by mid to late September.

    For Craig et al.: Ottawa FolkFest 2009 (II)

    This year the Ottawa FolkFest was focused mostly, with the exception of Amy Millan, on three guy singers, two of them polished solo performers (Bruce Cockburn and Joel Plaskett), plus a surprisingly insecure Steven Page* -- he didn’t use to have to PLAY his own songs on the guitar, only to write them; the band took care of the playin’, yet here he was, all alone… He did quite all right though.

    During the Cockburn, Page, Plaskett and Ana Miura song circle, Cockburn reluctantly took the reins, however lightly. His introductions to his own grave songs were pretty long, but then on came pure Cockburn.

    Joel Plaskett was equal to himself, superlative in all ways. He regaled us with stories of having spent the two previous days in (New York’s) LaGuardia Airport, unable to get to the FolkFest. (He did indeed fail to show up for a workshop on Saturday.) He told of three girls cutting in line in front of him and snagging the last seats to Ottawa – including the one he should have had. Shrugged it off, he did.

    His headlining show with his dad, Bill, was classic Plaskett**. Self-deprecatingly charming, though not wussy in any way. He again brought up LaGuardia, and had fun adding a new verse about it in the song he was singin’. Forget which, sorry.

    Always with the eye to selling CDs and vinyl, he added a verse about it to his last song… and not without results: his CD signing line-up, after the show, was 2-3 deep and 60 long, maybe.

    He and his dad played most songs together, which added guitar ornamentation to the songs (his dad’s a fine player), but Joel did sing perhaps four of them all alone. A great show, the guy’s got lots of polish.

    Setlist (some titles may be approximate)

    Love This Town
    Pine, Pine, Pine (= X 3)
    Natural Disaster
    Deny X 3
    There’s Nothing More to Say
    You Let Me Down
    Mind’s Made Up
    Through X 3
    Light of the Moon
    Nowhere with You
    Rewind X 3
    Heartless X 3
    Happen Now
    Rollin’ X 3
    ???
    Wishful Thoughts

    Plaskett added the "public service announcement" verse about CDs in Edmonton too. To Rolling Rolling Rolling, I think, though I'm not sure.

    @rocknrollloser

    What if they made tiny neo-dinosaurs? They'd be smaller than a squirrel and with jaws not powerful enough to break your skin.

    But I think they just wanna show up those archeologists. It's like, sure you got bones and all sorts of hypothesis' based off them but us super scientist have real dinosaurs, booyah!
  59. rocknrollloser
    59

    @AlexofAnders

    Oooh like house hippo sized dinosaurs? and we could domesticate them and have them for pets?

    Okay. That'd be cute. Little sassy dinosaurs who are always picking fights with the dog.

    60

    @ Abso

    Yup, it was Rolling X 3 into which he inserted it in Ottawa too; the two next songs were encores.

    Incidentally, did you read my mention, yesterday, about meeting ExCanuck? Very nifty.

    There was a fairly recent kids movie on that theme. Google reveals it was called Aliens in the Attic.

    I think I read a YA book with that idea at one point too. The protagonist had to help the aliens.
