SPECIAL EDITION PODCAST: Women in Indie Music

Posted by Lisa Christiansen on Aug 14, 2009

A few months ago a UBC journalism intern named Amanda Ash walked into CBC Radio 3 with an idea. She wanted to find out what it's like to be an indie Canadian female artist, circa 2009.

What Amanda discovered ended up becoming the catalyst for this special CBC Radio 3 podcast. As well as interviews with Jenn Grant, Black Mountain/Lightning Dust's Amber Webber, Amy Millan of Stars and Maya Miller of the Pack AD, you'll hear music from La Patere Rose, Reverie Sound Revue, Peaches, Metric and Sarah Harmer.

It's all a bit like a chick flick without the breakups and make overs, just good stories and music.

    Nice podcast

Wow, had an amazing comment all typed out and when I hit submit, it timed out.

Oh well, to sum it up, my comment was why should it make a difference in if a musician is male or female or other (think Micachu, sorry Mic!). To me at least, I can't think of a measurable difference in quality between lyric writing, stage presence, or rockoutability between male of female. The music either floats your boat or doesn't. Simple as that.

Lisa C, can you tell me who does the first song on the podcast, the one where there mention of the MLA is over top of?

    Cheers!

    @ Karl Raupp

The song is from Peaches. And thanks for your thoughts!

    Thanks!

Thanks Lisa. If I didn't know that was Peaches I would never have associated it with her. But now that I know it is her, it couldn't be anybody but.

    Cheers!

I really enjoyed this, along with The Pack AD Session, I had a great morning of listening.

I think I will do it again tomorrow.
