Today on Lanarama: Sneaker Culture & Music

Today's Guests: Tokyo Police Club

I know this may sound stupid, but I'm on the hunt for a specific type of Nikes: the same pink pair I bought at an airport in England 5 years ago.  I feel like I'm now known for wearing crazy pink Nikes. No one else has them. I can't find them online anywhere. It's now a bizarre obsession.

These shoes have brought me to countless festivals and concerts, as well as helped me trek through Italy and were the footwear of choice when I dug up my Grandfather's old rosebush after his house was torn down. Nerdy nostalgia, eh?

But the more I talk to people about this weird connection I have with a piece of footwear, I realise It seems like there's a particular type of shoe we identify with, and the reason we wear them usually has something to do with music.

Here I go with some sweeping generalizations:

Birkenstocks/ no shoes: Hippies. Doc Martens: Goths, Grunge. Cons (you may know them as Chucks): Indie Rock/Punk. Air Force Ones: Hip Hop. Vans: Skate Punk. Uggs/ flip flops: Surfers (dude). Crocs: 80s soft rock.

Okay, clearly, the list isn't factual and you can wear/listen to whatever you want.

BUT, am I alone here? Are you a shoe aficionado? What's your pair of choice? Why? What won't you wear?

Hope you were around on saturday night..

As soon as I heard the first thunder peal on Saturday I thought of a discussion on Lanarama not too long ago that was mostly Ontario transplants to Vancouver lamenting the lack of thunderstorms....it was a beaut on Saturday + Celebration of light = awesome. Hope everyone who has been missing lightning was able to see Saturday's awesome display

Re: Today on Lanarama: Sneaker Culture & Music

I've always wondered why hipsters always wear the same footwear, all I had to do at the brandon folk fest to confirm someones a hipster is by looking at their shoes.

Also at folk fests, people just don't like wearing shoes, period. They love to dance out in the dirt.. Even if there are stones

I was actually at a friend's cabin on Gambier Island! It was amazing!

We watched the storm travel from Vancouver to us, so amazing! (I was not as mesmerized as some, but it made it even better to watch my friends!)

    Shoe junkie

When I find shoes I like, I want to buy every pair I can possibly find, so I never run out of them. I hate it when they're discontinued.

Currently, I'm wearing a pair of canvas-style Keen's. And maybe it's a sign of getting older, but when I needed a more "supportive" shoe, Keens came out on top. They're awesome, they're comfy, and my aging feet are happy.

I wonder what sweeping generalizations there are about Keen's and music?

I'm gonna go with Keen's: Canadian indie music. But that's just me ;-)

    as for the poll question

Am the anti shoe aficianado. I buy a pair of non-descript skater shoes every year for casual walking around, my black dress shoes for when I need to impress and sandals for the rest.

Here's an interesting article about the rise and fall of a shoe that often gets derided by Grant on the fashion fight club; the croc. http://www.salon.com/news/brand_graveyard/feature/2009/07/27/crocs/index.html

    Vans all the way.

    Shoes

I'm sporting a pear of Puma shoes these days don't remember the style name but i like them they have tweed on the side which I think makes them wicked awesome. I don't think mine say much about music preference though.
Got a pair of Converse picked out as soon as I find someone who lives in the states that is willing to let me get them made and shipped to them.

That's awesome! I really do enjoy seeing active weather; never ceases to amaze me how you can look over to North Van, see nothing but blue sky and sun, look down, then back up and it's as dark as can be during the day..

    Whatever's comfortable

I like shoes that aren't too expensive and will last me a few years. Don't think I have a shoe story that could compare to yours, Lana.
The only shoes I absolutely refuse to wear are Crocs, I think they are the ugliest shoes ever, no offense to anyone who wears them.

I imagine if you found white version of those Nikes, you could just dye them pink.

As for myself, I wear flats alot (no particular designer, etc.).

@ TashaDee I do the same. My Rockport knockoffs for work are purchased 2 at a time and my Avia Cross Trainers (every other waking moment) are purchased the same way. I guess I don't care about the hipness, but more about comfort.
  13. CDNz1
    13

    @ Lana

It's still incredible to me that you have a pair of shoes that lasted 5 years. 3 - 4 is the best I can do with the Avias, and I'm tough on shoes.

    @Satori

i second the 'ugly crocs'. i refuse to acknowledge their existence.
i like any funky looking shoe. i am working up the nerve to drop some big monies for a pair of campers.
i was just at hillside and there is something to be said for the feeling of walking around barefoot all weekend. the mud just added one more texture.
  15. Absotively
    15

    Comfort

Comfort is the number one thing for me. I'll definitely pick nice-looking comfortable shoes over ugly ones, but I'll pick ugly comfortable shoes over pretty uncomfortable shoes every time. I'm slowly acquiring more shoes that are both nice-looking and comfortable.

I'm currently wearing fantastically comfortable sport sandals from MEC. They cost more than I usually pay for sandals, but they're resoleable, so hopefully they'll last for ages.

I have a pair of red Earth Shoes mary janes, which are remarkably hippie-ish. They're not as comfortable without thin socks, because they rub, so I don't wear them in the summer much.

I used to have a pair of black ballet-flat style crocs, and I loved them, though I'd never wear the clog-style ones. But they wore out and I believe that style's discontinued.

After that, I have way too many cheap dress shoes that I almost never wear, one pair of good running shoes, and one pair of winter boots that I need to replace.

The local goth clothing/ren faire clothing/pagan stuff shop had a sidewalk sale the other day, so I went and looked inside too. I had a sudden desire to buy Doc Martens, but it faded when I left.

    Vancouver's light show

The lightning on Saturday night was awesome. I, too, thought of the R3 storm conversation.

I was at the lantern festival for the evening. While the rain did cancel/ruin some of the lanterns, the lightning made up for it. And dancing to drums in the middle of rain, thunder and lightning is so energizing.

Sandals or rubber boots were appropriate for that night - I was in sandals.

  19. Absotively

I never had a grunge phase. Maybe that's the problem. I think it was more a desire to relive a goth phase, which I also never had, so it was weird.

    20

    @Absotively

Okay well you should probably stay out of the goth store then.
  21. Absotively

    @keydive

But goth stores are the best place to buy the hair dye I use to dye my hair orange-ish.

I can't bleach it to dye it really bright orange until after my sister's wedding next summer, because I promised I'd have it natural coloured for that.

or is that just it.. you subconsciously realize the world is going to hell and soon there will be nothing of this way of life left (secular-materialism) and you just want to cash in materialistically and experience-wise as much as you can before the game is all over??

    1. You can write "fuck" on this blog. You don't have to resort to creative punctuation.

    2. So we should never do anything that doesn't directly fix some problem, and everything we do should be perfect? I assume you never ever buy anything made in a sweatshop, nor US tomatoes in the winter (the workers there are treated nearly as badly), nor electronics (almost all made in nasty conditions in ways that pollute horribly; how are you on the internet, anyways), nor factory-farmed meat, nor any of the many other things that are horrible for the world that we're under so much pressure to consume?

you're right for fucks sake.. im a hypocrite to some degree.. of course..... im on a computer that i purchased, which is apart of the whole system of globalization etc.
i guess my main point is to be IN THIS WORLD BUT NOT >OF< IT................... I'm getting ready for the whole shit to hit the fan.. i believe it isn't crazy to do so, it is inevitable that a non-renewable, unsustainable way of life will simply and scientifically not endure... this is the highlight of it all, this stage that we are in... I'm growing my own food, just looking for ways out of relying on US tomatoes and chinese factory made shit such as NIKES etc.. im not Jesus, nor should i really hark on anyone for their ways, i don't mean to seem just as ignorant as the system that i condemn... i just think the hip and coolios of the Western world should be just a tinge more in tune with the bigger issues such as the ramifications of globalization, the pre-emptive wars and false-flag terror attacks, the scare tactics of the Eugenists World Elite Banking Cartel and how they are implementing their agenda of a one world gov't right before our eyes... isn't this a little more important than going on about pink nikes????????????????????????????????? or im just a fucking asshole, who just needs to party more and not give a shit and lead a nihilistic life of bliss????????

It's true that there are a lot of problems, but I think we can still make time for art in our lives. And Radio 3 is about music, so you'll see a lot more discussion about art here than about other things. That doesn't mean that people here don't worry about other things; I asked people about eco-villages on Wednesday and we had an interesting discussion about that, and quite a few people here had opinions or information to share. But that's not the focus of this site, so that's not the focus of most conversations here. And people don't like to have it assumed that because they're discussing shoes now, they never worry about anything else.

Ya, my last buy was Vans as well

Pink and brown ones. I am on my feet all day for work, and sensible shoes makes the difference between feeling bagged after work, or still having energy left for fun.

I confess to having a pair of Jesus sandals that are my Folk Fest shoes, they only come out once a year. Comfie and impervious to mud.

My favourite shoes ever were Sketchers, everyone loved them! But within 3 months, my little toes were poking out the sides, they were made like crap. I still wear them, though, they are so great.

    well said!

are you in Sask? I'm curious to know what's around because I've been researching it. So far there's only really Craik. I love what Craik is doing, but their ecovillage is really more of an eco-friendly housing development than an actual ecovillage. (ie, no community house/kitchen or anything - just a bunch of lots that have no utilities coming to them)

Well, if I feel like being obvious I'll of course bust the cowboy boots when I play, otherwise I'm a big fan of the $5 mary janes found on Commercial Drive/China Town, with a lovely selection of dragons, roses, pheonixes...oh yah ;O)

    Ah shoes…

Vans take up the largest portion of my shoe collection. But also I love $3 cheap flat and murder on your posture flip flops.

I like to through in the odd pair of Pumas – no not the très douchie quasi F1 driver slash cyclist slash dress shoe – just a nice pair of runners with their good arch support. And cushy Cell soles.

My biggest rule about shoes is they should never be bought at more than half price, and you can never have too many.
  38. Absotively
    38

    @krib

Nope, Alberta. Willing to move, though, if I found the right place.

I know Craik's ecovillage is a bit lacking, but I figure that if they were enthusiastic about building it & it's been working out well, then they might be a lot more open than other places to approving off-grid cob buildings with composting toilets. So probably a good place to fulfil my dream of living sustainably within walking distance of a public library.

My preferenc would be to have some kind of co-housing community in Craik (probably in the town proper, rather than on the other side of the highway with the eco-village).

I've been in Keen Newports all summer long (and spring, too). When it's cold I put socks on. I was told I should be at the Winnipeg FF by Grant on one of his fashion fight club shows because of that! (no doubt while he was wearing his little shrunken-head-hipster straw fedora :-)

I sent him a link to the "sandals" I was talking about after the show - they're more like webbed shoes than sandals.

When it's time for new closed-in shoes, I'll be heading to The Better Good, a new shop here in Toontown that sells recycled shoes (made from old tire treads and reclaimed cloth from garment factories).

    Hi Lana,

Hey, I just wanted to say hearing you speak on my rant was humbling... I see that you are a conscious being that isn't just totally wrapped up in superficial things. I just get very frustrated with culture in Vancouver, Canada, North America... But overall, there is ways of going about 'being the change you wanna see' and negative rants on music blogs on the end of the world isn't always productive in doing so... I see that you and others here are concerned in the bigger issues too and there isn't always great folly in being involved in the arts and fashion. I just hope we realize that this current way of life in the West isn't sustainable and there are great changes that lie ahead here within our generation which include living simpler without Nike shoes...

I grew up with three older, loving sisters and was always inspired to live life compassionately in regards to all others on this planet, and I apologize for sending any negative energy down anyone's spine. I realize that these words can stretch out farther than what I imagined and I just wanna say that ultimatley I just wanna live in a world where loving neighbours of all of planet earth is commonplace and sometimes with how dyspotic things seem I get all wrapped up in negativity in how there is a lack of natural affection toward each other as a whole with our way of life and all the destruction involved... That creates a catch-22 paradox, I realize and love is the answer at the end of the day..
    so..
    i love you
    peace
  45. Absotively
    45

    @krib

Yeah, I'm still doing research. I may have to abandon cob. The only reason I'm still holding out hope is because I read something somewhere that said that sod houses on the prairies were warm in the winter, and I figure they're about the same composition (dirt and dead plant matter).

But it may have to be straw bale or something.

    More great shoes

My favourite pair of shoes are the ones that make people make sweeping generalizations and misjudgments about. Just like the colour of my skin. A way to feel superior in comparison.

    @ timedend
Like it or not you're on this ride with all of us here. You're no more informed or better a person than the worse person in the prayer circle.

Don't like the way things are going with the world, rather than beating your chest on the web about how more informed you are, and running down people of the same genus as you, perhaps educate.

Radio3 is a group of people, while focused the odd time on things that are less than "purest" are more times than not, concerned about growing, evolving, and doing better. And not just for themselves.

Course you'd know that if you'd spent any time in a more positive, manner.

Or maybe you're right — we're all ill informed fuel cells for the apocalypse…

Important R3 caveat: R3 listeners are typically smart, well informed and attempt to be socially conscious and responsible. Plus alot of them are huge cynics too! Any number of people here would be more than happy to engage in discussion of world ills; as Absotively pointed out this indeed does happen..I remember a while back a great blog on equal rights for gays happening spontaneously. Things are crazy and shit in the world...and yet here we are, talking as we are. All is not lost...

yeah, I'd love to be able to experiment with it. If you play with the mix you might get something that worked well.
Some of the sod houses I've seen & read about had seriously thick walls (48 inches).

I took a straw bale workshop at Craik last year. Learned a lot about natural plasters and actually built a firepit in my yard using urbanite (leftover concrete) and cob plaster.

When I asked on Wednesday, no one was around who'd checked out the eco-village and such. It's good to hear from someone who's seen it first hand. Were most of the houses there built already last year? Or were a lot of them still under construction? And were they creative/interesting/small, or just regular houses except made of straw and with composting toilets?

I completely understand your frustrations, I am frustrated with the world around us all the time. The thing that is interesting about interacting on the blog is that we get our say, which is good, but it's only through time that we really get to know the people we're talking to.

I applaud your passion and acknowledgment of what is going on in the world, as many turn a blind eye. I try really hard to be aware, but yes, I'm not perfect, and in a way to avoid some things (buying leather, products made in China) I ended up with a pair of Nikes made in Thailand.

My blogs usually begin with some type of story or anecdote, that's just my style. I knew mentioning the brand may promote discussion on ethics and sweatshop production and if that happened, in the end it's another route for us all to know more.

    Dear Bloggers,

    I haven’t been on the R3 blog for too long, and certainly not 24/7. I think this is the first (?) time I’ve seen new, explosive commenters.     Long-time listener, First-time caller;

I guess you sometimes feel shy, Lana, about your profile and avalibillity on-line, so shoes and small things feel safe. They should be, but... I guess this is the first time I've seen controversy in the cbc blogs of a deeper nature. I think people like me need to feel like we are part of the scene of ideas and culture beyond the approving masses of payed up clubbers. Your reply was cool and level, and you spoke well for yourself. The angry activist dude probably feels like anyone who realizes that the culture we have all had a hand in creating is governed by meida stewards who place distance from our focus, the producers of culture we consume and enjoy. I sometimes feel that perhaps the band and the radio/tv/internets guy shoud go off on their own and just stop pretending to interact with us at all. Only because I was a radio host and interviewed authors and rock-stars do I feel that now, as a nobody who loves music, I had better just pay up and be quiet. But it was totally inappropreate of the dude to freak out like that, I understand. I also understand that yours is an entertainment blog, not a political one, so really, what can one expect? Besides, the ailenation of arts and culture lovers from people who make art and people who talk to people who make art is not any one persons' fault. So I suggest calling the guy names and behaving ike a drunk at a bar is more becomming of drunks in bars and not so much public employees who work for a crown corporation. Not that you did anything stupid...
So, as for the topic SHOES,
I LOVE PEARL IZUMI I.Q.'s!!!!!!! WWWWOOOOHHOOOO!!
My grey and white 3M taped pearls took me to basic training at CFB MTL and when I threw them out, they were staind with my blood at the heels and I wore them for 2 years as moccocins, they were that comfortable. I really loved them kiks.
