Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Top 5 Must See Live Gigs w/ The Ghost Is Dancing

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Jul 10, 2009

Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 2PM ET / 11AM PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio:

Today's Guests: Tom Lucier (Phog Phest), The Ghost is Dancing

It's only been a week, but wow have I ever fallen in love with Toronto in the summertime! There seems to be something going on at all times, everywhere.

Earlier this week, we discussed summer roadtrips, and we received a few emails of the disgruntled variety, stating "I can't afford to leave the city this year" (staycation) which brings us to our...

Poll Question Of The Day:

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SUMMER ACTIVITY IN YOUR CITY OR TOWN?

What homebase musical events are you most looking forward to this summer? What makes your city special in the summertime? Or does your city suck in the summer? Does everyone leave town?

With that in mind, here are our Top Five Must-See Events of the weekend!! Here's what we think you absolutely must see and do, across Canada...

Sat July 11 - Phog Phest, Windsor, ON. Celebrate the crowing of the Searchlight #1 Live Music Venue in Canada,  Phog Lounge and see Holy F***, Arkells, Green Go and Yellow Wood play for free. Tune in right here if you can't make it.

July 10 & 11 - Ska Fest , Victoria, BC. Nothing says summer like ska. Celebrating their 10th year, Ska Fest will feature Canadian acts like Los Furios and One Drop and international acts like Mighty Mighty Bosstones  and Voodoo Glowskulls. (thanks to Alison on FB!)

July 10, 11, & 12 - Ottawa Blues Fest, Ottawa, ON. This is one massive festival with acts like KISS but we'd go check out Andrew Vincent , Hey Rosetta!, Jill Barber, Mother Mother, Land of Talk, Valery Gore,  Thunderheist and more.

July 10, 11, & 12 - Winnipeg Folk Fest, Winnipeg, MB.  We need a report! How's the weather for CR Avery, Great Lake Swimmers, Patrick Watson, Gentleman Reg, Iron and Wine, and Neko Case?

Sat July 11 - Hawksley Workman, Calgary, AB. Not only for the price of admission at "Flames Central" will you get the passion of Hawksley but you will also recieve the joyous energy of Regina supergroup Library Voices.

What music are you seeing this weekend? Have we missed anything? Let us know and keep us all in the loop by posting on our blog, emailing feedback@cbcradio3.com or twitter @cbcradio3.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Top 5 Must See Live Gigs w/ The Ghost Is Dancing

I've already seen my must-see weekend show (Hey Rosetta!, Said the Whale, and The Zola's), so I'm going to say that Said the Whale with The Zola's at the Pawn Shop tonight is a MUST SEE show. It's a phenomenal pairing.

My favourite Edmonton summer activity is Taste of Edmonton. Such good food. For Saskatoon it's the Saskatoon Fringe Festival!

You forgot Holy Fuck and Winter Gloves playing a free show in Toronto at Harbourfront tonight, and Broken Social Scene playing a free show at the same place tomorrow. Both are must see!

Favourite summer activity? Sitting around with friends, drinking some beer and taking it eeeeasy. :)

    Summer in Charlottetown

Charlottetown is pretty nice in the summer, all the stores are open (half of the best restaurants/pubs close during the winter). All the tourists are here, so places are busier (not as much fun when you're trying to get into your favorite place and it's full).

Our weather is typically really nice in the summer, not blistering hot like Ontario.

My favorite activity? Sitting on a pub's patio, enjoying the finally nice weather, hopefully listening to some good live music. (2 hours and that's exactly what I'll be doing!)

    also

No need for me to leave Toronto for the summer events, so much happens in this city festival wise and so many bands stop by.. It's already been an awesome summer for music (NxNE being a massive highlight) and is showing no sign of slowing down. Pretty awesome

What Makes Ottawa Special in the Summer?

    Bluesfest!

United Steel Workers of Montreal are playing a free show on the corner of York and Sussex this Saturday at 7 pm.

Land of Talk's taking over the Blacksheep Stage on Sunday in the afternoon ...

Going to be a good weekend!

Could be better. I wish this city was a bit of a cooler summer destination but instead it kind of closes down for the tourists, and not in a good way. I mean I wouldn't come here. They need to do better.

    Pawn Shop in Edmonton

The show alex.werenka mentioned also has two more bands (Needles to Vinyl and Viking Fell).

    AND it's free before 10.

You know, in case it wasn't must-see enough without that.

    Vancouver summer activity...

The best activity in Vancouver during the summer:
    Beach Beach Beach.
    Anytime.
    All the time.
    Day and night.

Others: Saving money up to get to, and convincing friends to come, to Tofino.
The search for a decent patio with reasonably priced alcohol.
Hammock camping: The Hang Out Place on Granville Island is where it is at. (Ben from STW works there when no touring)

Yeah holy crap im jealous of ottawanians because of bluesfest, i was seriously considering taking a big chunk of time off to check out all the awesome bands showing up (i wont even try to list them all, http://www.ottawabluesfest.ca/en/index.php?page=scheduled_performers for the curious ones), but alas, i am short on cash. You better enjoy it for those of us that cant make it! And support the indies :)

The 12 days of Bluesfest by far, even though it is going to be the death of me now that they have added after hours shows...
You should have seen the crowd at the after hours Elliot Brood show last night -there was a mosh pit?!? Ya that's right, a mosh pit to Elliot Brood.

    yeah! Planet Smashers

love this tune. Was there in May (Tofino). Cool Town, although being a prairie boy, I must admit it was a bit unnerving to see all those signs about tsunami hazard areas.

    Ottawa, land of festivals

The Blacksheep stage lineup on Sunday looks fantastic - the Balconies, Sunparlor Players, Jenn Grant, Thunderheist, Mother Mother, Land of Talk - that is just too much goodness in one spot!

Living in a city geared towards tourists can have its benefits, like all the festivals and free events. The downside - the tourists haha.

Also, I just have to say I saw Elliott Brood last night as part of Bluesfest and they were AMAZING. SO GOOD. The crowd was a sweaty, dancing, clapping, cheering frenzy, and it was awesome. And Amanda Putz, I am sorry if I stepped on you in my clapping/dancing frenzy.

    Ness Creek

have to put the plug in this Friday, because next Friday I'll be there...

The Ness Creek music festival starts Thursday. It's a few hours north of Toontown (and west of P.A.) in a big field.

I discovered a few great acts last year, like Wil and the Dana Wylie band, and Library Voices.

This year, Carolyn Mark is playing. I am really looking forward to seeing her.

I agree with Bluesfest, looking forward to seeing all kinds of great bands, including Sunparlour Players on Saturday.

But even here in the little town of Perth, we've got a great festival called the Stewart Park Festival, which is free and outside for 3 days. This year we've got Hey Rosetta playing, but we've also had Apostle of Hustle and Hawksley Workman in years past.

Summer activity and music in my town this summer

Grant, we have been ejoying wakeboarding in Howe Sound close to Anvil Island off the shores of Squamish BC this summer. The seals lining the island shores observe wit h looks of slight confusion on their faces but seem to welcome our presence.

If the water is calm September 19th, we will wakeboard into the SERF (Squamish Equinox Rock Festival) to attend year 3 of our town burgeoning little indi rock festival. www.squamishmusicfestival.com

    Boats

Most cities have some body of water around.

We bought a $30 dinghy at Canadian Tire and float down the Assiniboine river with beers. As my wife always says, "the laws of the land don't apply on the water."

A floatilla makes a great party too.

This weekend, folk fest. It looks like we may need our dinghy there too. In 2007 we used it to get prime seats in front of the mainstage in the middle of the huge pond that formed by day 3.

I was there for the Elliott Brood show. It was as good as their New Year's Eve Show in Toronto to cap last year. I was at the front, in my white hat, going insane.

As I am shot on cash, I'm trying to take in the free shows and the relatively inexpensive ones (Elliott Brood for $10). The only one I'm shelling out the $35 is the all day Sunday show to see Sunparlor Players, Land of Talk, Jenn Grant and after Neko Case, Mother Mother. Oh yeah.

For those in Toronto, enjoy Holy Fuck and Winter Gloves!

It's kind of like curling, if everyone just stood around the rings at one end and tried to push their rocks into the centre.

    Summer in the Horse

I would say some of my favourite things to do at home here in Whitehorse would be some backyard drinks before a walk down to the bar with the midnight sun shining down on you, tinted red by the forest fire smoke. One of those nights where the journey is far better than the destination.

I looked it up on Wikipedia (as much as one can believe what's on Wikipedia). Looks like a great game to play while sitting on the porch and enjoying a beautiful summer evening, which don't exist here...hot, humid, tropically rainy. We'd play it in the winter.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Top 5 Must See Live Gigs w/ The Ghost Is Dancing

My favorite summer activity last year in Edmonton was the Heritage Festival. I had no idea that Edmonton was so diverse. It was amazing to see so many groups showcasing their food, costume, dance, and music.

In summers past, I spent as many Sunday afternoons as I could at the tams in Montreal. After the long winters all I want to do is lay in the sunshine and make up for my Vitamin D deficiency.

    Hillside in Guelph

The best festival in Guelph has to be Hillside. This is the first year that we were able to get full weekend passes because they sell out so fast but it is always a great time. The music is a good mix of big names and lesser known bands but the music selection never disappoints. Add to that great food and an enjoyable atmosphere and you have an amazing summer festival.

    Bluesfest again; Folk festival also

When I started writing this, lazily, nothing had yet been posted on this. Things have changed. Still... <command> + v.

"In Ottawa, the Cisco Bluesfest offers a surfeit of music (folk, rock, blues, gospel, « world » (African I suppose), « indie » big, small and smaller, plus old name acts like (whodathunkit) KISS and Jackson Browne (tonight, actually). It lasts 12 days from this past Wednesday onwards.

In around the 18th or 20th of August, the Ottawa Folkfest occurs. Smaller and thus often offering more intimate performances at the side stages, the big stage’s crowd area IS afflicted with chairs. (Tall chairs one side, short ones t’other. I kid you not.)

Good, varied lineup though. Amelia Curran; Plaskett, Charlotte Cornfield, Amy Millan, James Hill, Kinnie Starr, et cetera. Some more popular and less interesting acts also. Nice site, Britannia Point. http://www.ottawafolk.org/2009/artists.html

Those festivals take care of a certain chunk. If I pine for acts in-between, the Black Sheep Inn is a frequent thing.

That and gardening and other stuff like cycling, is what I mostly do in the summer.

Yes, I was wearing the Panama-style hat. Apologies if any of the arms that hit you were mine.

I've seen Broken Social Scene a few times but never seen Neko Case or Mother Mother live so I decided to pay up to see them as opposed to taking in the free show. I will definitely be at the United Steel Workers of Montreal freebie on Saturday night though. If you two are attending either, look for a guy wearing a similar hat/fedora. That'll be me. I'll keep my eye out for someone in a CBC Radio 3 t-shirt.

    @MarkInTampa

Depends what you’re going to Caribana for, and what you’re interested in. Like the parade is good if you like scantily clad women in bright colours, but the after parties are usually quite good. But I mean, I like to dance and dance hall music, so I might be biased. Also it's thy type of thing which gets better with more friends and drinks.

Though festivals are always good, my favourite activity in the summer by far is lying on the grass spread-eagle basking in the sun, much like a groundhog…
  44. Crozon Ottawa
    44

    @nsgal

Definitely worth it - The Stills, Okkervil River, Sam Roberts, Jackson Browne… and then Wintersleep @ the Capital Music Hall - I bit the bullet and bought the full festival pass.
  45. kks
    45

    @MarkInTampa

Another mixed review here. Caribana lasts so damn long (june 6 to aug 7) that it doesnt even really count.. the events are so spread out time wise and some are kinda weak. The big events are generally pretty good (some crazy performances around city hall, a really good all day music lineup at the sound academy last year) but because the festival is so spread out there isnt really a 'big weekend' of stuff to do constantly like many other festivals would. Probably wouldnt be something to come to the city specifically for, but if youre around and catch some event its pretty entertaining.

    How can you forget Montreal?

Living here means walking around town and constantly stumbling upon streets blocked by some kind of outdoor festival. The best part (for a poor grad student especially) is that a lot of it is FREE! From random Bluegrass at Fringe Festival and Stevie Wonder in the rain at Jazz Fest, to something as simple as Tam Tams at Mont Royal park.

The definite highlight for me thus far was Jill Barber last night at the Apple Store playing to myself and about 25-30 other people.

My biggest problem is fitting this smorgasbord of free music into my busy grad school schedule...

We just happened to be there at the same time as Caribana (our nearly-annual trip to Toronto). Peronally, I loved the music (my partner and the friends with us...not so much).

But we noticed that many restaurants and shops closed up for the duration of the festival. At our hotel (the Delta Chelsea), they took all the furniture and potted plants out of the lobby and hallways, and issued us wrist bands to get in and out. The hotel was crawling with Toronto's finest.
  50. MarkInTampa
    50

summer in guelph vs toronto (both great)

Summer in Toronto: getting dinner from Chippy's fish & chips or Fresh and lying around in Trinity Bellwoods Park: watching the notable local literati/rock stars/acrobats wander by and flag down friends.

Summer mornings: meet up for coffee at Clafouti (across from the park) and eat fresh-baked still warm croissants, and listen to the symphony of passing bicycle bells, as the summer dresses flutter by.

Summer in Guelph: retrieve my hidden canoe from the banks of the river, and canoe lazily up and down the Speed River. Stop for ice cream at the Boathouse. Ride bikes up along the Eramosa river to the woods, or towards Starkey's hill, or Eden Mills, and explore for a while. Go for hike. Get ambitious and continue on to Ryan Carley's family's farm! His mom is awesome.

The one major event I'm looking forward to is the River & Sky Music Festival in River Valley Ontario (Near Sudbury). @MarkInTampa

Yea, sometimes Toronto can get kind of rowdy during Caribana, but it’s all part of the fun, no? I’m guessing you’re coming the last/first weekend of july/august? The restaurants around the area are closed – but if you head up north I’m pretty sure they’re open. If you only go to Toronto once a year, check out the AGO (if you like art) they renovated it and the curation is quite good.

@kks caribana officially lasts forever, but I would say that the parade is usually the big weekend I think the king and queen show is generally around the same time (though I’ve never been to the show)

    Edmonton in the summer

Probably the best thing to do is one of the festivals, but I have no idea which one. Someone decided that Edmonton should be "the city of festivals," and now we have a festival basically every weekend for about three months. They're all great, but it's way too easy to get burnt out on the whole thing.

One cool non-festival thing is the downtown farmer's market, though I don't get there very often because the other (year-round, indoor) farmer's market is walking distance from my house and I'm lazy.

Have a disease free summer in Brandon, and lie down

One of the biggest highlights in Brandon for the summer is the Brandon Folk Festival, which happens every year, a few weeks after the Winnipeg Folk Fest.

Either than that, the whole city is just as boring in summer as it is the rest of the year. People go to Oak Lake, Riding Mountain and Spruce Woods for camping, and half the city leaves for four days a year for Countryfest in Dauphin, Manitoba.

Brandon is a boring sleepy town

    @Grant re: Bumping into people

I went back to Toronto (where i lived for 5 years) for a week in May...and between osssington and dundas on Queen St. I ran into 3 friends on my first day there...everyone is always out doing things in Toronto. You will always find people you know!

    Re: Vancouver.
The only place this happens is at the beach. I was there on a Monday at 2pm and a guy I knew set up on the other side of the log beside us. And as you know, the beaches are huge...so it's quite impressive.

I think Vancouver's problem is two-fold in that everyone has parties at their houses... you see people at venues for show and stuff, but there aren't many people just walking around going places.
It's size is its problem...It's bike, bus, or cab... Vancouver is amazing but everything is so spread out. Downtown, Cambie, Main, Commercial, Kits...
Toronto has just as much social and cultural division, and unique areas but it's smushed together into this beautiful, epic, WALKABLE, wonderful city.

If only there was a combo of Toronto and Vancouver...I wouldn't have to fly between the two!

    Edmonton is not Deadmonton!

Edmonton in the summer is great!
There are a million things to do for free. There is a different festival in Churchill Square every week of the summer.
The river valley fills with couples picnicing on blankets, kids playing catch, spontaneous bocce competitions, bbq's, and bonfires.

There are camp fire parties in backyards everywhere. The saturday outdoor farmer's market is bustling with friends old and new.

The nights are cool, the days are warm and sunny. The air is clean, clear, and always fresh.

I'm looking forward to the 30th Anniversary of the Edmonton Folk Fest this year and reuniting with old FolkFest friends.
I'm also excited for my garden with is florishing in all the rain we've had. I can't wait to take a week off of work just to stay at home and lounge in the backyard.

    Summer is awesome.

    Flames Central

It is kind of a neat venue it used to be a old theater that they converted into a bar/restaurant/sports bar it is all decked out in flames decor. there is even a huge flames log on the roof. It is a good venue for concerts just a little weird with the flames logo everywhere. It is also on Stephen Avenue which is in the heart of downtown so it isn't on the Red Mile which is 17th Ave.

I don't know of any concerts anytime soon, Brandon is not the place to be to see a show, but a pub called Lady of the Lake usually has local live entertainment every other night or so. On the 21st there's a band called The Kettle Black performing there

Lady of the Lake's calendar (should be updated around August 1): http://www.ladyofthelake.ca/calendar.htm

Just on a note on Flames Central it would probably be the coolest concert venue in the city if they would get ride of all the Flames crap. It is a really nice establishment with good food and such just has a case of Flames logo overload.

Wow, where are you driving from? If there's no live entertainment going on at Lady of the Lake, you can always check out one of the town's pubs, I recommend Clancy's, just ask someone from Brandon where it is, its fairly easy to find, and have a pint of "Half Pints" beer, it's always a tasty brew to have with friends!

I'd freak out if I ran into people at the beach in Vancouver! What if I'm in a state of undress?!?

From good old Calgary. It takes a bit longer when you have to drive the speed limit Jeep TJ's aren't known for aerodynamics or speed. I will also have to stop in Regina for a bit which adds time to the trip. We made the trip in just under 14hrs in the spring.

ouch, one of my friends had to do the exact trip as you last week (and back two days later), that's not fun, remember to make timmies stops every so often, and hopefully you don't lose your sanity in the short amount of time in the wheat city!

it was actually really awkward because we were in that zen-out-in-the-sun-in-our-own-little-world mode...
when you really don't want to have to talk to someone?

good thing the logs are there to separate you from others. you can hide your state of undress behind them too.

    THE STILLS

The Stills opening up for Paul McCartney was one of the BEST opening acts ever, they got very little attention last year when they played, yet Joel has

but it was an amazing time, Paul's amazing live too!
