Tomorrow is our national day:
Canada Day! I live in Ottawa, which is Party Central. Honestly, every city and town does it up but you haven't
felt red and white in your heart until you've spent July 1st in Ottawa. I've been busy all month getting together the annual
Sing For Your Song special with
Grant Lawrence. You can hear that on
Radio One at 4 pm locally.
However, this past week was all about getting the details finalized for
a live broadcast at noon at Major's Hill Park here in Ottawa tomorrow. Come down if you're in town, but if you're not you can
tune in at noon or 1:00 in Atlantic Canada on Radio One. It's a song circle of epic proportions featuring
Julie Doiron,
Justin Rutledge,
Maybe Smith, and the band you're about to hear,
The Sojourners.
They should be legendary already. Listen to these
harmonies. Absorb the
uplifting lyrics. Feel their smiles and
their joy at getting to make music for a living. They are
three American expats who relocated to Vancouver at various times and found each other through singing. They've only been a trio since 2007 and released their debut album that same year. Ok, maybe
two years is a little quick to become legends, but I think this trio are well on their way.
I've already packed my Kleenex for the show July 1st because after our song circle is done and we're off-air there is
going to be a Citizenship Ceremony for new Canadians. The Sojourners have some pretty intense stories about why they
came to Canada from America to flee segregation and a country divided by Vietnam. Now that they have finally just become Canadian citizens they're going to
be leading the singing of O Canada. Now you know why I'll need Kleenex!
It was hard to pick just one song from their amazing repertoire but I've picked their arrangement of this traditional. Here is Vancouver's
The Sojourners with
Run On.
