Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Crystal Castles and the Canadian Music Backlash?

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Jun 23, 2009

Coming up today on Grant Lawrence Live, 2PM ET / 11AM PT on CBC Radio 3's web radio/Sirius 86:

Today's Guests: Peter Elkas, Gentleman Reg

Well, yesterday sure was a strange one. First there was the bizarre post-MMVA scrap between Joel Plaskett-superfan Perez Hilton and the Black Eyed Peas, and then we learned of Toronto duo Crystal Castles' latest adventures in Spain.

That Crystal Castles incident prompted a very unexpected anti-Canadian music uprising on New York music blog Brooklyn Vegan. Some of the comments are downright shocking...

:: "Canada. Mediocre talent with the biggest egos".

:: "Canadian art and scene... equally embarrassing".

:: "More talent comes out of the New Jersey swampland than the whole of Canada".

:: "The Canadian indie rock industry glorifies shitty bands and creates big headed people".

Bands initially singled out were Crystal Castles, Broken Social Scene, and the Arcade Fire. This brings us to our...

Poll Question of the Day:

DO CANADIAN MUSICIANS HAVE UNCONTROLLABLE EGOS?

Yes or no? Are there Canadian musicians giving Canada a bad name? Is the Canadian music renaissance-honeymoon over? Or are they finally just paying attention and really jealous? Does the Canadian music media over-hype certain artists?

Let us know by posting your comments to our blog or emailing feedback@cbcradio3.com. You can also Twitter us @cbcradio3.

I wouldn't try and convince you the whole Crystal Castles charade is anything but tired, over, and played out, but I will tell you you that the absolute last place I would look for social, or pop culture icon ettiquette lessons would be the state of New York.

I am sorry, its more than ironic that site dedicated to the high plains of hipster ethos, is shelling out scoffing and indignant remarks about the Canadian arts scene.

The whole things smells of jealousy.

Do Canadians have big egos? Of course we make better stuff than you. So suck it.

    Haha fair call tb3.

I agree the Crystal Castles bit is getting tired, but the rest of the comments are pretty flagrant and unfounded.

As far as I'm concerned the only Canadian musicans giving Canada a bad name are Nickelback and Celine Dion.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Crystal Castles and the Canadian Music Backlash?

    No.

Do some big Canadian acts have big egos? Sure. Rightly so though. BSS, Arcade Fire, the Dears are all insanely good at what they do. And their egos have been fed and fed and fed by (American) indie music media. And now they're complaining that their egos are too big? F-off.

Anyone who has met Sam Roberts would back me that he negates any and all hipster egotists in the Canadian music scene. He is gracious, humble and approachable to a fault.

    Also...

all of the Canadian indie bands that I've encountered have been very approachable and happy to talk before or after a show. Many, if not most, make themselves available at the merch table to sign autographs, shake hands and chat. So even if some have large egos, I would say that this is the exception, not the rule.

Sure, of course there is a high number of snobs within Canadian indie music circles, but isn't that the case everywhere? I'm pretty sure we aren't alone in that exclusive club.

    Canadians have big heads?

I'll put it like this: as an american I am listening to canadian music. I listen to CBC Radio 3 because you guys put up a lot of good music and a variety of it. I turn on a radio station here in USA and I hear one hour of music played over and over again and it doesn't take long for me to get sick of it.

Just keep doing what you are doing!

    Maybe. People have egos.

    Oh come on

If I was a ridiculously talented Canadian musician, I'd probably have a big head too. However, I've met a lot of Canadian artists who are rockin' it, and every one of 'em has been super nice and sincere ... or maybe it's all a ploy ;-)

Besides, isn't it the American masses that made Nickelback a household name? Boo-urns.

Re : Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Crystal Castles and the Canadian Music Backlash?

Every time I've met an indie artist in Canada, at a merch table for instance, I've been astounded by just how friendly and humble they are.

I'm sure there must be a few egos out there, but I haven't come across one yet. I think they really appreciate their fans and show it.

And Niko88, I don't even turn on the radio here in the USA anymore.

I have found the exact same thing. From Joel Plaskett to Chris Murphy, from Sam Roberts to Ryan Gildemond, all were friendly and truly appreciative that I came to see them and that I knew about them to begin with.

Not totally sure about A.C. Newman, but Shane Nelken who was in his band was thrilled I knew who he was!

    Are bloggers the egomaniacs?

Okay I am going to say this and maybe some of you might not like it but just remember I am a regular commentator on this blog so this applies to me to.

I actually think sometimes the people that have the giant egos are not artists but those who comment on them in blogs. Now I'm not saying any of you are though, in fact this perhaps one of the few level headed blogs on the net, but lets face when people are given a chance to say anything they want without really having to reveal their true selves and having to face real consequences out there its just asking for really nasty and egotistical comments. I'm just saying that with every comment that was made I can almost hear their egos expanding.

Don't get pissed at me. I don't put myself above anyone. We all look for validation one way or another :)

    Could be worse

Atleast we don't see our indie artists regularly in the news for punching COPS! I saw Stone Temple Pilots perform in Quebec City (for like 10 minutes, then went to a better Great Big Sea concert). Stone Temple Pilots' lead singer is renown for being such an a-hole. While on stage, he was drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels in a paper bag and slurring while singing. And earlier that day he was arrested in Quebec City for hitting a police officer.

On a better note, it's St Jean Baptiste Day in Quebec and French Canada, one of the biggest party days of the year. Bonne fete Saint Jean Baptiste tout le monde! I saw Les Trois Accords and Pepe et sa guitare for last year's St Jean Baptiste day in Quebec, it was an amazing time, everyone was so friendly (minus the moshers who trampled me)

A bit disappointed in hearing about Crystal Castles incident....

But just glancing at the blog, there is no way the blog shows anything valid. Other than maybe a few songs they may have heard, I doubt if any of the commenter's gave a open listen to any Canadian indie music.

If you don't like a band/artist/country... don't waste time slamming things you don't care about. If someone took time to listen to an artist or song and then formed an opinion, that's what is supposed to happen. But, no one should be interested in hearing what someone has to say unless it is constructive and/or informative... I don't see how saying Canadian's have ego's means anything.

Nah, our musicians egos are a lot more controlled

I don't know if there much else to say that hasn't already been said. It just reeks of jealousy or the typical, "I can site one or two examples, it applies to everyone and everything!"

Let them whine, in general Canadian musicians have much more controlled egos than American ones. Of course some people let it go to their head, that's just human. Media is made to fuel this, the hype machine can really pump someone's ego.

I agree with MikeV though, since blogs don't have much accountability they can inflate the ego too. I do find it funny that when I look at the comments on Brooklyn Vegan they're almost all "anonymous", no one even has the grapes for a user name.

Well i don't really see what the MMVA scrap has to do with Canadian talent or egos. Seems to me it involved big-headed Americans and merely happened on our soil.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Crystal Castles and the Canadian Music Backlash?

My observation from many online forums, blogs, and even face to face conversations with americans, is that many (not all) tend to be uneducated about anything outside their own borders and have extreemly biased opinions. They enjoy making blanket statements without base, and fail to notice their own arrogance and large egos.

I pity them for missing out on some of the really great music Canada has to offer. As for the accusations about our egos, I think a great deal of confidence is needed to be able to survive in such an industry, I don't disagree that some people take it too far, but definitely not all canadians are that way. It's the same in the US too.

    A Very F'ing Long Answer

    Good Topic!

The answer is obviously yes and no.

First of all to say Canadian musicians have big egos crap - does no one remember the day before yesterday when the MMVA's were turned into the Perez Hilton / Black Eyed Peas show? Or a few weeks ago when some crappy American rapper cancelled a St. Johns Newfoundland show - actually turned around at the airport and went home because he wasn't getting 40 thousand dollars for a show?

Fortunately no one (at least in Canada) gives a crap about the celebrity stuff much anymore: According to Inside the CBC nearly twice as many people watched a rerun of Happy Gilmore on CBC as watched the MMVA's

    http://www.insidethecbc.com/happy-gilmore-outdraws-mmvas

So hopefully there won't be too many more topics like this one.

With Crystal Castles in particular, people just need to stop booking them but I have a feeling at this point that people book them and go to their shows BECAUSE of the potential train wreck.

As for the Brooklyn Vegan comments - Americans accusing ANYONE of having big egos is like China accusing other countries of having poor human rights records. Most Americans don't know the rest of the world exists. According to the best estimates I can find 25% or less of Americans own passports and fewer than that ever travel abroad

    http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2003/01/31/how_many_america.php

That said I think that our reaction to musicians and other artists is misplaced. Many of them are uncomfortable with the pedestal and while I greatly admire people who make great art and great music:

Kevin Drew, Amy Millan and Emily Haines all graduated together from Etobicoe School of the Arts. Does anyone know the names of their music teachers there? Does anyone ask for their autographs? Does anyone know the names of the people who decided that Canadian schools needed strong music programs? I don't but I'm convinced that those are the people responsible for Canada's current music scene.

How about Chad Van Gaalen and Julie Doirons parents? No interviews or magazine covers for them? How about the medical people who leave their warm beds in the middle of the night to save people's lives? (Musicians or not). How about the people who immigrate to Canada and work two jobs so their kids can go to university here?

All cynicism aside, we live in a world of heroes big and small and most of them go completely unrecognized. So yeah, I love and respect artists, musicians and creative types and they need to be told that they are doing a good job on a fairly regular basis - taking the stage really puts your self esteem on the line and positive reactions, praise and applause are pretty mandatory if someone is going to keep doing it. But to put them on a special pedestal above the rest of society seems somehow inappropriate to me.

Okay who here on this message board hasn't had a beer with a Canadian indie artist after a concert. Or gone up and talked to them after about there music and other people's music. I haven't found any of them to be anything but approachable. As for Crystal Castles I think they play it up as part of there image. The Calgary show went off really well and it was a very good show.

I'm going to say this about that...

Last year I saw Metric at Capital Ex in Edmonton. Afterwards the band signed some autographs. when I got up there first of all Jimmy shaw asked for my number (joking around of course) and Emily complemented me on my scarf and asked me where i got it. i told her the truth (Sally Anne) and she was like "that's the best place to find cool stuff". I don't know.. that doesn't sound like a snobby band to me.

I have to disagree with your points.
Nas is a hip hop legend. And he left the show because he wasn't getting paid. I can't fault him for that, if my boss reneged on half my paycheque, I wouldn't show up for work the next day either.

Sadly, I have to disagree that no one in Canada gives a crap about celeb gossip: unfortunately the Perez/BEP story was the most read on TheStar.com over the Toronto strike, Iran protests, or court procedings on the Toronto 18. Today's most read story is about Jon and Kate Plus Eight.

As for the Toronto Star - don't confuse it with Canada

The Toronto Star's website is the 5,529th most popular website amoung Canadians it is oddly more popular in many Asian countries than it is in Canada

CBC.ca is the 30th most popular website amoung Canadians

Personally I don't follow the hype - so could care less how people act when I am not around them. Of the artists that I have met personally, whether after or before their show or standing right beside me as part of the audience, they have all been really great down to earth people. I spent a couple of hours travelling around to different shows with The Details at NxNE on Friday and those guys are nothing shy of awesome. If they had egos about being in a Canadian Indie band I never noticed it.

Re: Live on CBC Radio 3 from Toronto: Crystal Castles and the Canadian Music Backlash?

well as a performer check-in volunteer at Hillside... i've seen some egos with Canadian muscians, and their tour managers! I had a tour manager freak out on me once even though I didn't do anything wrong!

But here's a little situation which I found kinda funny which happened to my friend while volunteering. The front man of a small small indie band requested they have their own dressing room, even though bigger bands didn't have their own. So since it was locked with a key that the volunteers were handling, he had to ask my friend to open it. But he didn't just ask, he just had to add, "well I know you probably find it really cool when bands ask you to do things for them, so I'm going to get you to open my dressing room".

Let's just say she didn't find it cool at all, just kinda obnoxious! I think it was the way he said it. Not really cool.

As someone from the New Jersey swamplands, I am offended!

But seriously, all of the Canadian artists I've met or heard on the radio are a lot more down to earth than the NYC buzz bands. I think the Canadian media has to hype bands - if they don't who will? I imagine that it's hard to cross the border and get the attention that Canadian bands deserve.

Hey, your mom should write to Pedro. Crushes are the R3-30 theme this week.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree (on Nas' skills and business obligations and on Canadians' interest in celeb gossip compared to municipal news)

Grey cup ring is probably the sweetest song of all time, why don't we play it more?!

my girlfriend did a cover of it, sent it in to him, and he wrote a nice letter back with an autographed cd (which is really flippin good, I encourage anyone to buy it!!)

...actually it wasn't a true cover as she changed around the words to "my riders have a grey cup ring" circa 07. Very awesome, brings tears to my eyes.... mostly because we never win.
