Today on Lanarama: Foodie Friday! A LIVE MEAT DRAW! With Meatdraw!

Posted by Lana Gay on May 01, 2009

I don't know how it started, but does anyone know how bacon became such a big reference on the Lanarama blog posts? It is the thing I miss most about being a meat eater, and holding bacon in my hand today reminded me that it really is the gateway meat.

Today on Foodie Friday, we're celebrating the ancient tradition of raffling meat! Victoria band Meatdraw are here, we will be holding our own R3 Meat Draw - up for grabs some handsome, salty meats!

And don't worry, you can win too, wherever you are! Meatdraw will pick your prize.  In order for you to be in the draw, you must comment/ email or tweet your meat (favourite)

SO, WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MEAT? HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A MEAT DRAW? If you have, what was the hipster to veteran ratio?

Post your comments on the blog or email feedback@cbcradio3.com

Coincidentally one of Canada's largest meat draws is going on simultaneously at Legion #298 and we will be checking in to the front lines of the flesh. Bloody fun!  It just also happens to be the place where Lily Fawn smooched a prime rib!

I'm at the farm right now in oil country, Manitoba, and every friday they have a meat draw in town at the legion. I'm not going to this week's meat draw, mainly because I have steak thawing, and I'm slowly getting over a bad birthday cold.

Meat is good! Support your local beef farmers, people like my dad make a living off raising cattle all year round. It's not a fun job but someone has to do it!

Oh, and unlike what Grant just said on his show, I'm not "across the street from a ranch", I'm at a farm, I can see cows right out my window, white ones, brown ones, moo!

3 Second bacon. Not quite food, not quite plastic: delicious nonetheless.

    Meat, Meat, Glorious Meat!

    Favourite meat: BACON!

... Okay, I had to do that but in all honesty, pork is my favourite meat. It makes all my favourite foods like bacon, salami, sausages, tonkatsu, tonkotsu ramen, mao po tofu, etc..

Pigs are the tastiest animal by far, most versatile in their uses and well, they make bacon. What's not to love?

I have to miss most of the show due to meetings, but I sure hope I win the meat draw! By the way, how much are tickets for Meatdraw's show tonight? Are they still available?

    @Alex

Homer: Wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute. Lisa honey, are you
saying you're *never* going to eat any animal again? What about
    bacon?
    Lisa: No.
    Homer: Ham?
    Lisa: No.
    Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad! Those all come from the same animal!
Homer: [Chuckles] Yeah, right Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

...but seriously, I like bison. I was actually talking to someone today about how tasty it is.

    and here it is.

I knew i had a photo around here. This is a poutine i ate on canada day at elgin street diner in ottawa. It was an epic serving of montréal smoked beef on poutine.

    Bacon!

I love that Grant just said "coming up we're going to be giving you some meat"

I have never been to a meat draw, but I think I would if I knew of one (and if I had a deep freeze).
My favorite meat is probably bacon (what's not to love?), followed by the walleye that we catch from the lake in the summer and throw in the pan literally minutes later with butter and lemon juice, mmmm. Wait, are we considering fish meat on this blog? It seems to be very pork-and-beef oriented; in that case, yay ham!

    PICTURE OF MEAT!!!

I'm not going to the local meat draw tonight, mainly because I have meat ready, as I said above, but now it's hailing.. that kind of ruins my desire to bbq!!! So here's a picture of meat, since my parents have a beef farm. We make our own meat. Here's a freezer with meat.. however it's nearly the time in the year to do the traditional butcher fest, but we also have 4 other freezers with meat.. mmmm! All of this is meat from our own farm:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3632/3492640442_852980fd08_b.jpg

@Lana: Hipster to Veteran ratio.. no hipsters what-so-ever here.. thank goodness. At the local meat draw its full of farmers, people in their 20s who want to drink and win meat (mostly farm kids), and a few veterans.

    Favvorite Meat

Sirloin I think? I usually get my meat intake in burger or pepperoni form so I really have no idea what it is. They claim my favorite burger at Outback Steakhouse is made from Filet, and it's a pretty good burger. But I go Sirloin when I order steak.

A meat draw sounds like weird fun, but you don't have to include me in this one. I don't think my mailbox is big enough for meat.

    19

    mmm meat

I'm a huge fan of a nice T-Bone steak, but my overall vote has to go to bacon as my favourite. You can have it with breakfast, lunch, dinner or whenever! Hell you can even have it in salad! So versatile..
Bacon seems to have taken off over the past couple years in mainstream popularity, but I think we know that it has gone to far when the all powerful 'market' produces a product called 'baconaisse'...at least it provides some good joke fodder for Daily Show and Colbert Report

    Moose! Moose! Moose!

Ain't nothing better than a good slow cooked moose roast. MMMMMM!
Although one of my favourite flesh eating memories involves a large arctic char that Marek from Meatdraw and I were given while playing up in Yellowknife. When we got the fish home and defrosted it we realized neither of us knew how to clean a fish!
That's when we also realized we weren't the backwoodsy frontier men we thought of ourselves as.
We called up Marek's dad and he talked us through it like it was some episode of M*A*S*H* where an unqualified person performs a complicated operation with a jack knife and a pen.
    Good times!
And that fish was fantastic once we got it on the BBQ!

Can't get any more Canadian than that!

I've been involved with alot of events where either the meat is butchered (beef, chicken, pork), or where we kill/plug the meat (chickens), so I'm surprised I still eat meat, the smell of burning chicken feathers is not a nice smell what-so-ever. But I'm very picky when it comes towards meat. There's alot of things I won't eat, I don't eat most pork, minus bacon, and maybe sometimes ribs. Beef I only eat steak and burgers for some reason (I dislike the taste of Roast Beef)

    LOL

I am constantly learning new things about Canadians, evidently a nation of bacon lovers, on the R3. Never heard of a meat draw.

I'm partial to a good stuffed pork tenderloin, myself.

I attended a Slow Food dinner at the Eagle Tavern (Greenfield Village) and had something few people enjoy (at least here in the States): fresh ham from a pig killed the night before. The chef actually stopped by the table to tell us what a beautiful animal it was. More information than most people at the table wanted to know, but that is the point of Slow Food (www.slowfood.org).

We could work on it. We could add a bottle of Keith’s, and a shot of Screech. Perhaps a few Ganong chocolates for desert as well. A fresh Leamington tomato salad alongside might be nice as well, along with a PEI spud. If we add a BC smoked salmon appetizer, and used Alberta beef smoked Montreal style, then I think we’ve got it about covered ... except for the north.

    Meat

The best meat I’ve ever had was bison tenderloin in Alberta.

Speaking of meat, meating somebody is awesome. Basically if somebody is passed out at your house, fill their pockets with sandwich meats. It's hilarious the next morning when they're doing the walk of shame and go to reach for their keys, or money to pay the cabbie etc.

Venison is another big thing in my family. Tastes like chicken

I find this "tastes like chicken" weird. I find that it's usually because when a meat has a similar texture people say it "tastes" like chicken because a lot of people don't think of texture as a side of what they like/dislike about food. Plus, chicken is often a bland bland meat so other bland meats "taste" like it. Sorry to go on a rant, but the generic "tastes like chicken" description bugs me a little, not to say there aren't many things with a similar taste and texture as chicken meat. although, I go the other route
Q: "What's that alligator taste like?"
A: "Taste like alligator, pretty good"
  91. Silvorgold
    91

    @AlexofAnders

I guess it helps that I'm from rural Manitoba, it's expensive to buy meat at the local grocery stores. A bottle of soda is usually $3 for a 2L bottle! You can only just imagine how expensive it goes up from there.

My family is fiercely proud about meat, I talked to an old man who used to be my grandpa's neighbour, he said that my family knows how to treat their cattle, supposedly my grandparents had some of the best cows in the area!

Can I still enter the meatdraw?

    Balut anyone?

*ahem* it wasn't me but I know someone here has eaten something called balut. I'm surprised he hasn't brought it up yet though :P

Oh, has anyone had goose? I keep trying to convince my parents to try a Christmas goose one year.

I've had moose stew before. I was really little and it must not have been good because I don't recall ever having it again.

My old man used to shoot geese and if he was cruel enough to feed me moose I wouldn't put it past him to slip in a goose to a stew.....

    Tofurky!

my favourite meat, and i know i speak for Grant, too, is tofurky. It's perfectly formed inside a factory, just like meat, and tastes great with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce - JUST LIKE MEAT!

If i win the meat draw, please give the meat to a worthy charity in Vancouver, like VANOC.

    Free the Meat!

    @ Lana

Thanks! I tried calling, no answer. I'm gonna leave work soon enough so maybe I'll just drop by there and ask. Usually I don't worry too much about the price but my concert dollars are starting to get stretched thin

Thank you Omnivores! Herbivores! Carnivores! And you pesky Vegans!

It was a very fun show! We'll if the FB protest group will try and stop us next time!
