TCNH: Water Cooler Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Posted by Craig Norris on May 27, 2009

Listeners will immediately notice by my less-than-healthy voice that I am indeed not a well bear today. While I am not 100%, I am still in the 75 - 90 range. But I guess you'll be the judge of that.

It is Water Cooler Wednesday on The Craig Norris Hour and the blog is your oyster, folks! Treat my show as your own, personal, private, internationally accessible water cooler. I'll throw out a couple of conversation starters:

 :: Governor General Michaelle Jean must be very, very hungry

 :: Hamilton's venerable Pepper Jack Cafe has one..final..show

But don't feel restricted to those topics! Feel free to comment away on any old thing that crosses your mind today! I'll also announce who tomorrow's Listener Co-Host will be!

What's on your mind, world?

    Re Michaelle Jean

    Very very hungry? Why? That's just what people eat at big celebrations there. What's the big deal? It's just polite.

    Gov. General

    Honestly, I'm glad that she ate it. Showed respect for the way of life up there. The more diverse this country is, the better.

    this doesn't mean I support clubbing baby seals, but I do definitely stand behind the Inuit on the issue, and they should have the final say.

    Honestly I think they don't have a clue what they want to do. It has grown so fast and frankly it looks to be on the verge of collapse.

    Twitter

    will lose almost all users if they demand pay. Their services are not specialized and in demand enough. The most popular job search sites? Free. The most popular classified ads? Free. It won't be any different with social networking, which of course, depend on people's participation.

    @Dr. Ock

    That was exactly what I thought!

    It gets even better if you read the story: she gutted the seal herself.

    The GG

    I agree with binsy, eating seal at a celebration in the North is pretty commonplace, but it still makes Michaelle Jean even more awesome in my books.

    I can live without Twitter. But on iPhone most Twitter apps that exist cost money already

    What's on my mind.. I have family (grad) pictures tonight.. I'm not looking forward to that, I hate family pictures

    I remember the morning I read in the papers that MPs unanimously voted to include seal pelt on the Olympic uniform. That's not as badass... but still pretty funny.

    If Twitter charges…

    I will tap out. Its okay as a free, even ad supported outlet, but if I have to pay, I am fine with using Facebook only.

    Not sure what they think they're going to gain from charging, aside from a mass exodus to some other free things.

    Re: TCNH: Water Cooler Wednesday, May 27, 2009

    The comment that social networking sites are free is true if you think of them as "pay-for-content".

    But, the sites are profiting from the networks you keep and the information you choose to share. Don't be fooled, they compile and share/sell your usage stats... be it for direct ads, or for product research. These sites are just 'fun' market research surveys.

    In the end, everyone's trying to sell you something.

    Fuck, I'm cynical lately.

    Twitter & sales???

    My beef re Twitter is that my workplace is using it as a business tool... if you looked at our home page, you practically can't tell what we sell anymore... it's loaded with media tools such as twitter, slideshare, and blogs. Social media has it's place, but i would like to see if there are stats re relation to product sales. frankly i don't think a business having a twitter account will keep our doors open.

    I didn't read the article but I really hope twitter isn't kidding itself that people will pay for the service. It sounds like they realize they need to be creative with it but it's so big that I think they need some revenue coming in to keep things afloat.

    Pepper Jack's Closing Weekend

    It's really going to be a sad weekend for music in the Hammer. Pepper Jack's is a great venue for both musicians and music fans alike, and Doug the soundman is one of the best anywhere.

    Our hopes is that it will be snapped up by a music lover who will respect it's past and have big visions for it's future.

    Anyone who is in the area should try and make it out to either of the great shows this weekend. Let's show our support for what has been a great spot for live music in Hamilton. Thanks for many memorable nights.

    @binsy

    dont see terminator, the plot is weak, christian bale really doesnt bring it, and the action scenes are really overdone..

    angels & demons was pretty interesting if you into that thing, but i'd say the first one was better

    xmen wasnt that great.. his character didnt seem as badass as he shouldve been.. the fight scenes werent that well choreographed.. it really seemed like a money grab more than any sort of attempt at making a good movie (action or otherwise)

    if its still out i'd recommend Coraline (in 3D or not) if you liked nightmare before christmas. tim burton did both and i really enjoyed it.

    i didnt see fighting, but friends have said if you go in with low expectations, youll be very well rewarded, but if you go in with high expectations you should probably walk out into another movie

    and dare i say it... ive never watched the star trek series, but the movie was very well done. if you even remotely like science fictiony movies, see it, no need to know anything about star trek (although im told that if you do, they make a looot of references)

    umm.. thats my 2cents :p

    In the interest of full disclosure…

    The linkage for Awkward Family Photos came to me via CBC Radio3's very own Mark MacArthur. I spent a good hour, at it the second he tweeted the link, going all the way back to post #1, and laughing my ass off.

    Why does every guy on the internet with that forlorn, 'woe is me' look chose Eeyore as their idol… But that one dude in there, immortalized himself and his Furries family for all to see.

    The Star Trek movie was really good and I watched the series when I was little so I'm a long time fan but no Trekker.

    Wolverine was terrible! Half of it didn't even match up with the other films and the special effects, pfff. Ryan Reynolds was the best part. See it if you just wanna have fun I guess.

    but i probably will end up seeing it, just because its pixar and theyve never disappointed, and recently ive been enjoying animated movies (Bolt was awesome!)

    for those who havent seen the new 3d movies, yes, it is awesome, and is worth it (especially in imax). this aint your granny's 3d. especially Coraline, it was usually subtle but it really added an extra depth (hah) to the movie to make it much more immersive.. and some scenes were brilliantly balanced with colour, 3d and animation effects

    Earplugs question

    Bit of a weird question, but I remember someone saying on the blog that they wear earplugs at shows.

    I bought a pair of those fancy-pants music-listening earplugs, but I find them really hard to get in. Is this normal? Do I just need practice? Or does this indicate that I have small ear canals or something?

    You do the yawn and pull up on the top of your earlobe with the opposite hand thing while putting them in? That's what I do and it took some practice but it still takes a couple of tries sometimes.
  67. kn0ttyn3rb
    67

    @Absotively

    My earplugs are your everyday shooting range ones. They work quite well... but even the best earplugs don't block out shrill screaming of nearby fans. :(
    what's the difference of fancy music listening plugs?

    70

    @Absotively

    i have these that i use at shows: http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx and they have them in two sizes.. so yeah if yours are really uncomfortable they easily could be too big. i usually rub them between my fingers for a bit to get the plasticy stuff warmed up and flattened a bit then twist em in. also i noticed i have to angle them upwards much more on my left ear than my right, so it could also be your ear's anatomy.

    but any earplugs definitely shouldnt be forced.. if its not comfortable, get other ones
  71. axis
    71

    Re. Earplugs at shows

    I went to a metal show on Sunday night, and as the opening band was about to start, everybody started putting earplugs on. I was like that scene in the latest Indiana Jones where he realizes that the town is about to get nuked. Holy crap... I don't have earplugs! I ran for the bathroom. Then the wall of noise hit, and I just said, "How important is it to hear on Monday, anyway?"
  72. kks
    72

    @kn0ttyn3rb

    the music earplugs are made specifically to not drown out high frequencies as much (ie guitar, high vocals, cymbals), and have much more of an even quieting among all frequency ranges rather

  77. MusicSoop
    77

    Earplugs

    When I remember them I always use them. They're always a good idea for saving your hearing as long as you can. Important for concerts. Reallllllly important if you're in a band and rehearse in small confined spaces at loud volume.

    78

    @kks

    Thanks for the run down! Coraline it is.

    During the playoffs when we saw the preview for 'Fighting' over and over and over again, we had this running joke where, at the end of the preview, someone would ask, "What's that movie even about?" and then everyone would look perplexed and be like, "I have no idea." Finally someone would say, "I think it's about fighting or something."

    @Absotively
    a friend of mine actually gave me the normal sized ones because they were too big for her and she got the small ones for herself and loves em.. so yeah if you really have to force em in get the small ones. also it sounds kinda gross, but you can also 'lubricate' them a bit with some good ol fashioned spit and theyll slip up easier too :p

    @AlexOfAnders
    exactly. ive been to too many loud shows (a 2.5 hour van halen concert which set the record for volume at the stadium, ears rang for __4 days__ afterwards), and i have to ask people to repeat things constantly.. i know some people who are too vain to use ear plugs, then i just tell them 'you want your hearing to be as bad as mine?' and they come around..

    and yes i definitely find them better than the typical orange/yellow drug store earplugs. they tend to just muffle and quiet everything, so you cant really hear anything. with these, you can actually hear what the singer says in between songs rather than "mffmmfmm, mmffmmmmff!!". and in many cases (mars volta comes to mind..) you can actually hear the music, instead of an extremely high pitched eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the whole time.

    you get all the energy of the band, but you hear it at a manageable level, and dont destroy your hearing! it's quite nice
  81. kks
    81

    @binsy

    no prob! enjoy :) get the 3D and sit in the middle close enough to the screen that it fills your field of view (instead of sitting near the back)
