TCNH: Water Cooler Wednesday, May 12, 2009

Posted by Craig Norris on May 13, 2009
Every hump day, I like to turn the ol' blog into one giant, international, virtual water cooler where we can gather and commisserate. Feel free to air your beefs, share your joys and/or just hang out and listen on the comments section below.

As is usually the case, I will provide some possible conversation starters...

:: Halifax getting its "Virginity"
    (First, a KISS.)

:: Barenaked Ladies song inspires ice cream flavour
    (But does anyone want ice cream that tastes like "The Old Apartment"?)

:: STAMPIN' Tom Connors?

...but don't feel tied down by any of these! Usurp! Usurp! Usuuuurp!

    BNL Ice Cream

    After all the ice cream flavour names we came up with on Lanarama, that was the best they could do on their own? I would have preferred Bachmint Turner Orea to that.

    Also, BC elections were disappointing, but I'm used to it. Elections always seem to be disappointing.

    BC Election

    The biggest disappointment of the election was the voter turnout.

    Re: TCNH: Water Cooler Wednesday, May 12, 2009

    So, I'm not going to assume everyone here even cares about the BC election but those who know of STV, what do you think?

    I like it but then I don't care about my riding increasing cause I never feel like these guys do anything riding specific anyways and I'm almost always one of the many unrepresented voters.
  16. melshim
    16

    @whethergirl; @Alex

    whether: It's always the voter turnout that's the most disappointing. Something like 52%? Awful.

    Alex: I was hoping for the STV!! Would this "Bachmint Turner Orea" be like Mint Chocolate Chip? Because that is the best flavour ever.

    I'm disappointed the STV vote didn't come nearly as close to winning as it did last time. BC, you could have been a catalyst for change...
  22. AlexOfAnders
    22

    @melshim

    I believe it was supposed to be mint and oreo (although, why wouldn't you add more chocolate to that). I didn't come up with that flavour though. My winner seemed to be Sunset Rumdown (Raisin Spirit Lover).

    STV and GLS

    The STV system is intriguing. Similar proposals have been made here in the U.S., but have come nowhere near being evaluated by the electorate. As usual, Canada is way ahead of the curve, even if the system wasn't approved.

    Please excuse the rant and multiple posts within a short time period

    Oh yeah, and about BC-STV ad campaigns. When I started to think about it, they were campaigning the wrong demographic. "Power Up Your Vote" isn't going to resonate with people that aren't at least the Atari generation yet those are the people that needed convincing. The younger voters were all for it even without the campaign, the problem with them is just getting them out to vote.

    I heard the FPTP group had a campaign of TV ads with votes evaporating or something. My friend told me he felt it was affective towards making people afraid of change (I don't have cable so I don't see commercials). But the ads sounded like they weren't so demographic specific.

    BC-STV, I just don't get what your marketing group was thinking.
  26. rdickie
    26

    Hmm..

    A girl's friends can be quite selfish. A girl who gave me friendly signal. A girl who I've really been wanting for some time. But she is with a group of friends. Being an engineer, and a bit of a shy one at that, makes things hard enough but _always_ my equally scientific/engineering friends get the deal and we start walking and then I usually find myself alone without a wingman. I never have a chance that way and get denied by the friends before it even starts.

    Any girls out there reading this, please give some of us a chance. It's no wonder everyone around here is single.

    Ice Cream

    The BNL flavour so doesn't have a million flavours. It's just nuts, chocolate and some sugar. Put in some fruit and spices and you might be closer to a million.
    And probably not as tasty.

    Yeah, I think they needed to get the spirit of STV across to people. The whole idea is that you can vote for who you want as your first choice, no matter who it is you don't have to worry about your vote going to waste. No more "strategic" voting, just vote for who represents you.

    yesterday I saw a guy walking the rail of the Osborne St bridge in Winnipeg while casually smoking a cigarette. He didn't look crazy, but you never know.

    And am I a bad person because the only reason I didn't want him to fall into the river was because I was really hungry and on my way home and didn't want to end up being the one stuck throwing him a life preserver and calling 911?

    Neighbors in Condo Buildings

    Anyone having a hard time with neighbors in their apartment building? We have recieved a couple of noise complaint letters and are worried we are going to get fined. However, our other neighbors on our floor have never heard us at all. It feels like all we have to do is turn on the radio and our neighbor is calling us to turn it down. Do we have any protection against a crazy neighbor or do we have to just hope that the Property Manager sees through her craziness and doesn't fine us. We are living in fear of making any noise and it is no way to live.

    Reading while walking

    I've definitely tried to finish my paragraph or chapter while manoeuvering out of public transit. Dangerous but not in a cool "look at how crazy, agile and awesome" way. Just kind of a dorky"can't put this amazing book down" way.
  51. whethergirl
    51

    @s

    @rocknrollloser - maybe a reason to call them garbanzo beans? except that then they sounds like crazy, jumping muppets.

    @MikeV - if it's a good book and I'm not in a rush and the street isn't busy and the weather is good, I'll read and walk.

    And walks that turn into dancing are the best walks ever. When the endorphins from a walk make you start dancing down the sidewalk it's a good day. I haven't done that in ages....hmmm....
  52. MikeV
    52

    @rocknrollloser

    I have no idea what it was. I was distracted by the fact she was wearing track pants and they were making a swishing sound. I got away from the whole situation as fast as I could.

    If you like I could also show up wearing an apple costume.

    haha I had a bio teacher in highschool who when she wanted to distract us for awhile so she could leave the room for a couple minutes she would say "Chickpeas...neither a chick nor a pea...discuss" and then run out of the room. Hiiiillarious.

    @ Reading while walking

    I definitely do it, although usually I just do the crossword while walking. You read a clue, put the paper to your side and think about it for a bit. Works well.

    I might have played games on my phone while walking, generally only do that during straight stretches.

    I've seen people dancing to music randomly in the street, and I think its awesome. From a 3rd party perspective, 1 person may look insane but 2 people doing it looks like fun.. so.. join in! :D

    What I don't really get are people singing very loudly with headphones on.. I might hum and whistle but full on signing is a bit odd. Oh the things you see on toronto public transit..

    Re: TCNH: Water Cooler Wednesday, May 12, 2009

    I like to walk but I rarely have the energy to walk let alone dance when I'm trashed. If I'm walking I'm at most buzzed, usually sober. Trashed = taxigetmetomybedimgonnasleepheretillthen

    Like I said, I just enjoy walking. If it's a clear night I've been known to walk from the Biltmore into Kits after a show.

    @kks - that's awesome to hear! Mostly that's what i found, going solo wasn't so much not as good but just as good and for some shows better. The only thing you miss out is inbetween set banter, pre and post show shenanigans. Hopefully I'll make it out to Tdot again sometime, I have a good friend out there I'd always like to visit and I liked the city.

    @ak17 - Under STV there isn't much to understand, just rank the people you like. You can just vote for one guy or you can rank everyone. People like to say it's confusing and hard to understand because its an easy excuse and it's more complex then FPTP (which is ludicrously simple IMO)

  96. melshim

    @everyone telling "bum" stories

    I was in France and was waiting for the subway when on the other side of the station, two punks were duking it out. Well, more like starting to. One guy even went so far as to unbuckle his belt and try to whip the other guy. It was scary, but somewhat amusing at the same time.
  97. LeyLey

    About Bums

    There are two bums in Vancouver that I have seen allot of in the last few years. The first is the one-arm pushup guy - does anyone know who I mean? I saw him the other day - he looks like he's aged about 30 years... its sad.
    The other is this Dad-like guy with glasses, who showed up in Vancouver about 4 years ago... an almost normal person on the streets, at first. After about a year, he was talking to himself a bit more and not shaving as much, and getting a bit more nutso and more dirty.
    I saw him the other day... he is totally vacant, very dirty... in a wheelchair, missing a leg... very sad.
    You see allot of the same people on the streets of Vancouver, year-in, year-out.

    Its is great!

    And secondly on recycling day we get our share now too of wayward bottle recycle people coming around before the useless-as-tits-on-a-bull real recycling people come by whenever the hell they want later in the day.

    Sadly in our geographic flatness here, I can't imagine they have near the amount of fun that they do out there with their shopping carts.

    Still being a neighbourhood of student rentals from UWO and then Richy Richertons (of which I am neither), I think they make out pretty nicely with the empties they get.

    More of the same in BC

    So once again, one political party has ALL the power, even though most people voted against them.

    Most of us are "represented" by somebody we voted against, and most MLAs "represent" mostly people who voted against them.

    And apparently, most people in BC think all this is OK.

    I don't think it's OK, and I am not going to stop saying so.
