Chances are good that you've never heard of folk singer
Judee Sill, but two of Canada's top musicians are paying tribute to her on a new album.
Both
Final Fantasy and
Ron Sexsmith are covering songs by Sill, a relatively obscure California singer-songwriter who known for her ethereal sound and songs rich with religious images.
They will appear on
Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the Music of Judee Sill, which is being released September 22 on
American Dust.
Judee Sill was the first artist signed to
David Geffen's
Asylum Records, and released two cult LPs in the early '70s before disappearing from the music scene and eventually dying of a drug overdose in 1979. Her music was forgotten for years, but has gained new fame after her albums were re-released in 2005.
In addition to covers of her songs, the album will also include two songs that Sill wrote but never recorded.
"Reach For The Sky" will be brought to life by
Beth Orton, while
Bill Callahan will perform
"Like a Rainbow," which Sill co-wrote with her boyfriend
Lal Baum, who happened to be the grandson of
Wizard of Oz author
L. Frank Baum. (Who knew?)
Other musicians appearing on the album include
Grizzly Bear's
Daniel Rossen,
Marissa Nadler and more.
