What'cha Readin?' - Questioning The Angel Riots

Posted by Vish Khanna on Apr 10, 2009

Dudes. It's another thrilling edition of the What'cha Readin'? Book Club and today we continue to discuss Ibi Kaslik's latest novel, The Angel Riots. As I suggested last week, Kaslik's book seems quite pertinent to general happenings here at Radio 3, what with its focus on an emerging, indie, art-rock ensemble in Montreal who seem poised to take over the world but whose passions nearly overwhelm them. Arcade Fire, The Dears, Stars, or Godspeed You! Black Emperor anyone? Sound familiar?

Last week I neglected to suggest we all reach a certain point in the book before we get into in-depth discussions, ostensibly to avoid spoilers. So first of all, where are you in the book; what part or page are you at? Please let me know and then, later this morning, I'll post a comment suggesting a collective destination point for next week.

Finally for today, if you could ask Ibi Kaslik one question about her novel The Angel Riots, what would it be?

    Get your shocked face out

But I am actually reading this one. But I am not that far in yet – still be introduced to the characters. But this long weekend I plan to remedy that.

How be you give us somewhere to be by next Friday?

That is shocking! I'm happy you're reading this book.
Based on your question though, you didn't read my blog post now, did you?

    Favourite band

I would definitely be interested in hearing what Ibi's favourite bands are! Montreal bands, specifically, or whatever she's been listening to lately.

I am a third of the way through

But will have lots of reading time this weekend.

I read a segment this morning that was so pertinent to me:

"...the way The Divine Light and The Riots bleed into each other now. There is hardly any distinction between the two bands...the crowded stage gets more and more chaotic...

Brought me right back to the first time I saw Stars and Apostle of Hustle a number of years ago. I knew nothing about either band, who was who. Only that were a mass of bodies squeezed onto the small stage, making a cacophony of sound with all matter of every kind of instrument.

    It was a fantastic experience.

I am really enjoying this book.

    Dysfunctional families are us

So, there's a lot of human sadness in this book. I'm especially struck by the idea of families. The Angel Riots are made up of people who've fled their own families and try to find solace in the new one they have created, that is, THE BAND. But, then, that falls apart too. I feel like this is a strong reminder that the family dynamic has shifted permanently for all of us, and that where what we are from doesn't matter so much as what you do.
I still kind of miss the tidy nuclear family - or at least the idea of it...
