Last weekend some very fine bands got together for a music festival in the United States. They played, conducted business and made fans happy. But before you make the obvious conclusion, I'm not talking about
Coachella. I'm talking about the
New England Metal and Hardcore Festival.
We planned to talk to one of the featured bands at the event, Vancouver's own
Bison BC, but they have broken down in
Syracuse, New York and won't be on home ground until late tonight. But not to worry, we'll find out all about the event on tomorrow's Appetite for Distraction.
I haven't read many reviews from the Metal Fest, but wow - I feel like about as much has been written about
Coachella then was played. Some reverential, like
Pitchfork, the music blog that features most of these bands on a daily basis. And others no so kindly.
Gawker - the media and culture blog - called the event
"Burning Man for rich college kids who read Stereogum." And they posted a bunch of pictures
here to prove their point.
Now I'm not here to tell you that I wouldn't have wanted to a lot of the bands on the
Coachella lineup, I have to say I would rather have been at the Metal Fest. Now before you go "well, duh" let me explain further. I'm basing this decision solely on the band's names. Just a sample (and I'll try to pick the ones lesser known than say Cannibal Corpse, Meshuggah and Lamb of God):
Between the Buried and Me, Surrounded by Teeth, When the Dead Blot Breaks, Cattle Decapitation, All Shall Perish, iwrestledabearonce, This Or The Apocalypse.Yup, I know seeing
Morrissey would have been great, but I have to say one of my new fave band names (and performers - watch and listen to
this) is
iwrestledabearonce. But I'll get more of the skinny tomorrow when
Bison BC joins me for
Tour Diary.
