For The Record Q&A: Great Lake Swimmers Talk Lost Channels

Posted by Jennifer Van Evra on Apr 14, 2009
Your Name:
Tony Dekker, Great Lake Swimmers

Name Of Your New Album:
Lost Channels

Story Behind The Name:
The title comes from a passage of water in the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River called The Lost Channel, where mysterious boat and crew disappearances happened in the 1700s.

What You Wanted To Do:
The new album is an extension of some of the ideas of our previous albums, but with this record the songwriting was meant to be as concise as possible, in order to truly use the three minute song as a medium.

A Favourite Moment:
Recording in Singer Castle on Dark Island.

A Least Favourite Moment:

Getting up at 6 a.m. in order to catch the boat to go to Singer Castle on Dark Island.

A Song You're Excited About:
One of the songs I'm most excited about is the song "Everything Is Moving So Fast" because it is sort of a musical departure for the band. The song started off as a commentary on our current accelerated culture but ended up being about the formation of mountains and the big bang theory.

What Other Songs Are About:
A couple of the other songs are about loneliness, concrete, and dreaming.

How It Feels:
It feels good. And scary.

What You're Doing To Celebrate:
Touring the world.
