Joshua Jackson's One Week Expands To 65 Screens Today!

Posted by Grant Lawrence on Mar 13, 2009

One Week, the motorcycle road-trip movie starring Joshua Jackson, Emm Gryner, Canada, an amazing soundtrack (and featuring cameos by Joel Plaskett and Gord Downie), is expanding to sixty-five screens across Canada today.

The film opened to a limited theatrical release a week ago, and still took in an impressive $400K at the box office, ranking it at #9 of the most-seen films in Canada last weekend.

And thanks to its crafty, fan-generated marketing campaign, One Week has also attracted the attention of the Los Angeles Times, even though the film has only been released in Canada.

The soundtrack is also a who's-who of the CBC Radio 3 playlist - Wintersleep, Stars, Great Lake Swimmers, Sunparlour Players, Patrick Watson and more - which can now be purchased as a complete soundtrack here.

One Week's director, Michael McGowan, will participate in a Q and A tonight and tomorow, March 13 and 14 for the 7:30pm showing at the Varisty Theatre in Toronto.

You can also hear Radio 3's interview with Michael McGowan here.

Have you seen One Week? Do you recommend it? Post your thoughts below...

This movie rocked my world! It was awe inspiring and sweet. Warmed the very cockles of my heart with beautiful images of Canadiana, a terrific soundtrack and relatable understated characters!

    a couple missing songs

I have not seen the movie yet. Hopefully it will come to the theatre on Salt Spring. I'm glad the soundtrack has been organized in one place but everyone should head over to oneweek.ca/music to hear one of the songs not found on iTunes. "UN CANADIEN ERRANT" Performed by Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet is pretty good. I wish I had seen the movie to figure out where it came in. Is this the song mentioned in the interview?

That song apparently has quite a history. It was written in 1842.

    Fantastic!

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time! A must-see for anyone who loves all things Canadiana (and our fascination with "The World's Biggest ____")!

Won't give away any plot details, but the song is played twice. Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland's version is played over the final credits.

    My review

I liked it, but it wasn't earth-shattering. The plot and characters weren't original, and if if weren't for the barrage of canadiana references the film it was have been pretty cheezy. But it was still good! I think the writers/directors were trying to create a standard romance/adventure film that was completely catered to a Canadian audience for a change. I doubt they set out to create a mind-blowing movie experience, just one Canadians could identify with.
Joshua Jackson played the character really well, and Gord Downie an he Alberta cow-lady were highlghts. The narration was also very well-done, with quirky insights.
Also, for anyone familiar with the locations in the film, you will notice there's a lot of 'camera magic' I noticed that on the highway out to Tofino he was driving east rather than west, and was sitting on a beach on town, but gazing out at a long (outside of town)

    art and life

this film meant a lot to me, and although i agree that man aspects of it were not original, there were personal significances i could not escape. when joel plaskett appeared singing my favourite song on a street corner, i couldn't help myself from crying! the music is poignantly connected to the story, which is poignantly connected to ou rcountry, but also to very personal stories like cancer. see it, even if isn't mind-blowing, they might just drink your favourite wine or beer on screen, or visit your favourite restaurant where you had your first date with your now-fiance.

    Just good, not great

I'm cheering for this film's success but at the end of the day, it was just good for me. My favourite parts of the film were when I recognized places I have visited. As jillenium00 pointed out, if it were not for the Canadian references, I would not have liked it at all.

    really loved this film

I really loved this film and am planning to go see it again. It was a strange contradiction because it was all so subtle despite the fact that almost everything that happened was life altering. Cinematography was beyond the pale, acting was great - Emm Gryner was the highlight, music was perfect -again, Emm Gryner was a highlight and this was my first exposure to her. Ben was such a great character, and I think Joshua Jackson was brilliant. thanks.

Your show at the Biltmore last Friday was great! Thanks for a great time!

As for the film: I really enjoyed it. It was more than just a man with cancer; to me, the film was about a love of Canada, evoking patriotisms in Canadians with its beauty.

    Joel Plaskett...

His cameo made my heart go pitter patter...

As for the film... It has some really great moments and some kind of disappointing ones. I felt that it was just a little too grey visually and some moments seemed kind of lack luster instead of magical like they should have been. But, but, there are some great points to the film too, like being able to identify places in the film and it's overall Canadian-ness is nice to see instead of films trying to be American.

There were moments where I felt like the CanCon was too heavy. Like all the Canadian music and the landmarks, even down to the subtle things like the type of beer they drank.
I found myself place spotting and song naming so much that I was distracted from the plot.

On the other hand, it is important to make films that show our culture, and connect us as a nation. I just think this film went a bit overboard.

    Less than three

I love this movie. The cinematography was beautiful. It had a heartbreaking story. The music was wonderful. The cameos were oh-so-Canadian. Who WOULDN'T want to make love to Emm Gryner in the middle of a forest? Love. Love. Love.

I just saw it and felt so good after. It was uplifting and filled with great music. Joel Plaskett's cameo was great. I saw so many familiar Manitoba locations (including my parents home town) that I cheered loudly (and then felt bad for the noise).
