It was
Valentine's Day 2004 when the newly-renovated
Drake Hotel re-opened its doors and started its love affair with Toronto indie culture on
Queen Street West. Since those early days, the venue has hosted fast-rising bands, cutting-edge art shows, and countless hipster schmoozes.
Now the venue is marking its
5th anniversary with a month of celebrations.
Some of the events include a building-wide, invitation-only Anniversary Gala hosted by
Jian Ghomeshi and featuring
the Besnard Lakes, as well as folk legend
Neil Halstead, Broken Social Scene's
Brendan Canning on DJ duty and more. Art installations include works by Montreal's
Michael Snow and Miami's
TM Sisters.
If you don't make the guest list for that show, you can try a
Quick Fix - five weeks of free performances throughout the building on Thursday nights (
February 19-26); an art exhibit called
Appetite for Construction that brings back some of the Drake's best-received artists; and a new menu of time-honoured favourites.
The Drake is also turning back the clock in its pricing. You can treat yourself to
a room with spa specials for the 2004 rate of $129, and live large with the Drake
"original classic cocktails" - all at prices from five years ago - in February and March.
