Coming Up: Sunparlour Players
This year I was in a music video for 3 Inches of Blood. If you haven’t caught it yet, it’s here. My first exposure to music videos came via the TV, now it’s hard to imagine anyone seeing them on anything besides their computer.
I also recall a time when music videos were a big deal. Now… not so much; more perfunctory it seems. Now a music video could be some guys at home playing practicing a dance routine; or a culled bunch of clips from movies set to music. Instead of necessarily advertising the song, the goal now is for the video to go viral… which I guess helps the band in the end, but could end up taking on a life of its own and being more famous than the band. How many people actually went out and saw Ok Go?
The funny thing is this should be the heyday for music videos. All we want is good videos to watch and send around to friends. One of my favourite blogs just started their own video site.
I don’t really have any stats on how useful videos are for bands anymore, but I sure enjoyed looking through Pitchfork’s “Top 100 Music Videos of 2009.” Not sure if it will make me buy more music, but is that the point anymore?
Andrew Penner of the Sunparlour Players joins me for today's Tour Diary installment. No video talk here, just good ol fashioned chat about the weather, preserves and Thunder Bay.
