Today on Lanarama: Tweet of the Day! Who Do You Love to Follow on Twitter?

Posted by Lana Gay on Dec 02, 2009

Years from now, when I look back at 2009, I will surely remember a very special relationship, my rocky road with Twitter.  The dislike, the mocking, the improper use of lingo (do I say twitter or tweet? Oh god, did I accidentally say tw@t?) the hatred of the 140 character limit, the love of the 140 character limit, the obsession with @nickfromislands and now, it seems like a practical way to get news from bands.

So today on Lanarama, we kick officially kick of Tweet of the Day, and we’ll also see what kind of music news/ gossip/ anecdotes will be popping up today.

I follow a lot of Musicians too many to list off.  Winter Gloves, Said the Whale, Hanna Georges are a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

Have you started crying yet?  Regarding Mr. Muc?  Have to admit I'm a little misty.

I'll admit, I actually got Twitter in the first place for the sole purpose of following Two Hours Traffic, but Hannah Georgas's Tweets are also pretty amusing to read  :)

    Twitters I dislike

I'm not gonna give names but I dislike those that tweet way too much if i look on my twitter home page and it is all one user they usually get unfollowed. I don't feel like sorting through 50 tweets by one person to see other people's tweets that I like.

    @Lee

what's going on with the webmaster? I dunno if I'm missing a joke or what's going on.

@ Lana - As for twitter, I still haven't got into it. When I get a smart phone I probably will.  I read somewhere that Christopher Walken's tweets were pretty funny and I checked some out. They were, but I haven't gone back to them either.  Does seem like it's good to keep on info from bands as they are touring and whatnot

The BEST person to follow on Twitter is @hawksleyworkman. STW, Hannah Georgas and various other BC-based bands have total love-ins, it's very cute to witness their back and forth conversations. :)

    ah, twitter.

my list is starting to get a bit overwhelming. i'm going to have to either start unfollowing, or better organize my lists.

one of my favourites: wil wheaton. he brings so much amusement to my day. especially his conversations with inanimate objects/his pets.

I love twitter. At first I thought it was such a strange concept but now I use it all the time. I have tweetdeck on my iPhone so I read news in the morning on my way to work on Twitter from CBC News and sports stories from TSN. I follow many musicians as well. The Dudes are pretty entertaining. And then of course I follow CBC Radio 3 (which has helped me win free concert tickets a couple of times) and its personalities, such as the lovely Lana Gay.

re: Today on Lanarama: Tweet of the Day! Who Do You Love to Follow on Twitter?

Twitter's okay, I guess. the catch is that once you get beyond some critical number of people you're following, it really becomes information overload. I'd like to think that the lists that you can create now would help, but I do most of my Twitter viewing via the Yoono add-on for Firefox, which doesn't yet have lists in it.

A couple that I find entertaining:

Stephen Fry - he's much more geeky than I would've guessed, although it's that Mac pseudo-geeky and not serious hardcore geeky.

Jann Arden - very funny lady to follow

awryone - gets a bit carried away with the puns, but some of them are quite funny, and one of them made me think of foodie friday:

"need to cut down on the bacon. woke up this morning with a raging lard-on"

    :o)

I follow a few bands as well, but many of them just tweet to tell you where they're playing.

    Still Holding Out

Still Holding Out but I'm sure I'll get into it at some point.  So far all I've even looked at are Jill Barber and Six Shooter Records and a couple of venues where it seems the twitter is much more reliable than the calendar.

    Managing twitter

I much prefer reading tweets on tweetdeck to the web version. It's nice to have the tweets organized into lists so that all of the similar things are grouped together and you don't have this giant overwhelming flood of random information.

re: Today on Lanarama: Tweet of the Day! Who Do You Love to Follow on Twitter?

Twitter often gets used as a substitute for an RSS reader. You can follow people or organizations who will post links to interesting stories (if they're not just blog flogging for their own blog).

    Twitter lists

Twitter does allow you to create lists and filter on them (Facebook does, too), so you can put all your bands under a single list and click on that.

    It's a relatively new function

    twitter...

I don't use it at all. It makes sense for following bands or organizations but there are other ways to do that. I really don't need another thing to distract me online.

    not canadian or musical

stephen fry, the hyphenate.  he's hilarious (as are his books if you've never picked one up).  he tends to over-tweet but still worth it

i'm a bit hit or miss with the twitter still but i have my moments.

my other fav is local toronto musician Dave Borins.  he's fun & he uses it for promo without going overboard.

krib--thanks for the reminder about Jann Arden.  she's a great blogger & i hadn't linked with her yet.  heading there right now.  she's freakin' hilarious.  hunt down the speeddating outtakes from Robson Arms (season 1)

I am completely obsessed with GLEE.  They are my number one right after Lana Gay of course.

One thing I cannot master is the retweet.  It boggles me.  I hit the retweet button and I am always over the limit.

neil patrick harris is on twitter. his first few tweets sent me into fits of laughter. i've gained respect for him since 'how i met your mother' and 'dr. horrible'. dude is funny.

did you know that bill nye the science guy is on twitter?! doesn't update much, though...

    some music ones:

gunshyzine has some pretty rad stuff.

WeAreTheCity gets in on the twitter convo's with STW & hannah georgas. it gets pretty amusing.

    are you following NxEW yet?

paperbag records and merge are also on twitter.

hahaha...i swear i saw your little note @ Jann but not that you'd mentioned Stephen Fry too, while i was typing.

re: Today on Lanarama: Tweet of the Day! Who Do You Love to Follow on Twitter?

yeah, I actually got in under the wire, so Stephen Fry's following me as well. He reached the point at about 50K followers where he said "sorry, but I can't really follow back anymore"

    33

re: Today on Lanarama: Tweet of the Day! Who Do You Love to Follow on Twitter?

    boyforpele - re: retweeting

you really have no choice but to edit the tweet to shorten it if you want to retweet. That 140 char limit is a hard one and you'll hit it often.

  36. krib
    36

re: Today on Lanarama: Tweet of the Day! Who Do You Love to Follow on Twitter?

So, how many people actually tweet, as opposed to following people?

I've been on Twitter for a while and I think I've got a grand total of 200-250 tweets. Seems pointless to me to be posting junk like "just had my morning coffee," so I tend to tweet only when posting links to interesting articles, or when I'm blog flogging

    love twitter

I recall a few days after i took the twitter plunge being mocked, a lot, by a (not to be named) person, that now uses it religiously for their own self promotion... which is what i use it for, and to stay in close contact with work/potential clients and I've even received an assignment through speaking to someone on twitter

as a photographer i follow the bands that i shoot, other photographers and LOTS of magazines. in fact i've made a space in my little black book of industry contacts for their twitter names.

my favourite find of today? @bitterwedphotog tweets from a wedding photographer that says everything that wedding photographers never say to their clients. its hilarious.

Story: two days ago i got a message from my father saying "Can you write how the symbols in twitter drive people to websites or how you use them?" i clarified that he wanted me to write an email so he could explain twitter to the other insurance guys that he was meeting with in Banff. So i spent 20 mintues writing up an explaination of hashtags, the @ symbol and retweeting (though i tried REALLY hard not to write "tweet" i HATE saying it, i just say updates)

a few hours later i got an email from him saying he was asked for COPIES of it.

    if you're into it: @christinemcavoy

    blog flogging...

for my own blog, that is. Or one of them, anyway. The second one gets updated much less frequently, which, when you see how little I blog on the "main" one, you'll wonder how that's possible...

I haven't been paying much attention to twitter recently.  Or ever, really, even though I've signed up and everything.  But then, I'm not fascinated by Facebook, either.

I do like to check Amanda Palmer's twitter, mostly because I'm fascinated by the ways she uses it for connecting to fans.  But I think I unfollowed her because she was single-handedly drowning out everyone else I was following.

  47. TheRadioHead

Oh Pilou, why you so sexy?

Like  others here, I have not drank the twitter kool aid yet.  I am terrified of  becoming obsessed with it.

That said, I used a term on facebook recently that CNDZ said would be a good Twitter name, so I did open an account.

Stephen Fry is a good follow.  I remember during the coup in Iran during the summer he was retweeting proxies for Iranians to circumvent government filters.  Given he played a prominent anti-fascist comedian in V for Vendetta, it was impressive watching reality imitate art.

    Tweet tweet tweet

Now that I'm getting the swing of twitter better I really like following bands. You get more information on shows, releases, tidbits of info and even some input on things. I also kind of like following some of the people I know such as @kn0ttyn3rb @backstageblog @melanieshim and a multitude of R3 blog commenters & R3 staff. There's not a lot of random people I follow and I agree about that comment on people who over tweet. There's enough to wade through without seeing 15 posts from one person in the last 10 minutes. Same goes for the "Just ate a sandwich, sooooooogooooodadawaeiohsud#@!4" people who only tweet info like that. Once and a while, sure, whatever. Like, "Just tried the new GI pumpkin ale, what a let down!" that's fine.

I dunno where I'm going with this anymore, I'm just rambling instead of doing work

    @Lee

Yeah, it was a let down. This was the first year they made it and it wasn't really pumpkin-ey or anything really. It just tasted like an ale that maybe they dipped a slice of pumpkin in and wave a cinnamon stick over.

What turned out to be really good was the Phillip's Crooked Tooth Pumpkin Ale. Not too sweet but a good hit of pumpkin and spices. Sadly, I only managed to get one bottle before it disappeared.

As much as i hate being one of those people who thrive off of celebrity gossip, and i really try not to be. I will admit i follow 3 different celebrities, i know its not as much as most. But out of those 3 there is only 1 of those celebrities that i get excited "aboot" is non other than Neil Patrick-Harris, i know it sounds like im one of the few million who enjoy How I Met Your Mother, but NPH tweets are nothing less than hilarious, his tweet links are always enjoyable whether there music references, or funky t-shirt designs.
