Today on Lanarama: Techie Tuesday! A Fond Farewell to Scott Muc!

Posted by Lana Gay on Dec 15, 2009

Back in April 2007 I got chatting about music with out Senior Web Developer, Scott Muc.  While he described a cool open source music player called Songbird, and I scribbled down notes, I thought, heck, why not have Scott on as our tech expert!  That day Techie Tuesday was born.

86 shows later, Scott has answered your questions on everything from hard drives to iPods to our brand new website.  We’ve celebrated Square Root Day together *sigh*, made predictions for the techie future, almost had Scott opening up for Aerosmith and have had some pretty great times with you.

Today I’m very sad to announce that our Senior Web Developer Scott Muc is leaving Radio 3.  He is heading to Calgary to be a consultant for Thoughtworks and has already made me cry 3 times.

So, today on the show, we celebrate Scott Muc! We’ll be heading down Memory Lane, and also going through the ‘5 Things You Don’t Know About Scott Muc’. The lovely Magneta Lane will also be on the show today to make Scott blush and chat about opening up for Sloan’s current tour!

So, now’s your time to say goodbye to Scott and also give us your favourite Muc Memory! Do you have a question for Scott?

    Goodbye Scott!

I expect to see you the next time I'm down in Calgary, ok?

And I was already going to link to this today, but given the news, please consider it a weird farewell present.  A weird farewell present with minor issues, which I probably won't fix until/unless I get annoyed with them.

Could Scott potentially call in for the occasional cameo appearance?

    I will miss you Scott!

We had lots of laughs, and always interesting conversations.

Hope you love your new job, and your new city.

And if you only take one thing away from our time together, let it be this...give up golf.

    Congrats & Farewell!

Congrats on the new job Scott! Hope you have a great move to Calgary... We'll miss you on Techie Tuesday!

Question: How will your move affect your use of technology, if at all? More teleconferencing? More mid-air laptopping?... Any plans for new gear?

    Do tell. :)

    Farewell champion of technology!

I hope you keep in touch! We'll miss you around here but you gotta follow your dreams and it sounds like Thoughtworks is going to be great. You're passionate about what you do and they'll be lucky to have you. I still owe you two going-away/congratulation beers though! Going to Sloan tonight? BTW, I'm still trying to scalp my last ticket off if anyone needs one.

    Thanks for everything Scott

Your mark will always be felt at R3...as I've said before, the new R3 site is a work of beauty. It was great to meet you at the open house a few Friday's ago. Good luck in cowtown, make sure to still cheer for the Canucks come playoff time and do call in to Lana's show the odd Tuesday...also thanks for all the great tips over all the shows...and for being a great on air geek advocate

@Abso - that is so sweet! (both ways of sweet...as in cool and awww)

    The Future of Muc

I'm just wondering how many people at Thoughtworks have their own theme song?  Think he'll play it every day before starting work?

Happy and sad at the same time

Well, Scott, when you announced it a couple of weeks ago, it did take me by surprise, as I feel that Radio3 has the perfect staffing right now, and you are such a great asset to Lana's show.  But now you're going to follow your dream.  I certainly wish you well.  I've appreciated your help on some of my computer issues. (BTW, today I had our IT people come down and upgrade my Flash Player, and I can now stream audio again without resorting to the MP3 stream!)  I enjoyed having lunch with you and Mark while in Vancouver.

One thing that I want to share with everyone: when I visted Radio3 on October 1, it was less than a week before the new website debuted.  During my time visiting, I spent more time at Scott's desk, watching in amazement as he showed me the new website and what it was designed to do.  This website IS Scott's baby.  And he showed it off to me like a proud father.

And so, Scott, I eat a real Canadian baked maple cookie to your honour and wish you all the best.  One thing that Lana must insist: you keep in contact with Radio3.

Don't forget, I'll caddy for you if you come down to play any of our foothill golf courses.

    Oh yeah, favourite Muc memory

On the show, I'd have to say that Valentine's day show where you fed him every aphrodisiac you could find. That, and the theme songs, I love those. I hope we get some Scott's Tips before he leaves.

Thoughtworks? Maybe you'll meet Martin Fowler- he was involved with them. Or maybe you've met him already...

Did they do one of those interview 2.0 things, like ask you how you'd design a bike for a blind person ,or calculate the weight of the moon (without looking it up on google).

Good luck in Calgary. Bring your winter coat!

    My Fave from Scott?

Hmmm, it's been awhile but I gotta say my faves would be asking Scott about Guitar Hero or Rock Band but the worse part being that he doesn't own a Nintendo Wii. :) I wished Scott did hear me speak on the air as I have been posting my radio show (another station) via my blog. But yea, best of luck, Scott. Psst, I am still having trouble spacing on the blog here. :( How many times to press Return? :)

hey guys, i promise i've been out of bed for a while... but word to the wise partying with the Racoons is dangerous.

I don't have any technology questions currently, but I'm trying to set up an ikea bookcase that I'm holding on to for my neighbour and I dont have a wall anchor yet, so I'm a little worried its going to crash at some point. :s@Lana - www.mcavoy.ca/theVogue:)

that's cool! I haven't met him, but I did meet Grady Booch at a conference. And Ivor Jacobson - a company I worked for in TO many years ago was trying to woo him on to our board.

    @ Scot and Lana

my truck at home (in Whitehorse) has three plug ins.  There's nothing like arriving home late one night and scrambling under the front bumper with a frozen rigid extension cord and trying to jam three just as frozen plugs into the end of it.  Sooo much fun, especially in the dark!  (Could just leave the headlights on but then will I get zapped?  Do I want to risk it?  Do I just want to steal my parents car out of the garage?)

No winter jacket or a block heater?!?  Oh dear you are so unprepared for colder weather.  First thing first you should purchase yourself a winter jacket before you move out this way.

  33. Absotively
    33

    @brainwash

No, 'cause most of HTML5 isn't supported by much of anything yet, so it's not used much.  I only bring it up because it looks so pretty.

Although it would be nice if they would finish it already.  And put it in a different form for those of us who don't care that much about the details of parsing invalid code.

    Edmonton - cold day

The record was set at the international airport.  It was marginally warmer in the city.

It was still pretty cold, but it wasn't insanely cold.

    36

    Scott!

I had said I hoped you love your new city, not knowing you were a life long Vancouverite.  But now I am just worried.

For the love of all things frozen, get a block heater before leaving that province.   And some good long underduds.  And a hat with flaps.

At least in Calgary you can look forward to the occasional chinook.

    Magneta Lane

I was only moderately excited to see Sloan here in Winnipeg, but super anxious to finally see Magneta Lane, and they did not disappoint.

Thanks for a great show!   From someone in a city where your snot freezes!

And it least it's usually sunny here in calgary!

As long as you bundle up, it can be really beautiful in the winter.

  41. TheRadioHead
    41

    @keydive

Do you like that?  Isn't it hard to go back and forth?  And then the melt refreezes into ice?  Not sure I would care for that.

We are still in a deep freeze, but as danica says, it is sunny and easy to bundle up for.  We have only a dusting of snow.

But Martin is arriving on Thursday, and he has brought snow to every stop he has made.

    @Radiohead

The freeze thaw isn't that bad. The chinook should be here long enough to get ride of most of the snow in th city which means no more icy sidewalks to just about die on everyday.

I loved this comment on that Nickleback thread:

"Who are these people?! Absolutely everyone I know hates Nickelback with a passion. Are these the same people who are buying Sarah Palin's book?"
