Hump Day! Yaaay! How are you all doing today? Well, I hope. I'm doing well, thanks. You know what day it is? YESSSS! It's Water Cooler Wednesday!!

For those of you to whom this is a new phenomenon, let me brief you. Today is the day that I turn my blog entry into the world's largest, online water cooler where we gather and exchange opinions and ideas. Stop by and get in on the conversation!     guys. there's still snow on the ground from yesterday. I DO NOT LIKE THIS.

    craig, i'm sorry, i am going to continue a conversation here that was started during vish's show. i hope you don't mind.

    @benoit scrappy bitch tour! yes, it was amazing. i went with my then boyfriend & group of friends. i had NO idea what to expect as i had never heard of kinnie starr, oh susanna, OR veda hille. but oh my goodness i fell in love with all three. we spoke to kinnie after wards, she was pretty cool. my copy of her tidy album is one of my prized cd's. it was quite an experience for me. listening to veda hille on that stage made my fingers itch to play piano again, but considering it is still sitting in my room unused, the itch wasn't bad enough. i definitely have a huge crush on kinnie starr! oh susanna has come to town since, but i didn't find out until much later. i think if i had to have a least favourite of the three, it would have been her. only because there was a bit more country to her sound than i would have liked. (at the time i was very CAN'T STAND COUNTRY, i absolutely adore her now!)

    the most serene republic was an awesome show! i showed up pretty late, due to things i had to finish before going. it was a very sloppy show, the lead singer was QUITE drunk. i was quite amused!

    Craig: the end of the decade?

    Nope.

    Again, as when we were coming up to 2000, we're facing the "odometer year" --the moment when the numbers change, this time from 09 to 10 -- not as exciting as from 1999 to 2000, but so it goes.

    Still, a decade involves ten years: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

    Thus, the current decade ends on Dec. 31, 2010, the next one starts January 1, 2011.

    (That's the only time I'll mention it, 'cause people go all wonky about this. Or did in 1999, anyway.)

    Question: to any of you reviewers out there: how the heck do you stay so professional? I can't remember a set list for the life of me, even minutes after the show. Do you bring a notepad with you? And if so, how do you do that and still have fun?

    If I wanted to review, I'd bring a notepad, but then take very short notes. Scribble some song titles (the best), a few key words to remember your thoughts and impressions. Then put it away and boogie. And pull it out again if need be. Then put it away again.

    There is a reviewer I know, not much fun I think, who brings a laptop and starts composing the review on the spot. I wouldn't.

    Amanda Putz, who reviews generally in the course of some blubs, doesn't take notes, but then she doesn't often mention specifics either, just general impressions. Which is another way of doing things, as specifics often appeal more to the rabid fan than to a more general public.

    yeah, i don't like it either. when i turned 10, I had lived for 10 years, including year 0-1. i.e. a decade. so there. and so, when the A.D. timing system began, it presumably began in year 0, not 1, and therefore by year 10, it had been 10 years, i.e. a decade? no? anyhooch. here i am, getting all wonky, just like you said i would. @mattyjames... loved that you were featured on the blog. love the watermelon tears. i have work colleagues who were trying to figure out the watermelon-on-head thing... is there an easy explanation I can offer to Ottawans, as a proud prairie girl?

    No offense, but I would prefer if the nuclear power people focus on the nuclear powering and the not having a meltdown thingy, but if they can do that and bop there head a bit that would fine I guess.

    Well, it's the real count: year 0 to 1 = 1, and then keep on 'til 10.

    IMO, it's all because we humans are NOT basically mathematical or scientific, we work more from impressions. So when things go from 199,999 to 200,000, we go "wow, new hundred-millenium!" It looks that way, doesn't it, and we don't stop to think.

    (And in 1999, there was this visceral, American-type of reaction against the fact: sort of "fuck you Poindexter and stop raining on our 2000 parade". Scientists are still not big South of here, and we Canucks follow suit to an extent.)

    Yeah, sure, but just count the years in your post no. 24, and you come up with 9! As below...

    0 (or, really, the beginning of 1) to 1 (complete) = 1 year

    1-2

    2-3

    3-4

    4-5

    5-6

    6-7

    7-8

    8-9 = 9 years total

    So history books yield to the popular liking and use 9 years, or 99, for their first tome. Et puis après?

    I believe my point stands. (Though it's not "mine"; I'm just bringing back what came up many time prior to 2000. Old news, really.)

    Think of it this way people - when you turned 10 people would tell you "Wow you have been on earth for a decade..." Then you would tune them out because then started talking cliches about growing like a weed.

    At age 11 you didn't have to hear that old people jibber jabber - Why because a decade starts with zeros.

    The end of 2009 would be the end of the decade.

    are you arguing both ways?  if we started counting years at 0, way back ~2010 years ago, then when the calendar flips from 2009 to 2010, then it has already been 2010 years.  i.e. we've completed the decade, and are now working on year 0-1 of the next decade. just like when you turn 10, you have completed 10 years of life on earth. a decade. you're now working on year 11. 

    i am stopping to think about it.  and i really think i'm right (as is craig, and his history books, and aaadama).

    or did someone call the first year of A.D. 1 rather than 0?  I doubt it?

    @biospice, re: watermelons: I believe they started just as a way of sneaking in booze (injecting vodka and eating it), or maybe they did it in reference to the Green Bay packer's cheese head.  Long story short, we don't know.  Just like we don't know why we call it a bunny hug, why we don't adjust our clocks, and why we even live here.

    @benoit, re: reviewing: That's a solid plan, I could probably do that.  I guess it depends on the concert though, if I'm double fist pumping I don't really wanna be searching my pockets for a piece of paper, then a pen, then remember what I was gonna write.  then remember to upload it when I get back.  Shit, maybe I'll just bring my laptop.......... NOT.  Thanks for the tips though, I think I'll take Putzy's random blurbs on the night approach.

    Above it states that, when 08-09 is nine years.  That's just the start of 09.  You spend a full year in 09.  Pushing it to ten.

     

    I'm open to this being wrong.  But what your saying hasn't convinced me :P

    Year 0 is nothing; I DID count from year zero (end) to year 1 (end) = 1.

    Then one keeps counting to nine. = 9 years

    Then count 10 -- ALL OF 10! It finishes Dec. 31. That's when the tens finish, at the end, not at the beginning of the tenth!

    Thus, you get ten years complete only when you reach the end of the 10th year, which is to say the beginning of the 11th year. At Jan. 1, 2011.

    Q.E.D., and enough said.

    do the count again and as someone says above, count the whole of the 9 year!!!

    0-1 =1

    1-2 =2

    2-3= 3

    3-4 =4

    4-5 =5

    5-6 =6

    6-7 =7

    7-8 =8

    8-9=9

    and wait for it...

    9-10 (the END of year 9, start of year 10) =10 YEARS.

    we will respect you more for admitting that we have something here, and that your point does not still stand.

    2000~2001 = 1 year

    2001~2002 = 2 years

    2002~2003 = 3 years

    2003~2004 = 4 years

    2004~2005 = 5 years

    2005~2006 = 6 years

    2006~2007 = 7 years

    2007~2008 = 8 years

    2008~2009 = 9 years

    2009~2010 = 10 years.

    If we count all of 2010, then that's an eleventh year!

    exciting news not related to counting!

    In the Dead of Winter has announced their line-up. i have yet to go. hopefully this time i can make it. there are a lot of artists on that list which i would like to see.

    i already mentioned that the ecma's are announcing all of the nominees. my twitter feed is filled with excited comments from people watching the press conference. it's pretty exciting. some r.3 artists are on the nominee list.

    i'm currently pulling my hair out trying to figure out which hotel will be most convenient to stay at while at the ecma's. everything seems spread out..

    Like the I said the first one was bad tasting.

    Then I had a second one, and it had too many seeds.

    I am having a third one now and it is actually quite good.

    You know what kinda sucks?  The first Ani shows were announced for the East Coast included Fredricton and that was it, so a friend of mine bought her plane ticket, booked a hotel, and got a ticket.  Now they've announced her in Halifax where her brother lives and discount airlines fly to!  Sometimes I wish an entire tour would be announced right away or at the same time, at the veryleast, giving people time to choose the mot convienient locaton.

     

    That being said, I also know what it's like to not have everything squared away, but still...

    If you're looking for instructions to make a watermelon helmet as well as a look into the history of the phenomena Bio Spice there is a video on the facebook group Rider Nation. You might have to look around a bit but it should be there.

    Also as far as where the term "bunny hug" came from, my boyfriend (who is a Saskie and a history teacher) has an interesting explanation...

    Back in the day in the cold cold winters people would take the hides from rabbits (likely killed for food) and stitch them, fur side in, to the front of their coats. So imagine the front pocket on the sweater know as either a hoodie or bunnyhug full of soft warm bunny fur. The hug comes from the action of putting your hands in the pocket being similar to hugging yourself I think. And that is apparently why they are called bunnyhugs, I'm a touch skeptical but it does make for a good story.

    That honestly sounds like a good explanation for "bunny-hug".  From what my grandma told me, there used to be a dance you'd do where you would hug your partner from behind, wrapping your hands around their stomach.  hence there is just one large pouch and not two convenient pouches.

    As for water melon helmets, I haven't personally made one.  My friends do though, and their advice is: don't leave it to game day.  And the more juice you can suck out of it will help.  the drier the better.

    Yup Valleytown was written about Dundas, Ontario.  When I was growing up there the population was about 10,000.  Now I think it's up to about 25,000.

    And yes I did see the nxew review...very nice.

    ya, I was just reading up on this Tiger Woods situation. It's pretty sad. I mean, it's really none of our business, but it does show as that everyone is human and that money really can't buy you happiness. 

     

    I don't know if she really chased the crashed truck though. I'm pretty sure it was really damaged and couldn't move. But I did hear she smashed the window to save him.

    The article I read about his accident said taht there were going to be investigations into whether or not his injuries were all caused by the accident or if his wife took a couple swings at him while "saving" him from the wreckage with his own golf club.

    Perhaps like happens to many rockstars (he is a golf rockstar) he has found that being a coked up sex machine makes life feel easier?

    I've always thought he was always a little off, perhaps half a sandwich short of a picnic?

    I feel kinda bad for them. I mean, would we like our personal information be revelved like that? No one likes to be gossiped about. But people do like to gossip. Makes us feel good I guess? I dunno.

    But yeah, I do agree.  I don't even get why people find following celeberites lives to be so excting.  Like, how dull does your own life have to be...

    My life's pretty dull at the moment (sunshine dick is the highlight of my work week), and I still have no interested in *insert whoever people care about today*'s life.

    As much as everyone is entitled to their opinions I agree that no persons life should be plastered on news stands and web sites for the whole world to see.

    It is a shame that this accident and the publicity it has generated has caused Tiger to take a step back from participating in upcoming tournaments. It has affected his life to the point he can't do his job. Yes I said earlier that I've always thought he was a bit off but that is a random personal opinion but I do feel bad for the guy.

    I've never agreed that every celebrity's sex, drug, alchohol, mariage or celulite problems should be known all over the world. But then again it reminds us that they are human and not just all perfect.

    I discovered a celebrity gossip i did enjoy last night, Stumbleupon took me to a page that was ranking celebrity's green actions, if they actually practice what they preach in some cases. It was nice to see Gwenyth Paltrow with a reusable mug and Sara Jessica Parker regularly using a reusable bags. A+

    yes, I agree it's  a masterpiece. i can't quite find the words to describe it... maybe that the human reality of it is shattering, devastating, but still up-lifting, something like that? I also found it to be very educational, or eye-opening, from the point of view of presenting Canadian ethnic diversity in a historical (last 100 years) context. NOT a light read.

    hmm maybe i'll follow this Canada Reads thing this year and learn about some new books to read. I wonder if Vish will paying any attention to this for his Whatca Readin' Book Club.
