TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Jenelle "jljakobsen" Jakobsen

Posted by Craig Norris on Dec 03, 2009

Well hello everyone out there. I trust that Thursday morning is treating you well.
You may know me as jljakobsen but I am best known to my friends and family (and maybe some enemies) as Jenelle Jakobsen. You may notice that I don't post on the blog so often, but no worries my friends, I do listen every day. In fact, I am not sure how else I would get through my work day without my Radio 3. Unfortunately my job prevents me from posting on the blog as much as I would like to.

A bit about me: I am a kid who was born and raised in Saskatchewan and am currently living in Regina. I work a regular old desk job by day but by night I become a totally different beast who regularly attends musical performances throughout the city. I have been known to travel to other locales to catch a show or two from time to time. I also like to dabble in the arts and make pretty things. In addition, I have also been known to leave the country for extended absences to see how I will fare abroad. My most recent adventure involved a three month stint living in Cairo, Egypt.

My love affair with CBC Radio 3 began back in 2003 but not on Radio 2. I somehow stumbled across the online magazine and found it a most effective procrastination tool at my then job. Funny part is I didn't really pay attention to the music and just read the articles on everything but the music. That was then and this is now and boy oh boy do I love music. I have been so amazed by the renaissance in Canadian music and have been absorbing as much as I can.

I have seen a ton of live music shows this year which brings me so much joy. I feel lucky that I can go and see a live show almost once a week to see a band that I know and love. I have been thinking about what I can do to give back to the musicians to say thanks for the music. I have fed musicians, offered them a bed, volunteered at festivals etc...

My poll question of the day is: What have you done to say thanks to a musician? Do you talk to them after the show? Offer them presents? Yourself? (band-aid perhaps?) Send cards?

Jenelle! this is awesome.  It's about time you got to co-host, I think the first time we ever recognized each other in public was the day after I co-hosted.  Anyways, to anyone reading this, Jenelle is my personal concert reminder.  "Matt: are you going to ____? It's here and on this date."

To show my support, I usually just buy merch and maybe rant in their ear for a few minutes how awesome they are. Or maybe I'll drive great distances just to attend.

    Hello Jenelle and Craigphnx?!

Well I feel like a jerk, because I don't know if I have ever really said thanks to a musician. I mean I show up to shows when I can, and if I got some extra cash I will head over to the merch table. Damnit! I am such a leech!! Also, I can't seem to bring myself to really talk to them after shows.

Now the that self-loathing is out of the way. I look forward to show!

    Yes I do!

First off: Hi Jenelle my cyber friend.

Now… I made it a rule of mine, maybe about a year ago to never miss an opportunity if you can find an email, to send a little note to let a musician know that their music moved you. So whether that be at a show, or listening to the album, I don't waste the opportunity.

For example last week I finally got a copy of Jim Bryson's "Where the Bungalows Roam", and from opening it, I listed to the record 3 times through, back-to-back. Upon reading the liner notes, I came across Jim's email and sent him a not letting him know how much I loved it, and why.

Imagine my delight when less than a half hour later I get a thank you response! And the guy is somewhere in Europe to boot (I follow him on Twitter).

If nothing else the implosion of the record industry has removed the chasm of middle men in between artist and fan, and allowed us the ability to interact more directly. And I love that.

And I challenge anyone else to do so too. There's nothing better than knowing you're reaching people and they appreciate your art.

    p.s. Ya sound great Jenelle!

re: TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Jenelle "jljakobsen" Jakobsen

Live music is such a huge part of my life that I can hardly imagine who I would be without it. Suffice to say, I find it very important to thank the musicians that take the time to stop in our small city (I'm also from Regina, it's nice to virtually meet you, jljakobsen!), in whatever way I can. This usually means buying a CD or giving them a handshake post-show. I also volunteer with Regina Folk Fest, which i LOVE and it gives me an opportunity to support live music in an even more active and meaningful way.

However, there is one ridiculous and memorable way of thanking a musician that comes to mind. I really can't take credit, and in fact I don't really want to. When Death From Above 1979 played the Exchange (in what, 2005 or so?), two of my friends were so happy with the show and felt so indebted to them for putting it on that they removed the top portion of the box that our supper (241 pizza) had come in, and wrote out a detailed note to the band. They then gave DFA1979 a greasy cardboard thank you card. It was sort of hard to tell if they were pleased or not, and understandably so. It's the thought that counts, or something.

welcome, jenelle! sounds great so far.

great blog question. i do try to show my appreciation... by buying CDs, and if they are around, and i get up my nerve, i try to go up to musicians and tell them how much i enjoyed it and why. sometimes i will do this after the fact through the old Myspace or email. way, way back in the day, 2000ish, I saw Hawksley Workman at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and really really really wanted to go up and tell him how awesome I thought he was, but was too chicken.  But then I emailed him to tell him that.  And he actually wrote back, and was appreciative.  So I've tried to keep doing that kind of thing.  Because the musicians are just people after all, and it always feels good to get direct feedback from the people who came out to see and hear you.

now that i have a house, i'd like to maybe open it up to bands coming through town and/or host house concerts.  but haven't quite worked up to that yet.  do have any advice on that front, jenelle (other than JUST DO IT!)?

    @rhianna

You're in Regina too? Maybe I can stand under your umbrella-ella-ella-ella-ella.  I missed that DFA show and seriously regret it.  I'm sure a greasy cardboard box would be an appropriate way to say thanks for rocking.

I went to see Patrick Watson with my girlfriend, who was so moved that she broke down and cried and had to give him a hug backstage after.  I think all male musicians would love girls flocking to them for hugs after a show.

    My special thanks

    Hey Jenelle,

When bands I really loved would come to Saskatoon, I would make a music videos of one of their songs and give it to them on a DVD after the show, sometimes before.

I did this for Islands, Final fantasy, and Stars. Amy Milan actually got back to us with a message of delight and a great "on the road" pass-time.

You can check em out on Youtube of course.

    Morning!

@Matt: I have to admit that I admire how you seem at ease talking to musicians after the show. I was to nervous to talk to Arkells because of the young girls gushing over them.

@MikeV: Thanks! It took me a while to say thanks as I was shy in the past but maybe this will be encouragement to talk to them.

I once baked cupcakes with my girlfriend andthen gave them to Placebo before the show. It was great becasue they invited us backstage to eat with them. It was super cool expecially when you are 16. (At the Time)

Now I tend to just write letters to them about how greatful I am that they followed their dreams to make great music. Then get a picture of them with whatever toy I brought with me to the show. like so... http://www.flickr.com/photos/27785809@N07/3980552435/in/set-72157622515221976/

    hello jenelle!

this is really neat. we get to sort of "meet" listeners who can't always post on the blog. bridging the gap between listener & blog commenter! hooray! i hope you are able to sneak onto the blog every now and then today!

to your question: if i work up the courage, i will thank the artist/band afterward. i am fairly shy, though, and feel as if i am keeping them from packing up if i talk to them after the show. i almost always buy merch, though! i wish wish wish i had a bigger place. i've always wanted to have an extra bedroom & a pull out couch so i could give traveling musicians a place to stay. it is commonplace for musicians to come to town and not know where to stay, or not have enough money to rent fancy hotel rooms. one of these days...

i also take pictures, and submit them to pei's awesome monthly arts & entertainment magazine, the buzz, which gives them exposure. so i guess that is a help to them? if i feel creative, i might blurb something on the main page of peilocals.com the day before/day of the show. i've been fairly quiet there lately, though..

I don't mind talking to sweaty dudes after, they're usually just in the mood for a beer.  And super smelly, I dare you to talk to Ladyhawk afterwards.  Or even beforehand.  That being said, I had the most awkward conversation with Rose Cousins.

Matt: Hey Rose, how's it going?Rose: Pretty good, how'd you enjoy the show?Matt: uhhhhhh I really really really wanted to come but I was out of town and I had to drive here and uhhh yeah sorry but I missed all of it.Rose: Hmm, you can at least buy a cd thenMatt: Um yeah the thing is I don't buy cd's anymore.... Can I get a copy of royal's record? do you have one?Rose: NoMatt: ......I'll have your first cd too then I guess *slinks away*

I invite smaller bands to stay at my house, have some food and play with my cats.

I can't offer much normally because I am usually pretty poor but I used to live in a big house in Fredericton, NB and had plenty of people stay over all the time. Two Hours Traffic, Porcelain Gods, Shotgun Rules, Nathan Coles Outfit, and piles of singer/songwriters needing a couch.

I usually get too scared to talk to bands I really love, I totally chickened out at talking to Dave Bidini once!

@BioSpice: DO IT! I will make a special trip to your house to attend a show. Even to Ottawa!

Welcome aboard the Co-Host train Jenelle! (And Go Beavs!)

Well, Jenelle, I see that tb3 has punched your ticket, and you're on your way!  I'm certain that you had a terrific time with Craig.  Sure hope he was gentle.

And please forgive me for doing something I would normally never do: steal some thunder.  Tonight is the Civil War between the football teams of my Oregon State Beavers and the University of Oregon Ducks.  In the 113 years of the rivalry, never has this game determined who went to the Rose Bowl.  This year it does.  And it is a VERY BIG DEAL, at least in the state of Oregon.  I'm dressed, and that's dressed for work, head to toe in orange and black.  Since the symbol of Canada is the beaver, and my university mascot is the beaver, I hope all the R3 fans will jump on my bandwagon for tonight's 6pm pacific game.  Hey.  I watch the Grey Cup.  You all can return the favour!  Go Beavs!  Beat the Ducks!

Promise this is the only mention on your show's blog.  Now I'm off to work, and will listen from the comfort of my desk chair, and will comment further on your superb job.

    snacks

i'm sort of reknowned for showing up with treats, though it's typically after i've already met a musician once or twice. we tend to lean towards wine or cheeses(there's a fab artisanal cheese place near work), though i must say.  i took brownies to NYC for a Lee Harvey Osmond/ Cowboy Junkies show & i was pretty popular on thier overnight bus ride to Boston.

i'm a firm believer in sending the notes, via facebook, etc.  you never know.  i had a nice chat with Ron Sexsmith once @ the first show of his i saw (opener for John Hiatt in Louisville, KY - still a top 5 moment for me)

i just like to say thanks...but then again, i say thank you to the bus driver every day.....

In my mind I am picturing a beaver and a duck getting into a brawl. It's both amazing and horrifying at the same time. I am thinking "Territory" by Two Hours Traffic would make a perfect soundtrack for this battle.

@cathyort: So did you hug the sweaty musician you are pictured with? If so... LUCKY!

@rhiannon: Oh we totally met, I was instrument lock-up coordintor this year. Too weird. I always wondered who you were on the blog! GLS were awesome. They fell in love with Ralphie, the cat I was taking care of. Nice folks.

That's funny that you find email more daunting.

I say do it! Hell it's how we became internets friends sorta.

I always worry the after the show compliment gets lost. When there's the drunk, beer clingin', semi (or all the way) drunkards, with the typical "You're awesome" slurred cajoles.

And I don't want what I have to tell them lost in a sea of meaningless drunken "I love you mans". So I usually go home, and dig up an email on their web site and send it off.

I like the notion that they will have something more permanent, that might catch them off guard the next day before striking out on the next stretch of lonesome highway.

Maybe stevierayk (if hwas time at work) or Craig Norris could comment on some of the more memorable thank yous they've received?

re: TCNH: Listener Co-Host Initiative w/ Jenelle "jljakobsen" Jakobsen

I got to talk to some of the members of the Tom Fun Orchestra at Ness Creek last year. It was the next morning at one of the workshops. The fiddler (which is now a girl instead of Morgan Currie - or was at Ness Creek, anyway) was in a workshop and the rest of the band were hanging 'round, so I told them what a great show they put on the night before, and we got yakkin' about Ness Creek (which is a pretty cool environment, all in all). It was their first time there and they seemed to be having a good time - they were still in the same clothes from the night before, so I don't think they'd actually slept (which is easy to do at Ness).

I also sent Coco Culbertson a message on Facebook to tell her how great I thought her last couple of albums were (the Choir Practice and The Gay before that). It was kind of a babbling message and I'm pretty sure she was a little worried I was some weird cyberstalker.

    @cathyyort

your very welcome & correct.  a little homemade snack is usually @ perfect, especially if there's a drive/haul that night.  works a treat (if you'll pardon the pun).  especially for bands that are maybe vegan or not into the junk food snacks.  so helpful to them. & they are always extremely appreciative.

i have done an actual gift a time or too.  i found 'official Rodeo King notebooks' at my local stationary store once.  you know those made their way directly to the boys.

i do think what lots of people are saying is true though - @ showing your appreciation by purchasing music.  especially at live shows, where in the case of indie bands more of the money goes direct to the artist.  you're showing them more love than you know & helping them continue to be able to tour & share with you!

Sorry John, I didn't see this post until just now.

Of course, I would have to say that the wicked, limited edition Kramdens T-Shirts that you made would be on the list of great thank yous! We've received drawings from kids (one of which hangs in our rehearsal hall), once, near Christmas, a bunch of people went together, interrupted one of our shows, and gave us each a gift, then a plaque-mounte magazine cover that we had been on and it was signed by a tonne of people!

At Hillside, we had a bunch of attendees just join us on stage and one of them - Laura - actually sent us a letter..real letter...in the mail and everything...to say thanks!

Thanks sir. Sorry I wasn't meaning to put a ball on the tee, so you could mention the shirt I made. But you're welcome all the same. And come back to London to see how I top that okay? (hint: think spandex & codpieces).

But that signed plaque sounds totally awesome, and thoughtful!

And I should say, up above it may sound like I'm sayin' people should email over saying something after or before the show to the band directly. And I don't mean that if it sounds that way. I think you should exhaust every possible method that a) doesn't make the artist uncomfortable b) you seem like a stalker.

Sometimes all an artist needs – I think – to make the whole night worth while is someone saying hello in a strange town. Sure it's intimate up on stage sharing your artform, but saying a simple "thanks, great show" is sometimes the only connection we all need. And it's much easier than it seems.

And Craig's pretty much confirmed that.

I get hours and hours of enjoyment from the bands I love, so I feel it's the least I can do.

@tb3--jason mercer is great too!!  if ron ever has tim bovaconti with him, make sure you go chat.  he's fun too

@jljakobson - all are welcome.  working at the hotel has afforded me an opportunity to approach musicians because i have my discount to offer in return but i love hosting fans too.

i love treating people to the local food & sites etc & have been lucky to catch some great shows here with the likes of Melissa McClelland.  GLS (met tony through the rodeo kings).  we've been known to brunch up in Hamilton when i svisit the north too (chorizo & scrambled eggs anyone???)

my fav recent 'meet' was back in september.  cleave anderson, playing drums for Dave Celia up in Oakville.  we had a great chat.  in his honor, i'm changing my pic to the great shot we took of him post-show.  in just a moment.

    Hi

I volunteer at shows and sell merch.  Sometimes the artists are so AWESOME POSSUM and will give me a free CD which I really appreciate but I will pass them on to friends and family that haven't heard of them to make more people aware.  I also usually purchase at least 1 cd at the shows I volunteer at.

I tell them how much I appreciate their music and performances and send messages to them when the mood stikes me.  Both Danny Michel and Carolyn Mark have responded with grace and beauty.

Also I have bought a meal for some band members, but does it count when one is your cousin?

    Hi Jenelle!

I can relate to not being allowed to post at work. I bartend, often during the day and I usually can just sneak over for a quick read and hopefully a quick comment. Any more and I'm probably being a little rude to my patrons. But I often stream the station over the club's PA, depending on who I have in for a visit (some of my customers have teeny-tiny comfort zones, and only like music they've heard thirty years ago).

Do I say thanks to the band for the show? Yes, usually, and I often ask for a set list if possible, which is a good way to say hi and thank you all at once.

...See, now it's busy lunchtime at work, so I can't even finish what I wanted to sa

i LOVE Trev.  he's good people.  he's one of my enablers (ie a place to crash so i can visit toronto for shows more often).

i'll be in Ontario for Christmas (i'm an adopted Wilson) so i'm seriously looking for music suggestions for that long weekend after Christmas.  last year will be tough to top (murray maclachlan, paul quarrington, catherine mcclelland, stephen fearing, 'sons of the hammer', robyn dell'unto & assorted others) but i'm going to do my best.

  84. mcfflyer
    84

    @jijakobsen

Oooh, Janelle, I do like your voice.  Such a dramatic contrast to Mr. Norris.  You sound great on radio.  Or the internet.  And, I suppose, satellite radio.

As for your question, being in California, I do have a significant benfit over a R3 band playing in Canada, and that is I know who they are.  To be able to walk up, say hello to the members by name and tell them I like their music - and if its in San Francisco that I drove 100 miles to see them usually results in profound thanks, and sometimes amazement.  My first instance is when I spoke to Chris Murphy after my very first "Canadian" show, where I drove 900 miles to Vancouver just to see them, not knowing at the time that Sloan toured the states.  Chris was amazed that I drove to see them and thanked me profusely.  He also asked just how I'd learned about them.

Clearly the closest connection I have now is with Ryan, Molly, Jasmine, Jeremy and Ali - Mother Mother.  Seen them three times, and last time they came to San Francisco, I was there when they drove up, played roadie helping carry their gear downstairs into the club.  Had dinner with them, hung with them, and after the show, helped them pack up.  Think the world of the band - and the members.  I like them as a band - and as people.  The personal connection means so much to me - and I imagine to the band too.

Also, knowing a bit about Canada helps.  My last show, back in Vancouver was to see Two Hours Traffic.  Talking with Liam Corcoran, I mentioned that my wife and I stayed in Charlottetown on our honeymoon.  When I told him where we stayed, I said it was right across the street from the cathedral, St. Dunstan's.  Liam said, "That's where I got married.  That's my home church."  And there was a connection, as although I'm not Catholic, I did go into see that magnificent church and we talked about it.  I know this helped bridge the gap between performer and audience member.

And if there was a band I liked coming through Northern California, I have cleared it with my wife that they could have a place to stay that wasn't in the van or in a motel.  A place that has more of a feeling of "home".  Although I'm not too sure about the Kramdens.

Sometimes I leave a show thinking "I would have paid 40 bucks to see that from much further away" and believe it's perfectly okay to drop an extra $20 at the door for the band on the way out...gas money goes far.. If it is a newer band, telling them is nice, and giving them theatre ticket price for a club show is a lovely way to encourage them to come back to that venue:) Peace.

    benefits

i have the same luck as mcfflyer is refering too, in that i know of the Canuck bands when they're here in chicago.  it helps with the meeting/greeting, etc. & i have family in michigan so there's some option for shows in Grand Rapids (WYCE - Grand Rapids) & Ann Arbor.  The Ark is extremely Canadian friendly for music. i've seen people bring crowds from tiny (7 @ schubas for Stephen Fearing back in 2002.  that's just sad) to sold out (GLS, Ron, Blue Rodeo) but they always take time to sign & are thrilled when i'm familiar with other canuck acts.

I'm pretty sure that WalMart contacted Hannah's agent or whatever and she wasn't even aware was for WalMart specifically when the jingle was first made. Grant could iron out the exact details. I have my problems with the beast that is WalMart as I'm sure that most other CBC hippies here do..but I have no problem with artists making money off of them (like Hannah) or trying to stop money from going to them (like Green Day) Markets are always messy.

    Polll answer

I almost always talk to the band if I can these days, sometimes before the show but more often than not after. Sometimes I get into a conversation that holds up a line at the merch table other times they just merch around me. I can be somewhat chatty but if the artist isn't into talking past the "That was great!" then I move on.

I'm also very much a merch fiend, I've had to stop buying shirts because I have so many (bands, I love shirts but please start making other things!). I've also been known to buy the band a beer, tell them to keep the change and once double payed a show since it was a fundraiser for the next album/tour. The last couple things seem to really surprise people, I guess it doesn't happen to often but it should.

I haven't gone through all the posts yet, but I haven't seen one from Lee yet mentioning the Oregon State Beavers game tonight.  Tonight (6pm PST) is a huge interstate rivalry as the Beavers battle the Oregon Ducks for the right to go to the Rose Bowl.  I've always meant to check out some college ball but never have. When I was watching the Grey Cup stream this weekend there were a good number of Yanks watching too who really enjoyed it and commented was similar to the US college game. As dutiful Canadians we are all honour bound to support fighting beavers, wherever they may be..so, GOOO BEAVERS!!

When I make the effort to see a band I like, I want to support them - so they'll be successful and come back.  Frankly, the cost of seeing a live show is such a bargain.  Go to a big stadium show of (fill in the blank) can set you back a lot of dough.  What does going to see Phil Collins cost?  But the first time I saw Mother Mother in San Francisco, the ticket cost purchased in advance was $8!  Eight dollars!  The cost of my dinner that night was $8!  It was almost free!  And even my most expensive show here, Sam Roberts and Mother Mother was only $16.  I feel I need to support the bands.  (I just wish I had someone to go to each show with, as my wife only likes a few of the bands.)

When Mother Mother was in San Francisco in August, we greeted each other by first names, handshakes and hugs.  Ryan told me how much he appreciatd my support, and each of the other members thanked me for being there.  Ryan told me, "We are real friends now.  Next time we come, let me know, and I'll put you on the guest list."  But I responded, that I really appreciated it, but I still wanted to pay because I wanted them to return - and I want them to make a successful living.  And so, I'll take that name on the guest list - but I'll make sure I drop the equivalent ticket price on something - or just give it to them.  The gift they, and all Canadian musicians have given me is immeasurable.  It's the least I can do.

I have to say that my respect for Hannah Georgas was diminished by hearing of the Walmart commercial.  Catchy tune, no doubt, and I understand trying to scratch a living were you can, but in this situation it comes to an ethics issue.  Can you stand making a living supporting a company that routinely and globally exploits thousands of people?  Think about it.  I mean really think about it.  I don't think enough people do anymore.

I think you can say "hey lady" or "how are you lady?" or whatever else lady in a very creep free way. I have often been called "lady" by folks.

I agree that "my lady" seems a little creepy, unless you've already established a touch of goof-ballness then and use the phrase to be cheesy I'd say stay away from "my lady"

    @ hgummo (60)

    I'm back.

I found an answer to your question that seems pretty good.

"DOLLARS TO DOUGHNUTS (or donuts) - "The almost forgotten terms 'dollars-to-buttons' and 'dollars-to-dumplings' appeared in the 1880s, meaning 'almost certain' and usually used in 'I'll bet you dollars-to-buttons/dumplings.' They were replaced by 1890 with the more popular 'dollars-to-doughnuts' (a 1904 variation, 'dollars-to-cobwebs,' never became very common, perhaps because it didn't alliterate)." From "Listening to America" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982)." http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question66343.html

SAME STUFF ALMOST, perhaps better said, but without a source:

"Sometime in the 1880's, the phrase "dollars to doughnuts" became a popular way of saying one was fairly certain of something. It replaced the similar terms "dollars to buttons" and "dollars to dumplings". The new phrase had the benefit of alliteration to give it an extra kick.

The combination of the two words seems to say that the dollars have a value, while the doughnuts are essentially "zeros", or shaped after the number zero, implying that they have no value.

But as with most phrases, if you really try and figure out a somewhat literal meaning, you end up more confused than when you began! In the case of "dollars to doughnuts", it really isn't worded in a way that we would understand as a bet, and with inflation, the value of a doughnut is oftentimes greater than a dollar! :)" From http://hubpages.com/hub/Dollars-to-Donuts

There! More than you ever wanted to know. (I was born in 1948, and that expression was still alive in the fifties.)

Cam, yes, I did post something about the game, post 22, before I left for work, appologizing for the intrustion - but it was something I had to do.

Although I said I wouldn't mention it again, the answer is that if we do win, and go to the Rose Bowl, yes, I will go.  OSU hasn't been since 1965, and hasn't won it since 1942.  May never happen again in my lifetime.

But as for your second question, the answer is self evident: wear a scarf?  In Pasadena?  I don't want to burst into flame.  But I'll have to think about it should cold weather be forecasted, but odds are, if I wore one at all, it'll be my orange and black scarf that my daughter, Brittney, knitted for me as a Christmas gift last year, when she was a senior ... at Oregon State University.

Hi....Great show!!!  Jenelle is a rockin' Lady!!!  I'm a Canadian living in Central Florida, very much in to Indie music of any kind, but particularly the Canadian variety.  I try to thank bands for the impact they bring to my life by sending them messages of support through their websites, and by travelling to wherever I can to catch their live shows.  On a more tangible note, Barenaked Ladies was on tour a few years back, and on their website they had asked for some volunteers to come out before the show to promote and support their green program "Barenaked Planet".  They've given me a lot of happy concert moments over the years, so I jumped on the opportunity, cuz I'm all about the green.  It was cool, my daughter and I manned (and womanned?) a booth, passed out flyers, and talked about the cool stuff the band is attempting to promote around environmental responsibility.  Surprise....for our efforts they hooked us up with a pre-show meet and greet, a bunch of swag, autographs, pix with the band, sidestage viewing, etc.  It was a blast!!!  We've subsequently done the same at Guster and Dave Matthews shows....good times!!!

To be honest, I'd never heard it called a toque, touque or tuque before until I befriended Canadians.  To me, it was a stocking cap, something I wore when it was really cold or I went skiing.  But I like toque/touque/tuque better.

    @stevierayk

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that I'm completely innocent, no one is anymore.  I'm sure I've bought many things that weren't made by the most ethical practices, but I put a lot of effort into avoiding, or at least minimizing, those purchases.  Yes, the alternatives are more expensive, and yes, I'm priviledged for being able to afford to make those choices, but I'm also taking the responsibility to pay out the extra cash so that I'm not supporting child and/or slave labour where I can.

It's impossible to avoid, but you can try.

Plus, there's the responsbility of musicians.  I have my opinions, but they're not going to go far beyond my social circle (and the occasional blog).  As a musician with nation-wide airplay, that's a lot of people who are going to be hearing you, becoming engaged (hopefully) through your music, and potentially putting you on a bit of a pedestal from which they'll probably follow your lead.  We humans are an easily influenced bunch.

Maybe Hannah Georgas just doesn't have very strong politics, but I do, and I will therefore question where I put my support.  I hate Walmart.  Can I support an artist who supports something I hate?  And again, I know it's not so black and white, but we have to at least think about these things.

And for the record, I only buy fair trade coffee, chocolate and sugar.

    tuque,toque,touque

according to the source of all truth (wikipedia)  "touque" isn't considered a proper spelling, but "toque" is actually a different, yet similar, kind of cap

I thought it was "tuque", like the place in Quebec but I admit that I often use "toque" because everyone else does and I never bothered to check it out.

I shall never use the word "toque" again, unless I'm talking about chef's hats (which, evidently, are called toques, but not tuques)

I'm a little similar, it's like the Hidden Camera's supporting PETA. I try not to think about it when I listen to their music but it does bug me. I have a strong opinions against PETA, almost as strong as those against Wal-Mart.

Still, from what I know of Hannah's song (and boders eluded to it earlier) is that an advertising agency asked if she'd make a jingle. They told her the feel they needed and she agreed. She didn't ask where it was for and I can somewhat understand just being excited to be paid to make some music. Sure we could say that she could have asked who it was for but really, if I was hard up for cash and someone told me they'd pay me to make something, I'd be inclined to agree without asking if it was going to a giant corporation I dislike.

I feel certain there is an extra twist that Hannah was not in the information loop completely on who the jingle would be for. Of course then one could argue that an artist has a responsibility to proactively seek that information out, but how far does that go?

boders, if you're from T.bay then you would know cold, and know to appreciate a mild winter. As we were talking about on one of the other blogs, I said I missed Toronto because of the mild winters there. I kind of enjoyed scoffing at my co-workers moaning about the cold. I lived there for 5 years and don't recall a windchill below -40, and a daytime high that stayed below -20. That's easy living compared to the prairies :-) Like last winter here, I was pretty sure I was going to come home to a note from my wife saying "back in May." It was nasty.

Yeah (what you say re Hannah's song), and then it got played (the jingle), and people asked what the song was, and W-M asked her if she felt like fleshing it out into a full song. She said ya, and did, and it's proving popular..

Personally, I try not to judge artists who try to make a living. This is Canada, where it's all but impossible to make a decent living at it, at least for many.

    @jenelle

i knew that about the artwork and think that's fabiulous! (i love reading liner notes & things)

as for "band-aid" i definitely chuckled out loud. i have yet to watch almost famous, though (i own it! i feel ashamed!).

i feel that i have a slight advantage to witnessing amusing interactions on that subject (a couple of amusing stories). i fancy myself an entertainment photographer and there's a local bar i end up at more often than most places. so much so, sometimes i am there after closing. during the show i sometimes see girls *ahem* flirting with the more attractive bands and trying their best to stay after, or coerce these gentlemen elsewhere. i don't notice it actually working very often, but i'm not paying the closest of attention.

however, because i am a female photogapher and shoving my camera in their faces, sometimes that "attention" can be misconstrued (i certainly don't dress the part). there have been dudes who have made comments to me that just were nowhere near my intentions.

however, my situation has also lead to some great conversations, and one particularly great friendship. this particular person, shawn, came through in the spring, and we still message each other regularly. he has been a great support when i've needed a shoulder & advice and didn't really know who to turn to. i am so thankful to have met him.

p.s. i also think that this interaction i see with other girls has lead to some of my shyness in approaching musicians after the show. it annoys me greatly to be lumped with the raving "attention seeking" fangirls. i'm just a gal who appreciates talent and wants to give a high five. not get in anyones pants.

I don't necessarily HATE walmart, as they are the world's largest provider of jobs, and jobs are a good thing. But then again I don't agree with a lot of their practices or methods, which is why I prefer to shop locally when I can.  Keep in mind it's not like they're holding a gun to our head to shop there.

Anyways, I pulled this off Wikipedia and found it pretty amuzing.

"Penn & Teller devoted an episode of Bullshit! to an analysis of Wal-Mart criticism as a social movement. They theorized that despite the noble rhetoric, the real motivation of "Wal-Mart haters" was rooted in human psychology. They suggested that hating Wal-Mart permits a person "to feel better about themselves" for three main reasons: They "don't run a greedy international conglomerate", they aren't Wal-Mart workers, widely considered "low-skilled, minimum wage drones", and they aren't Wal-Mart customers thought of as "toothless, welfare-getting hillbillies".[119] Wal-Mart stores are unionized in every country outside of North America"

    But Jenelle -

You really have to learn how to multi-task.  I.e. to accomplish your job - and to participate here!  Sure makes my work day so much more enjoyable!
