    Hello Grant!

My favourite musical moment was this summer's Sappyfest in Sackville, NB. It was the first time I ever had been to a musical festival like that. Also, it was the first opportunity I had to meet some fellow Radio 3 bloggers. The entire weekend was about as close as it gets to perfection as you get.

Nq Arbuckle on Wolfe Island. Small intimate show and after a couple smoke breaks with NQ he agreed to end the show with one of my fav tunes "The Autum Leaves."  I twirled dancing drunk sweeping up and casting off the girlfriends of bystanders until the houselights turned on.

    Hey Grant,

I'd probably say my favourite musical moment of the year was the Das Boot show this summer in the Burrard Inlet aboard the Abitibi. Great friends, great bands (Meatdraw, Hank Pine and Lily Fawn) out on the open water. A wonderful evening.

    How was the Sloan show?

Hands down: Fucked Up winning the Polaris.  I cancelled all plans, had a case of beer, and watched/listened to the whole thing.  I was pretty bummed out that Fd Up were playing last, as I figured the probability of the last band winning was very slim.

Anyways, I f****ing love this record.  I'm a big Chad Van/Joel Plaskett/Knaan fan, but I really thought F'd Up had the strongest album out of the bunch.  So when Fucked Up actually WON the award, I literally jumped up and down all over my apartment.  After I came back to my senses, I put The Chemistry of Common Life on the record player and ROCKED OUT in my underwear just like Damian woulda wanted me to (I think).

the next day I ran into someone wearing a Fucked Up shirt, and we high fived and had a moment to talk about the win.  Apparently, I wasn't the only one dancing around like an idiot

    oops

Actually, it was when cadence weapon played in Fredericton.

I have never had so much fun at a show in my life!  We got there way to early, froze to death, had to suffer though "First words", but then, oh, my god.  There were kids in the crowd that knew every word to every one of his songs, and you could tell his apprication.  The DJ was amazing!  There were shits off, lots of "in the crowd"ness, just, holy o amazing!

    the moment…

Was meeting Jill Barber, and yourself at the Aeolian Hall show early this year. While it was awesome to meet you two, it was more amazing to see the look on my daughter's face when she realized she was standing, facing Jill, her most favourite artist ever (still to this day).

Sorry Tom Lucier, and CBC Radio3, that narrowly nudged out Phog Phest! That day was an insane package of everything I love. Including that CBC Cowichan!

    hey grant,

my favourite musical moments of 09 are as follows!

3: starting my own music review blog, www.bluegrassish.com

2: playing the infamous Cobalt Bar in vancouver one week before its closure.

1: F-ed Up winning the Polaris Prize seriously so wonderful, and then hearing what they where planning on doing with the cash prize ("Do They Know Its Christmas" for charity record) oh man what a day that was!

ps. Speaking of the cobalt, we opened for a band called Fine Mist who opened for Sloan last night! I really enjoyed it, hope you did as well Grant!

The one best moment that sticks out, was going to DOA's 30th anniversary show at the Commodore. My cousin came to town from that one (and she will always be my little cousin) so I was trying to look out for her in the mosh pit, and kept the dudes from talking to her for too long. Anyway, I went into the pit at one point and all of a sudden I felt some gorilal behind me punching my back repeatedly, and I look behind and it's my cousin going nuts and not having a care in the world. DOA was rad, too, a bittersweet night for them as the Cobalt was nearing the end of its tormented life, and Joey Shithead even sported one of the vogue new "Cobalt RIP" shirts for the whole show. Rather sums up what's become of Vancouver lately, at least from my perspective, lots of long-lost faces coming back while the city tries to rebuild itself as some stainless metropolis.

Also, I too was at Sloan last night, and even listened to their hits (on a aeries of Muchmusic Big Shiny Tunes CDs, mind you) at a party earlier, and noticed the lack of 'em! I was happy to see Fine Mist opening up the show, though! It was only a couple years ago I saw their very first show together at Hoko's Sushi Bar in the DTES.

Hands down, it was seeing Hey Rosetta! live for the second time in three months, being right infront of Tim's keybord, and him handing me the tambouring to play during their encore. I pretty much died, went to heaven and was on a two week music hight from that night.

Second best: winning wrist bands to meet Metric on their Oct 29th show in Saskatoon. Also I'm so happy that the person that canceled on going with me did, because the one who I went with totally made the night!

And listening to Polaris, and the Buckys at work.

For me, it was Joel Plaskett getting all of the audience at Massey Hall singing his cat's name (Whitefang) at the end of 'On & On & On'. What a great moment during his first show there! And of course, the rest was pretty swell, too!

    @Grant

I was surprised that Andrew was singing for a good 4 or 5 songs in a row. Was Money City Maniacs medley'ed? Did you stay till the end? They played nothing but classics at the end and for the encore. I can't remember if they played She Says What She Means, I'm not good at remember the entire set list.

I liked hearing a lot of new stuff, Sloan's been around so long that I'm sure at times they feel like they really need to push the fact that they're still making music instead of just giving a show of the songs from the 90s. I thought it was a great show, I really liked one of the new songs Andrew sung.

What did you think of the guys Chris got tossed from the venue? Justified? Overly harsh?

    Best Musical Moments of 2009

    1)   Paddling around the Howe Sound, in the midst of the summer, listening to the likes of Said the Whale and Elliott Brood. Bringing meaning to imagery of the Canadian outdoors, depicted in their music.

    2)   Watching the unstoppable triage of Hannah Georgas, Said the Whale and Mother Mother, at the Pit, back in September.  Making me proud to be a fellow Canadian.

My best musical moment was listening to the 2009 Road Trip Mix Tape special podcast as I drove from Nice, France to Florence, Italy and back again.  I listened to it pretty much on repeat the whole time I was there. The singular best moment within that was listening to The Joel Plaskett Emergency's  "Wishful Thinking" as I strolled the Promenade des Anglais in Nice on my last night.  It saved me from 10 days of poor reception of Euro-Pop.

Instead of writing some 13 page comment that nobody will notice (as usual), I'll keep it short. My musical highlight was the Western Canadian Music Awards in Brandon. Why? Dan Mangan, Romi Mayes, the Wheat Pool Volcanoless in Canada and Library Voices all came to town to play an amazing 3 day festival! My amazing friends TheRadioHead and MackenzieC made the trek from Winnipeg just to hang out with me and Loweeda. It was the best concert experience I ever had. I met some new cool musicians thanks to friends (Ali Milner and Adaline) and had the most enjoyable time I've ever experienced in the 6 years living in Brandon, from that, I've learned that I must listen to my friends on what I should be checking out for musical tastes

I'll have to listen to that. A roundtable show would be pretty cool. I remember the round tables that I would hear as a kid on Morningside and how much I enjoyed them even if I didn't necessarily follow what they were talking about. As a (somewhat) informed person now I would really get into them. Lisa is a darn smart cookie and I'm happy to hear her opine on anything..

my most memorable moment in music...

earlier this year i went to the ecma's in cornerbrook, newfoundland.

it was a snap desicion made on a monday afternoon random walk with my good friend kim. by tuesday we had our accomodations & travel figured out. weds afternoon we were on the bus on the way. we took the official ecma bus, which was full of musicians & industry folk. i am fairly certain we were the only two on the bus as music fans. the whole time was one insane adventure after another and i couldn't stop laughing.

the trip home was pretty interesting, too. kim, myself, & our friend shane were left behind on the ferry in sidney, nova scotia. our bus driver was perhaps, not the swiftest bunny in the woods. or maybe she just didn't care. thankfully, there was another ecma bus still on the ferry who took us aboard and drove us to meet up with the bus we were supposed to be on. upon our return, several people on the bus made sure we knew that they were yelling at the driver that we were still on the ferry.

i'm sure you can imagine the terror that went through my heart when we finally made it down to the vehicle deck, and it was mostly empty. being stranded in sydney, late at night, a very long way from home is not so much fun.

that said, i can't wait to (purposely) travel to sydney for the ecma's in 2010. i think kim & i are going to attempt to drag martin (suckamc) along with us.

Love Hollerado and their song Juliette.  Saw them play an awesome set with Arkells a month ago.  The Hollerado lead signer broke a string on his guitar, the Arkells leader lends him his guitar.  Then the flip during the Arkells set with him breaking a string and Hollerado loaning him a guitar.  Just awesome

My musical moment was last night.

    Hi Grant,

So this question is the exact question I've been pondering for the last 24hrs. It's like you're on the same wave lengh as me right now.

Before the Mother Mother show last night in St. Catherine's, I would have said that the CBC 3 Showcase at NxNE was when my world came together musically. But after a crazy couple of months that I've had, emotionally, and so forth, I felt that I was in a rut.

I didn't feel like I connected to things as well anymore, there was something missing. I needed to feel alive again, and after the Mother Mother show last night, it was as if my world had finally realigned and I finally understood life again and what I needed and wanted. I knew that I loved music, and loved radio 3, and had a great passion for it. But it wasn't until yesterday that I truly felt something magical and inspirational. I finally understood music. It's strange to say that, but I really did. I understood why it affects people so much. I understood why it's needed. I understood why people make it. It's all still being processed in my tiny little head, but it's a wonderful feeling. I feel rejuvenated, and I have to thank Mother Mother for it all. It was a night that I would never trade for anything in the world.... unless Sam Roberts was involved... but that's a different story :)

    love,

    Moniski :)

    Sloan!

I am so glad you said that about Sloan in the intro, Grant.

I am not a huge fan, so don't know all their music, but certainly know their hits when I hear them, and they were few and far between.  MackenzieC had seen them more than once before, and said this was the weakest show she has seen.

Sloan seemed flat, which I wrote off to travel weariness.

That said, I knew that never having seen them was a huge hole in my musical experience, so I am glad I did.

Gotta say, I was more impressed with Magneta Lane, and the passion they played with.

    best musical moment #2

co-hosting a radio show with craig norris.

honestly, never thought something like that would be an opportunity for me. it was SO much fun, and has sort of opened my eyes to the fact that maybe i really can do certain things that seemed out of my grasp before.

i feel like it's an injustice to write so little about that experience, i'm just not sure what else to day. it is definitely on the short list of 'most awesome things i've ever done'.

My big moment (or one of them when I think of more) was taking a lot of flak from my gf for staying in Victoria an extra week to stay and see the Weakerthans instead of flying to see her as soon as I was done exams.  I won't ever tell her this but it was worth it, I love the Weakerthans and it made me so happy to see them (although I was still happier to see her after 4 months of separation the next day).  I even managed to babble something to John K. Samson before timidly asking for a setlist.

If I am to point out one "moment," I would say Tegan and Sara's latest album, Sainthood. I was so on board for that ablum. Did whatever I could to help promote it and get people to join in the excitement for its release. It wasn't just looking forward to an ablum's release, but feeling an involvement with it. They (Tegan and Sara) always include their fans in all they do and it felt great, as a fan, to have this sense of involvement in the release of your favorite band's album. You just cherish it more.

    another thing Grant.... Hillside....

I know I already mentioned my Mother Mother experience...

but in terms of crazy weekends.. I would also have to include my Hillside experience this summer.

It was when I was walking and crying all the way to my car, which was parked in a random field like a 20 min walk away, in total darkness with rain falling so hard I couldn't see straight, and only being able to see my way through the flashes of light provided by the severe thunderstorm, all the while listening to Final Fantasy all the way at the main stage, was probably another insane musical moment for me. I was so frightened, and wet, and tried. But thankfully my boyfriend was with me.

    what a crazy weekend.

Oh and standing under the hospitality tent with my boyfriend and friends, and actually Dorian from Spiral Beach, when suddenly a flash of orange light scared the living shit out of me was probably another moment.

    moments

A year is a long time...

    1) New Years Eve/New Years Day... ringing in the new year last year with an amazing show at the Backstage Lounge, a thing called Last Night Stand... It was a variety of Vancouver Bands playing each others songs, which was AMAZING to listen to . They are doing it again this year at the media club... I might even be doing a new years photo booth: http://www.themediaclub.ca/shows/thursday-december-31

    2) my last show at Richards on Richards...it wasn't the LAST show, but it was MY last show... The Racoons & The Von Bondies. I LOVED Richards, mainly for the lighting, and this was an excellent show to say goodbye with. http://mcavoy.ca/RacoonsandVonBondies/  After the show I became their official after party photography, where we closed The Blue Parrot and then went to their new Vancouver home...we left when the sun was starting to rise.

    3) Other shows of note:

-my first Hannah Georgas show at a tiny coffee shop on 4th ave. - the day I fell in love.

-hearing Hollerado sing "Walking on the Sea" with the "said the whale" line and texting the boys on tour that menno said hello...technology is crazy.

-Hey Ocean playing for Gene Simmons at the Media Club

-my first Topless Gay Love Tekno Party show  (GO to the media club on Thursday)

-DAN-MANGAN-PALOOZA! i followed him around for days before the CD release show, taking shots of his promo... and of course the Pun Off between Tariq and Dan on Radio 3...-Last but not least, the CBC Open House. Pretty awesome day.

I went through a horrible musical malaise and cynicism around a series of events in the spring and summer.  I really was afraid that I would never feel that true joy of music ever again.  I was angry, searching and drifting.

It was not a live show that was my wake up call, but a simple CD.  I finally bought John Rae Fletcher's Maria, put it in the player, and went into the kitchen to do whatever.  The intensity and purity of his voice drew me right back into the livingroom, and for the first time in weeks I felt that surge of happiness that I had been missing.  It was the beginning of the road back.

Music is magic, and I am so happy that you were able to reconnect.

re: Live on CBC Radio 3 w/ Grant Lawrence: Best Musical Moments of 2009 w/ Tegan Quin, F*cked Up, Gentleman Reg, Jim Bryson, Bend Sinister

I saw some great shows this year, and listened to some great songs, many of them whilst streaming the awesome CBC 3, but my most important musical moment of the year was a very personal one.  My father has progressed to late stage Alzheimer's this year, and he has increasingly exhibited many of the extremely difficult behaviours associated with this disorder.  One day he stopped eating and became very paranoid, thinking that we were killing him.  He even jumped out of the car as we were approaching a stop light.  Needless to say, that was a stressful and emotionally confusing day.....then, for the first time, I heard the sublimely genious Hawksley Workman sing "It's Not Me".  The lyrics really capture what it must be like to suffer with Alzheimer's, and the experience of hearing that song and living that experience with that fresh perspective made all the difference in the world.  Ahhhh.....the healing power of music!!!

    Other High Points

Well I've blabbed enough on here about the Canada Day show at Harbourfront Centre so I'm trying to think of other stand out moments.  I think #2 is a tie between FINALLY seeing Corb Lund and FINALLY seeing Hawksley Workman.  Just as good of shows as I had hoped they would be.

    coming back to R3

I must say that for me it would be rediscovering R3 after some time away. It helps me get through work, and sometimes provides a needed distraction when I need to shift focus for a while.

Maybe 2010 will bring me a concert hopping friend or 2 to create some fabulous musical moments of that year... maybe... any takers?

I was going to say that my favourite musical moment was buying Sainthood and the "On. In. At." Tegan and Sara bookset... BUT after hearing Tegan Quin's story, I think I might have to change my mind a bit. My favourite moment is hearing that Dallas Green offered to be Tegan and Sara's potential donor.

I had similar time away from R3 at the end of summer, beginning of the fall. I was in a pretty bad mental space for some time. After doing something about that, I was only hesitant for a second about jumping back onto the R3 blog as everyone here is just fabulous. I can't remember what song it was, but something newer in R3 rotation came on and I remember a feeling that was like being home fill me up..and things were good.

I have two moments for 2009 and coincidentally, they were both free!

The first would be the free Broken Social Scene gig at the Harbourfront in Toronto. I don't think anything can really top seeing the majority of the band back together for the first time in awhile. I'm pretty sure most of the audience felt as emotional as everyone on stage did with seeing a whole pile of people who are not only bandmates and support each other musically, but are friends. That's probably why they're so incredible to see live: it's safe to bet that they'd be jamming in a basement somewhere even if they didn't have such the fanbase that they do. Excellent, excellent show.

Secondly, the Shwaltz in Oshawa was pretty awesome for a small event. Even though there weren't a lot in attendance, it was great to see bands like the D'Urbervilles come out and rock at the bandshell in downtown Oshawa.

    @TheRadioHead @Curls @MoniSki @boders

I have to admit, I was in a funk there for a while too, around March.  There was no shows in the near future, I wasn't really digging any of the artists on the cbc, and I was sort of wrestling with the idea that rock and roll really was dead....

Then I picked up Japandroids - Post Nothing, on a whim, and it changed my life (at the time).  Rock and roll isn't dead, it was hiding in East Vancouver.

It was right around then that I started to get into Fucked Up.  Then I had a random chance to co host.  Then the Hold Steady announced a Canadian tour.  Between those 4 things, I started to get excited in Rock again.

when I get excited about something, I jump head first into it, so I've been on a real musical binge the last few months, picking up records and going to shows and just tuning into R3 whenever I can.  I keep "meeting"  amazing people on the blog who recommend new things for me to check out all the time, so I can't really see myself being in a funk again anytime soon.

When I look back on 2009 everything that comes to mind revolves around Elliott Brood.   I saw them a few times in Vancouver this year and every show blew my mind (e.g., Juno Fest at the Biltmore).  I still think they should have won the Bucky for best live act.  Who else gives a crowd cookie sheets to bang on to the music!  Plus Mountain Meadows is a stellar album.

    @dawnh & @boders

dawnh...your Twitter stream is pretty slick yourself! Always beding my ear to new happenings. And I'm jealous of anyone who's seen The Cons...as I have yet to do so...lame, I know.

@boders - My idea is at http://tinyurl.com/y9nkhvt - where I ask OTHER venues to start scheduling live streams...as it is relatively cheap to expand their profile...the bands' profile that are playing the venue, and it's just better to expand the opportunity to see more bands playing in more venues. Exposure, visibility expands our idea of what we have access to, and what kind of incredible talent this country is producing.

I want to start projecting OTHER VENUES' and bands' live streams on the Phog Lounge big screen when I don't have any bands that night.

On a Wednesday night, do you want to stay at home and watch a live stream of your favourite band on computer speakers? Or would you go to your favourite haunt and invite some pals who love the live-streaming bands, and have some beer/food/laughs, while hearing a live show through the sound system, and watching a less-than-perfect image on a big screen?

When I finally get some takers, there are a few that have responded to me, I will be scheduling these live-stream-projections on the Phog website as I would any other show...

I think it'll catch on here in Windsor.

I also think it depends on where you live...whether this would work in your favourite venue or not.

well, musically, especially LIVE musically, I get out to very little ('til the kids are big enough to leave them alone). So, for a couple of years now it's been Ness Creek.

This year, I got to see Carolyn Mark play on Saturday, and then the Tom Fun Orchestra closed things on Saturday night. Definitely a highlight for me.

Then, just to top it off, members of Tom Fun were kicking around the next morning at a workshop, so I got to talk to them. They were looking only slightly worse for wear - I don't think they'd actually slept the night before. They were having a great time.

Ness Creek's pretty wild, because when the main stage closes, an after hours one opens, which appears to be just a bit quieter so people in the "family" camp ground can sleep. It, along with the drumming circle in a different area of the grounds, goes until about 5:00 AM (I think. I'm too old to last that late these days)

that's pretty cool that chris was watching out for the crowd like that. people who push just for the sake of pushing make me want to punch them in the throat (not really, i just wish they weren't there..)

although, as for the t-shirt comment.. i am wearing a matt good t-shirt today... :(

please don't kick me off the blog..

    @boders, taco-hater

That makes sense.  I was thinking that hatred was a rather strong emotion for a food.  I mean, there are foods I strongly dislike, but I don't think I could work up enough energy to actually hate them.  But I suppose if I were injured badly enough by a food, I might hate it.

I Hate Tacos, I hope your mouth feels better soon.

I guess I never commented on the poll

I'm terrible at these "best" thing but up there would definitely be meeting and getting to know all the R3 people (staff and commenters) better and meeting them in person. It's been awesome. Also, doing interviews and covering festivals for NxEW is a definite high light, had great talks with Dan Mangan and Language-Arts.

don't worry, you're good. I had a MGB shirt for the longest time that I bought at Value Village, it was a great find...I wore it out though..I think alot of people find him to be personally grating, and I can see where they are coming from, but I've always enjoyed his stuff

Holy smokes.  Now its you two.  This morning it was tb3 and MikeV.  Hmmmm.

Your toque is safe from me, babs.  I will not use the powers bestowed by CBC Radio3 on you.  Promise.

BTW, my musical event of the year was visiting Vancouver and the Radio3 studios.  Damn terrific time.

What a farce.  That's not what happened at all.  Talk to Paul Mokeski.  He filmed the whole thing...

    Dear various,

I Hate Tacos, please tell us?  Inquiring minds want to know!  You could end the speculation right now.

mynameismoe, hatred for food still seems excessive to me.  I mean, I very strongly dislike both pickles and olives, but I don't hate them.

food can elicit a strong emotional response for me. onions make me really angry. oh man. i'm not even joking. if you don't wash the cutting board well enough, i can still taste them the next time i use it. they are the most vile thing i've ever eaten. well, those and hershey's kisses.

tomatoes just make me sad. i don't like them, but i'll pick them out. i have to pick apart whatever i'm eating and that makes me sad..

Pete Maravich reported on the story long before Grant after seeing Mokeski's footage.

Dear same people as last comment,

mnim, fair enough.  I don't understand, but it's your food hatred!  That is, I don't understand about the onions, not the hershey's kisses.  I've been known to eat hershey's kisses, but I don't think I've ever claimed that they're good chocolate.  I don't understand the people who think hershey makes good chocolate.

I Hate Tacos, also fair enough.  But I do hope you can find the strength to not let your (presumably justified) taco-hatred colour all of your interactions with total strangers on the internet.
