This holiday season Vancouver’s
independent music and comedy scenes are coming together to bring you a very
creative December. Music Waste festival director Cameron Reed and Conor Hollor
of comedy group Bronx Cheer have created MENTAL BEAST – a video/web-series and Christmas
compilation CD.
The project gets its title from the fictitious community
radio show the comedy web-series is based on and starting on Dec 7th
you’ll be able to stream the videos at MentalBeast.com. Watch out for
appearances by Nardwuar The Human Serviette, Steve Bays
of Hot Hot Heat, and that funny, thin guy from the A&W commercials.
Part of the plot involved in Mental Beast is that the
station where the show airs is on the verge of financial collapse. To raise funds the co-hosts of Mental Beast plan
a holiday album to sell called The Eggnog Experience and that’s where the
fiction crosses over to reality.
Cameron Reed has organized over 30 of Vancouver’s best bands including Lightning Dust,
Brasstronaut, Blue Violets (feat. Neil Osborne of 54-40), Vancougar, etc. to
record either a new Christmas tune or cover an old one in a unique way for a double
album called The Eggnog Experience…which will actually sell and raise money for the Vancouver
Food Bank.
The whole project will culminate on December 18th
at The Biltmore Cabaret in CD-release party with a handful of bands featured
on the compilation and the characters from the web-series hosting the gig. You'll be able to purchase the physical CDs that night and for those not in Vancouver you can download the album on the Mental Beast website for a donation.
