CBCRADIO3.COM = 20,000 ARTISTS (& STILL COUNTING!!)

Posted by Craig Norris on Dec 16, 2009

BIG NEWS!!! VERY, VERY BIG NEWS!!! As I'm sure you can surmise by the graphic up there, I have an exciting announcement to make on the show today.

YES! CBCRADIO3.COM IS NOW HOME TO MORE THAN 20,000 ARTISTS! It's an easy number to read. Just rolls off the tongue. But when you stop and really think about it, it's mind-boggling. For instance...

:: CBC3's artist population's about the same as Cornerbrook, NL.

:: If just one artist joined each day, we'd have to be about 55 years old.

:: If you added up all of the artists (including band members) they wouldn't fit into Toronto's Rogers Centre. Not even for a concert.

But who is the 20,000th member of our family? Who will win the studio time, the SIRIUS Satellite Radio with a six-month subscription, the CBCRadio3 Prize Pack, and all the attention they can handle...? Well, you'll just have to wait and see. In the final hour of today's show I will be introducing you to that very artist!

What would you like to say to our 20,000th artist? Any advice to offer?

Check out Jasper Sloan Yip's artist page to learn a little more about our 20, 000th Artist!

    Seriously though, this is excitingly awesome news. I mean it's pretty insane to see the growth of this place in terms of new user names popping up here. But to think that we have new bands by the handfuls every week is just as exciting.

    And while it seems at times like there's a special club you need to be part of to comment (as a new user) or be played (as a new band), if you just dive into the pool here, you will find that the water is the perfect temperature, and that this is probably the best community you'll ever be part of.

    We welcome you with open arms!

    Bro-Hug time!

    I say in honour of their induction on this show today the 20 000th artist should have the privilege of providing us with a live rendering of the Wenzdee song.

    It can be somewhat personalizd as long as they retain the sanctity of the original.

    re: CBCRADIO3.COM = 20,000 ARTISTS (& STILL COUNTING!!)

    This seems really risky.  Making all this hype about a band who's just joined NMC.  Like, it's not a band just getting into the scene, it's a band that's just starting to get into the very begining of where bands start.  It's like, giving your new born a science kit after he pops out of the woumb, and telling them to go solve climate change.

    This should be exciting :)

    Well, technically, Corner Brook, NL, is minus at least 1 person at the moment.  ;)

    @someone who can math

    What's the minimum number of people, so that all possible combinations of them (such as each on their own.  Then all possbile combinations of pairs, then possible combinations of trios) result in at least 20,000.

    So, if you had 3 artists, you could have 7 possible bands?

    I have a feeling Canada might be taking this approach.

  29. themountainsandthetrees
    29

    @aaadamaa

    To be fair, i should point out that I know a few very established bands arund here who don't have a CBC Radio 3 page, but are in the process of setting one up, so you never know who will be the 20 000th artist...

    Oh and if people can be in any number of band you actually only need 8 people to make 20,000 bands. In fact 8 people could make over 40,000 bands (8!) if they all appeared in a different order. Now it is slightly more complicated if you can only have certain people play certain instraments and only have certain numbers of people in bands,

    Good Morning!

    Sweet!!!, the other day Lana's show (I think...) was asking what we use to wake up in the morning. I said "Usually my cell phone, but sometimes I'll set my webradio link to R3 to start playing at a certain time..." A perfect Wenzdee to wake up to a darnn happy sounding Craig announcing the 20000th artists on R3 mark passed...20000 is a pretty sweet, round, base 10 construction of a number to celebrate! And I rolled over to the blog BEFORE work, so even more fun...there isn't a whole thread to need to read when I roll into work. Hope that everywhere that needs some snow gets it and that everywhere that needs a cold snap break gets it too (It's currently 8C and raining in Vancouver..)

    @Benoit

    That is taken into account with the figure of 8. It's all possible unique permutations of 8 people. 7 gives slightly too few. 7.7 is pretty close but obviously you need a whole number of people.So yes, the members of BSS could more than make up all of the bands on R3.

  54. aaadamaa

    Wilderness of Manitoba are from Toronto, and are AWESOME. I have their latest release, and it was pimped to me as Canada's Fleet Foxes. And I have to say, that was a pretty spot on comparison. Definitely worth the listen!

  61. gregory.paradis
    61

    @aaadamaa (36)

    Actually, one person can start as many musical projects as they like, with or without collaborating with others. Therefore, the minimum number of people required to form 20000 bands is 1... but that answer sucks, and is no fun at all.

    More closely related to your original posting, any given pair of musicians can form 2 bands; it depends who is leading the project, and who is composing the songs. This extends to any size group of musicians. I assume here that you can swap around the roles of any non-lead musicians without forming a new band. On this basis, I propose the following 12 valid combinations, assuming 3 musicians (A, B, C):

    A

    B

    C

    AB

    BA

    BC

    CB

    CA

    AC

    ABC

    BAC

    CAB

  62. Bio Spice

    @the mathematicians...

    so what you're saying to craig is: 20, 000 isn't all that exciting so simmer down?

  63. mynameismoe
    63

    also @aaadamaaa regarding death avengers

    i WISH it was them! oh that would be so great.

    there has been absolutely no talk about it, though. i would assume that the artist/band in question would need to be contacted before-hand, and that is a secret not easily kept in charlottetown.

    mind you, i have sort of been in hiding the past week, so, i may just be too far out of the loop.

  64. fumblebee
    64

    @aaadamaa

    well you shoulda said that.

    In that case you can use binary to simulate the number values. Since you need a way to represent at least 20,000 separate cases. In your {a,b,c} example you can use 3 bits. So the permutations are

    000 (but we discard that one)

    001

    010

    011

    100

    101

    110

    111

    so you need 2^3 or three people to make 7 bands so to make 20,000 you need at LEAST that many vaules. So to make 20,000 unique bands you need 15 people (2^15 is 32,768).

    How many individual artists are on R3 now..sure 20000+ performing entities..but the population would be how many entries the 'members' table contain..so Scott Muc or someone other big brain in the back end..what's that number..then we can get some good city comparisons going!

    R3 artist counter freeze conspiracy + question for #20000

    They froze the R3 artist counter at 19987 on the home page last Friday. I mined Google and did a regression on the (remarkably) linear artist rate of change data trend.

    The result: I predict that number 20000 signed up a 16:21 on December 13, 2009.

    I have 2 questions for #20000:

    (a) What date/time did you sign up?

    I don't back down from this position. Not now, not ever.

    A brief, unrelated diversion

    I linked to this for Techie Tuesday yesterday, but a lot of people weren't around, so here it is again.

    There are some minor issues with it that probably won't get fixed until/unless I get really annoyed with them.

    The link is in my profile, if you need to go looking for it later.

    Yeah.  I guess I could list them:

    1. The recently played and upcoming lists display near the top of the page, and opening them scrolls the page up.  This will probably annoy me and get fixed first, but that still might take a month or so.

    2. The list of web radio stations and the tracklisting in playlist mode display near the top of the page, but opening it doesn't scroll the page, which is almost more annoying.  This will probably get fixed at the same time as the above, because it's similar.

    3. In playlist mode, the track progress thingy is too wide.  This may never get fixed, because I rarely listen to playlists while reading blog posts, plus it's only slightly annoying.

    My advice to the 20,000 artist is to remember to update their music on the site. It is a sad event when you know that an artist has new music out and yet not even one new song appears on their R3 site.

    Congratulations to #20,000.  You have joined a pretty remarkable community of creative talent that is the heart and soul of this country....well at least the heart.  R3 is the place to be to get edumucated about all things musical that top 40 radio can NEVER offer.  No pablum here.

    My advice would be to get your moms to sign up as R3 listeners so she/they can stay on top of any chatter about your progress.  And she/they can also pimp you here.  :o)

    Off Topic - White Elephant

    Off-topic, but it's still WCW, so is there such a thing?

    Office Christmas Party is tomorrow night.  There's a "White Elephant" gift exchange.  You know the thing where people can steal opened gifts, or pick an unopened one, etc?  Usually there's a mix of nice, horrid, and just plain weird items, all under $20.  What's the strangest/best gift you've seen in a White Elephant exhange?

    @gregory.paradis

    Hey Gregory,

    There's a couple of reasons we froze the band total on Friday - one of which is mildly embarassing!

    The first reason is that we didn't want to stop bands signing up because they were too far away from 20,000 to make it.  We thought that once we announced a prize and publicity associated with the milestone, some people might try to game the system or hold off signing up until it was 19,999 bands.

    The second reason is the lame one - the Q & Hopefully A show with Vish talking about the 20,000th artist was taped last week when I was in Toronto - but it only aired Monday (we're having to pre-tape some shows in advance to deal with holidays).   When we taped the show, I think there were still roughly 40 artists needed to sign up to reach 20k, so we figured we were safe for a few days.  However, as signups picked up last week, we panicked because if we went over 20k before the show aired, all the references to 'we're approaching 20k' would make no sense.  And to top it off, we couldn't re-tape the entire show.  So we decided to wait to update the counter until after Monday and the show had aired.  (Clearly, we could have used your graphing / statistical prowess to help us better estimate exactly when we'd reach the milstone! ha ha)

    Finally, by having it hidden, we could indeed protect ourselves in case the 20,000th band was a cover band, not Canadian, etc.  Luckily, that wasn't a problem and I think you'll all be thrilled to see who the artist is and listen to some of their tracks.

    How's that for a LONG and convoluted explanation?

    Thanks for digging into 'The Mystery of the Frozen Radio 3 Artist Counter' (originally aired on Scooby-Doo in early 1980s...)

    We're actually going to be working with a REALLY talented data-visualization guru in the new year to take a lot of the data about the music and usage of music on the R3 site and try to make it more useful.  I'm kind of nerding out thinking about the possibilities of it.

    There is, indeed, a Pasadena, NL.  I grew-up there just shy of the beach.  It was a wonderful place to be a child, but horrible as a teenager (unless you liked drinking a lot, which I did not).  Thankfully I discovered music (drums, more specifically), and that's the end of that story...

    I just saw your (long!) counter freeze posting (#125)... must have scrolled right past it earlier (I was trying really hard to concentrate on the graphs I am really supposed to be working on).

    Outstanding... I knew there were shenanigans involved! I originally mined Google data because I wanted to try to be number 20000 (just for shits and giggles) last Friday, before any prize was announced. Then I got distracted. Then I heard Vish announce a prize on Monday morning, and finished my graph, and realized that I was (probably) too late, and that I had stumbled on a counter freeze conspiracy on my hands.

    I really do feel like I am in a Scooby Doo episode now. I still cannot believe you would admit to your counter freeze shenanigans so readily. Only on CBCR3. This restores my hopes that love and truth will prevail in the end.

    Counter freeze conspiracy it on air

    Ha! What a fun day this is turning out to be...

    @craig: Were you planning on admitting to the counter freeze the whole time, or were you inspired by the all conspiracy talk?

    Explaining it on the air, verbally, was much easier than typing it out here!

    re: CBCRADIO3.COM = 20,000 ARTISTS (& STILL COUNTING!!)

    I could endorse JSY. I never noticed how quickly the artist pages surge in numbers. Or was it just because a lot of bands wanted to be the covered #20 000? Shoulda held out for 30 000!

    You are tb3 approved.

    Great little pop song.

    @R3 techies (Scott and his team)

    Am I crazy, or has the refresh comments feature been going wonky? It's typical use refreshes the page and auto scrolls to where I had last been reading. For a bit it seems that it has just been refreshing to the top of the page though..then I thought it was fixed, but now seems the same. Is this a Chrome specific issue, or a me issue (seems to be refreshing properly in Firefox)?

    I might just be crazy...now it seems to be jumping down..but I swear that it just didn't...maybe I'm twitching from too much coffee too early

    Mine seems to be fine as long as I click on newst comments at top of page.

    @boders

    No, the new website has never gone to the place you were.  But if you clicked the "newest comments" link at the top, it will scroll to the newest comment after refreshing.

    At least, that's how it works for me in Firefox.

    My workaround has been to bind a mouse gesture to Reload Frame in All-In-One gestures.

    @themountainsandthetrees

    so you are experiencing the same symptom? ie. press refresh (comments, not browser refresh) and it's at the top of the post? that's reassuring to know I'm not completely out of my mind.

    re: CBCRADIO3.COM = 20,000 ARTISTS (& STILL COUNTING!!)

    I don't find it refreshes properly in Firefox with any regularity. Sometimes it returns me to where I was and sometimes it just goes up to the top of the blog

    Yup, those are the symptons, except just then, it went back to normal.  I blame the ghost of NMC.

    Firefox refresh jump

    Isn't there a tendency for this to occur the "first time"? As in the first time after a complete page refresh, or a re-grab from a bookmark?

    the music of Jasper

    I have just finished listening to all the tracks on JSY's artist page. I enjoyed it very much.

    I will be stalking itunes for the release and buy the album.

    Refresh

    Here's more specifically what I see for refreshing: after you click the refresh link, it goes to the last part of the page you followed a link to.

    If you clicked the blog post title on the main page, that link took you to the top of the page, and that's where you'll end up after refresh.

    If you clicked the "Oldest Comments" link or the comments link in the blog post, that took you to the top of the comments, so refreshing will leave you back at the top of the comments.

    If you clicked the "Newest Comments" link, that took you to the last comment, and you will go to the last comment after you refresh.  This is probably near where you were, but not quite there.

    I have never seen the new site take me to right where I was after I use the refresh link.  It often takes me to the last comment (because I used the newest comments link), and that's often close to where I was (because I usually used the refresh link at the bottom), but that's as close as I've seen it get.

    @Absotively

    thanks for that clarification...I figured you'd be jumping in with a response before anyone else! :) I will make sure to hit the Newest Comments link in the future...
