Wrath of Khanna: National Hum – The Jesus Lizard Resurrected! + More!

Posted by Vish Khanna on Nov 10, 2009

Howdy. How's it going out there? I am pretty swell today, in spite of my baseball playoffs withdrawal. I need a good set of opening rounds and semifinals and a championship series soon. I've decided all regular seasons are a useless, time-consuming distraction in our lives. I mean c'mon; you're telling me I need to watch a hundred games of whatever sport just to see who might have "home" advantage in the playoffs and get a chance to play the worst-seeded team in their respective division? Those are the stakes? I can't think of anything less riveting than this. Except for maybe the opening of this blog post...

One of my favourite bands ever, one of the best live bands in history, and one of the scariest bands to ever form, are all the same band: The Jesus Lizard. Before they broke up in 1999, I got to see Austin/Chicago's the Jesus Lizard a number of times and one of the first interviews I ever conducted (for my university's school paper) was with their endlessly amusing and musically brilliant vocalist, David Yow (remember when I went on tour with Human Highway and the Magic in March and I ran into Yow on the streets of Austin during SXSW and interviewed him? Any one?). So myself, and many, many others, were very excited to hear that the band were reuniting with their original line-up in tact for a 2009 tour that coincides with the re-release of all of their Touch and Go albums. They've played Vancouver already but are playing Toronto and Montreal this week and I'm going to the Toronto show (with Guelph's Brides opening up!!!). Needless to say, I'm very excited to welcome the Jesus Lizard's wondrous drummer Mac McNeilly to the show today to ask him all about this. Please listen!

Mac McNeilly of The Jesus Lizard

What bands from yesteryear would you most like to see reunite and play live again? What's the point of the regular season? What local musical events over the next while are you most excited about?

    Well, helloooooo.....

    I would like to see Marty McFly's band The Pinheads get back together. However, we all know that will never happen.

    Other than that I wouldn't mind seeing a one Thrush Hermit play again or perhaps Marty McFly can get back with Marvin Berry & the Starlighters. Maybe? I don't know? Bwwaaahh..sorry it's just  this reunion business can be a dangerous proposition can it not? If it works its good, but if it doesn't work its just awful.

    As for regular season without it there would be no playoffs, because the playoffs would then be the regular season...see how it works now? Anyways, you are kind out of luck on playoff watching chances. Unless you like the Grey Cup?

    Musical events I am excited about coming up include an upcoming Julie Fader and Brian Borcherdt show on the 22nd. Until then Im gonna chill.

    Marty McFly was in the Pinheads. Then he went back in time and was in Marvin Berry's band. True story

    Grassy Knoll and the Magick Bullet - out of my hometown! by the time I had discovered them it took me threatening the local record shop owners with torture to obtain their album. They have a song about bacon! I mean, BACON! come on now.

    Good news for me is Wax Mannequin and Rae Spoon at Casa del Popolo (a venue where I first learned pick up lines in french and when I was living out my Richler-esque dreams)

    Good news for you, a couple of the guys from The Grassy Knoll are now playing in a band called "The Fine Print". You can find them in Facebook.

    WM & RS

    Like Misterrupert, I'm excited about Wax Mannequin and Rae Spoon, I believe that is next week here.  This week is Elliot Brood, which should be fun.  I'm also looking forward to the day off tomorrow, so the real provinces can show we remember by sleeping in, drinking coffee, and being lazy!

    Re:plies

    @Misterrupert: Sadly the Facebook is the only place I know of. Though Dave, the drummer, and Tom, one of the guitarists played in my little brothers band (Curiosity Shop) back in the day are in The Fine Print. So I can probably ask one of them where to find them on the web outside of FB. They've played 2 or 3 shows in London already.

    @Vish Khanna: The Black Shire Pub. Upstairs. Gonna be like a house show.

    Rae Spoon

    Can I just say I love Rae Spoon even though he decided to NOT play Fredericton. It's okay I mean you can just play Moncton...I guess if that is what you think is the right thing to do.

    correction

    I would just like to say that I have no reason to believe Rae Spoon personally decided to forego a Fredericton show.

    Black Shire

    Used to be The Last Drop.

    It's kind of always been there, but I think not until the APK (Alex P Keaton) closed that the Black Shire started putting on the occasional show. First show I actually saw there was only a few months ago for The Fine Print, oddly enough.

    The YSP!WSD! / Think About Life show, should be at Call The Office. It's a bit of a weird venue choice.

    I'd like to see the newly re-reunited Pixies, or Pavement would be kick ass. A have a soft spot in my heart for Oasis because I've never actually got the chance to see them. I wish Pride Tiger would get back together, they're face-meltingly awesome live.

    I am also in baseball playoff withdrawal. Now I'm stuck reading about which minor league call ups get traded to which farm team in the Grapefruit league. Thankfully the CFL playoffs are in full swing!!!!!! I hope all of you have your playoff tickets to support the local gridiron team.

    Tonight: Rah Rah. Typical Tuesday night in Regina.

    i'm still upset over missing YSP!WSD! and rah rah. i think i even had two chances for rah rah!

    @mattyj pixies are (is?!) a good choice. i've been trying to think of a really good one. i can come up with local acts, like out from under & eyes for telescopes, but i don't know if anyone here knows who they are.

    we get an eyes reunion every christmas anyway. makes me pretty happy!

    also, i'd like to put ou there that shotgun jimmie kind of owns my heart.

    @mattyjames2001

    I saw Oasis, twice. Trust me on this, you missed nothing.

    And I saw them long before they hit the hype machine. They're just boring, and there wasn't much more to their live show that couldn't be gotten out of cranking up their albums.

    Blur opened for them the one show and totally blew them out of the water and back to the UK.

    I'm almost as upset I'm missing the Eyes For Telescopes show as I am missing Mother Mother!

    @marty

    i feel that's a pretty accurate comparison for missing eyes.

    but, for me it has always stood for the gathering of so many great friends over christmas, and is reminiscent of a really great time (when they played baba's every weekend). i am not a fan of christmas at all so it's a bit of like a ray of sun. especially when it can be so difficult for friends to gather during the holidays.. friends are very important!

    I saw them a number of times at the Horseshoe, definitely the most agressive and exhilirating shows I have ever been too.

    @tb3

    I actually had full intentions of seeing them at the V-Fest in Toronto last year or whenever, but I got this job and the starting day was like the day I was planning on leaving for the big smoke.  They didn't even play long I think.

    Long story short, I had their Morning glory tape in grade 4 and it rocked my world, well still now.
