What’cha Readin’? Saying Goodbye to Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records! + December Book News!

Posted by Vish Khanna on Nov 27, 2009

Hey hey! Hope all is well. As always, it's bittersweet when we have to say farewell to a book on the What'cha Readin' Book Club but this is exactly why there are seasons in the sun. Yes indeed: It's our final day to discuss Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records by John Cook, Laura Ballance, and Mac McCaughan, so if you have any thoughts on it, please don't be shy about them.

Special thanks to Sharmeen who sent in a slew of questions about Our Noise. John Cook will be on the show later to answer a few of these queries so please hang tight for that.

John Cook on Our Noise: John Cook

John Cook answers questions about Our Noise: Questions

As for December, next week we begin to hear from listeners and musicians who responded to my call for books that evoke the holiday season! Oh, and some festive indie-rock too. I'm excited about this...

What are your final thoughts about Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records? Any more ideas for books that speak to my call?

    having trouble

I'm having real trouble thinking of a book that evokes the season... I guess I haven't read anything that sticks out in particular.  But I'll keep thinking about it.

My junior high ex-boyfriend gave me a copy of "Survivor" by Chuck Palahniuk one christmas, and I fondly remember not wanting to talk to him until I finished it. Still one of my favourite books of all time.

Vish, If no one has said The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (I know it is an actual Christmas book), then I might cry.

    J.R.R. Tolkien's...

...The Father Christmas Letters.  You're maybe not looking for something this literal or kid-oriented.  But it's pretty cool... essentially a picture book of the letters and drawings that the Father Christmas visiting the J.R.R. Tolkien household over 10 years or so left for his kids.  It includes armies of red goblins that ransack the present stores at the North Pole (incidentally coinciding with hard times during World War II, I think), letters written in new alphabets that need deciphering, etc.  The main character is a somewhat hapless polar bear.

In some ways, the Anne of Green Gables boxset and Little House on the Prairie boxset also are holiday-y... in that they reside in my old bedroom in my parents' house that I stay in at Christmas time, and make for happy holiday reading... and Christmas comes up often in those books over the course of their lifetimes.  Harry Potter series for that matter, too.

It's possible that I haven't done enough grown-up reading to really answer this well.
