Today's Guests: Woodhands

Ontario/ Hawksley Workman/ Algonquin Park

Quebec/ Martha Wainwright/ The Black Sheep Inn

New Brunswick/ David Myles/ Hopewell Rocks

Nova Scotia/ Joel Plaskett/ Cabot Trail

Newfoundland & Labrador/ Hey Rosetta!/ Gros Morne National Park

Yukon/ Kim Barlow/ Dawson City

North West Territories/ Dana Sipos/ Tuktoyaktuk Pingos

Nunavut/ Lucie Idlout/ Road to Nowhere

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE LIST?  Have you been to these places?

Post your comments on the blog or email feedback@cbcradio3.com

The debuts don’t end at Songquest, also coming up,  the World Premiere of Woodhands new track CP24 (which is also inspired by Canada, yeah!).  Dan Werb will be joining me to explain.  Have a questions for Woodhands? Post them on the blog or email feedback@cbcradio3.com

I am excited for this list, some I've heard of and some I haven't, that goes for people and places!

I've been, or practically been, to a few places on the list.

Cabot Trail NS, it's a beautiful road around the edge of the island of Cape Breton, and on your way you can stop by the Red Shoe Pub owned and operated by the Rankin sisters, yes the ones from the part of the family that records lovely music.

Hoodoos in AB, well I've been in the badlands of Alberta and they're super cool!

I've been to Uclulet BC, don't remember if we hit up Tofino, I was 11 and it was just over a decade ago...

Looking forward to the playlist that spans the country!

so, this was "commissioned" right? where the listeners picked the artists and what they should sing about, and then the artists wrote songs about them?

do the actual songs have such unoriginal names?

    Algonquin

I am insanely excited for Hawksley Workman's song about Algonquin Park...I have gone camping with my family there for 25 years now...so a song about the Park + Hawksley Workman, should be AMAZING.

I get giddy just listening to The Hip's Lake Fever, where they sing "the stars of Algonquin"...a whole song about it?! yes please!

i embarrased my self on singing sands beach PEI.  i was walking along the beach and saw a family who wanted me to take their picture.  for some reason i assumed they were francophones and said "you want me take click click?"  i felt like an absolute idiot when the father figure said, in perfect english, "uh, we just want you to take our picture."

i feel like the "rocky mountains" was a serious omission....

I've been to some of the more obsure places on the list such as the Tuktoyaktuk pingos and Dawson city. The pingos and the mackenzie delta are like nothing I've ever seen. Indescribably beautiful. I had the fortune of seeing them from the air and land.

I've also been Algonquin Park, the Hoodos and Tofino

    @ Abso (re 120 on Grant's)

No, I get your explanation. We simply don't tend to equate "political correctness" with the same thing, you and I. No worries. I understand how for you, the bug is with people who are rude under pretense of not being constrained by p.c.ness. That's tehen simply an excuse, and a por one.

But I do stand by what I ventured earlier. It wasn't that anyone who disagrees with "the sexiest" is p.c., so much as the disagreement sounds p.c. to me, and it is true, I think, that political correctness is not at ease with matters sexual.

(For me, a p.c. thing is saying to someone who talks about "the handicapped" that you shouldn't say that, that they are "handicapped people" or "persons", when handicapped people would never say that, and don't mind -- some people who deal with handicapped people mind that. Same with going nuts over older popular terms and wanting them replaced with so-pretended "less offensive" terms. That is what bugs me, as it's finally an order to self-censor.)

re: Today on Lanarama: CBC’s Songquest Debuts! And the World Premiere of Woodhands “CP24”

I've heard a little bit about this contest, but being out the country for the past 9 months I guess limited my exposure. It seems like it could be very cool though. I would think as an artist it would be really tough to write something on demand, but I guess that is why they are the musicians and I am the fan.

I would have to say I'm surprised that the Blacksheep (although a great music venue) is the spot for Quebec. I'm really excited for Joel Plaskett writitng about the Cabot Trail (as a NSer) and the song about the pingos (hopefully it can make me visualize this great place).

I've been to 9/13 of these places only missing Gros Morne, Nunavut (which are both high on the list) and the two spots in the Manitoba and Saskatchewan (where I've been but not these specific spots). I'll chalk that up to a strong interest in Canadian geography, but also my Dad being in the navy and moving coast to coast also helped. I was very excited to see someone else posting about the pingos and the Mackenzie Delta above. Both are absolutely awe-inspiring. But after spedning 8 months in Inuvik, I'm basically in love with northern Canada, so I have a bit of bias.

re: Today on Lanarama: CBC’s Songquest Debuts! And the World Premiere of Woodhands “CP24”

hey, maybe I can give Grant a controversy for tomorrow :-)

I have to say that I don't really see the point of this. Canadians don't seem to have a lot of trouble singing about Canada (and I don't mind that at all). Seems a bit contrived to say "hey, you, singer/songwriter/band, you sing about this place"

I think it would probably be quite easy to put together an album of existing tunes about places in all 13 provinces/territories, possibly a few albums

(do people still use the word "album"?)

I just drove through part of NB without much thought in to Fredericton and back to Halifax... oops. Next time I'll heed Mr. Myles' advice!

  27. Benoit from Ottawa
    27

    @ krib: platitudinous song titles

There's been a "mistake" in every case -- those are the subject matters chosen, not (necessarily) the titles. For instance, as mentioned above, the Black Sheep Inn song is called Four Black Sheep. David Myles' song about the Hopewell Rocks seems to be called Drive Right Through. I don't think Lana was properly informed.

  28. Lana Gay
    28

    @krib @ Benoit

Thanks! I was going by the info given.  But for the sake of the blog, I am referencing the places they are writing about, not the song titles (in my province/ artist/ place format).  The song titles will (now properly) roll out during the show.

Been to Hopewell Rocks (though it was High Tide) and Tofino.  Personal list of most inspirational places (I've been to) in Canada...

New Brunswick  - Downtown Saint John  - Head Harbour Lighthouse on Campobello Island

B.C.  - Joffre Lakes Prov Park  - Cathedral Grove, Van Is.  - Coast around Tofino

Quebec  - Old Quebec  - Jacques-Cartier "National" Park  - Backroads around the VT border.  - Rupert River Rapids on the James Bay Road (now extinct?)

Ontario  - Tobermory and Bruce Peninsula National Park  - Sleeping Giant Provincial Park  - Downtown Sault Sainte Marie (great small city)

Nova Scotia  - The whole fricken' province!

re: Today on Lanarama: CBC’s Songquest Debuts! And the World Premiere of Woodhands “CP24”

okay, makes sense. I knew those were the places - just seemed a bit ordinary to have the song title be the same.

  32. Benoit from Ottawa
    32

Okay, people who are just finding out about the 13 songs

Listeners were asked to come up with a long list of places and performers for each province and territory.

Listeners were asked to reduce it to a short list (5 of the two for each).

Listeners were then asked to vote on their choices (subject and performer) for each.

For Québec, listeners of this anglophone webstation (more from Ottawa than from Montral, I wager) picked the Black Sheep (not a big surprise), and Martha Wainwright. They almost, but didn't, pick Montreal. They didn't pick a francophone artist.

    Q.E.D.

P.s. In addition, these are 13 new songs. For me, it's hard to knock this contest, considering the good results.

P.p.s. The feed is abominable right now: cuts out often, and also skips ahead, seemingly.

Its supposed to be "The" Yukon, I don't care what the government types say.  It just doesn't sound right, I'm from Yukon.  I'm fron THE Yukon, as in The Yukon Territory.  One day I'll get elected premier and change it back.

As for subject, Dawson seems to get all the attention in the Yukon, but it is quite the place full of history and what not.  Although the Yukon is full of magical and mysterious places its would be hard for me to pick just one.

    Ok, cool.

I'm still not happy about having the disagreement labelled PC, because there are some good arguments, and that still sounds like a dismissal to me; but I understand better where you're coming from.

(For the specific example you brought up: I do know some people with disabilities who very strongly prefer "people first language".  I don't doubt that there are some who don't mind the term "the handicapped", but you can't always extrapolate from a small sample.  And as for replacing older terms, I think sometimes they become so offensive that there's no choice but to replace them.  Keep in mind that "retarded", "moron", and "idiot" were once neutral terms for people with IQs in specific ranges.)

re: Today on Lanarama: CBC’s Songquest Debuts! And the World Premiere of Woodhands “CP24”

I grew up a stone throw away from Waskada and I am VERY happy to see the small dying farm town make the list of the CBC SongQuest.

I am really hoping Chantal Kreviazuk comes out on top for Waskada as I believe its the unsung communities that nobody has ever heard of that need to be recognized. Look at the song Runnin' Back to Saskatoon, until the Guess Who wrote that song, Almost NOBODY had ever heard of Moose Jaw or Moosomin, but now each and every Canadian knows it thanks to that song.

I have friends from Waskada, and since it's only a municipality away from where I grew up, I'm proud to see the local guys in the running. I know in the end Waskada won't come out on top, but I hope it brings recognition in the town.

Waskada is the classic dying prairie farm town, the railroad was removed years ago, the town's only school on the verge of closure in the next few years, homes are being left abandoned. It's sad to see but it's the reality of almost any small town Canada.

I grew up near a similar community called Pipestone, none of you have heard of it unless if you have family there, work on the oil rigs or are obsessed with Canadian geography. Pipestone has nothing of significance, all it has is a cattle feedlot, one corner store, a gas station and that's it.

I really hope Waskada will win as it will bring alot of interest to the community, just as Neil Young brought interest to his father's hometown of Cypress River, Manitoba when he wrote the song Prairie Wind.

And I hope I dont see Radio 3 (or even most of its fans) showing its bias towards one particular artist, because I hope the best song wins in the end! But of course I'll be biased as it's my home turf.

Lastly, remember to support your local farmers however you can, and check out the movie The Stone Angel and The Lookout, many scenes were filmed in this region.

I think the Songquest was great. I also think that if they'd said "Hey Canadian Songwriters, send us songs about Canadian places that you love" they would have gotten some great stuff and alot more than 13 but that doesn't make for much of a contest and it's harder to promote it/ let people know about it. I did sense some awkwardness with a few of the artists who wouldn't necessarily have chosen the place they got to write about.

the word police can dictate from on high all the want...we'll create the language we want collectively in the rend regardless. That's fine if it's 'Yukon Territory' and not 'The Yukon Territory' but that doesn't alter my sentence "I'm off to the Yukon to search for gold!!" I have to say, Hey Rosetta! is my favorite from the compilation, though I really do love them all.
