The R3-30 FunClub Salutes Its 2000th Member feat. King Khan & Joel Plaskett!

Posted by Craig Norris on Nov 21, 2009

What started as Jijou Fantoche's attempt to ingratiate himself to Pedro and I has blossomed and grown into something that no one (especially me) could have imagined.

This week, The R3-30 FunClub reached a dizzying 2000 MEMBERS! Yes, 2K of you have helped us become the Number 1 All-Canadian Independent Music Countdown in the world. While we have no specific metrics to prove that statement, we just have to assume that it's true.

To mark this momentous occasion, our 2000th Member, Dale Schimpf, will be sitting in to co-host the entire show. We'll also hear from Joel Plaskett and I'll talk to X3 Artist of the MonthKing Khan, about the recent drug arrest in Kentucky.

As the first member to join the Fun Club

(and I know this to be true, as I have a Castro Hat as proof) I wish to offer congratulations to the 2000th member.

I recall lamenting at that time that I was the only, lonely member.  Pedro assured me that one day our numbers would be legion.

He was correct, it has come to pass.

I have to come clean, I hate working Fridays.  So I usually miss the R3-30.  But when I do, it's always fantastic.  Just like today, Joel & King Khan?? That's flat out awesome.

And as a random coincidence, I've listened to a Joel Plaskett, King Khan & BBQ and/or the Shrines record all this week on the stereo.  And tons of Bruce Springsteen.  Maybe you can get The Boss for next week?

    Technical suggestion: a PREVIEW button

Sorry I'm off topic, but flashes of brilliance good ideas blindingly obvious conclusions only come so often. And you don't look a gift muse in the face. Even if she looks like a horse. Or something.

I was on another site, posting along; it doesn't have a spellcheck feature. Fair enough.

What it does have is a PREVIEW button as well as a SUBMIT button. Just seeing one's message as it will appear (except it shows your entry boxed, on yellow background, rather than the usual white) -- just seeing it in final set-up makes it easier to pick out mistakes of all kinds -- including stupid logic; you can then edit in the usual box, which remains accessible.

Could the same be done here without too many side-effects?

The more words I write, the more I'm thinking: give 'em this link. If you visit, scroll to a '5 COMMENTS' and click on that. The comments box will show you what I've described.

    Dan Mangan

Does anyone else think Dan Mangan (In Sold) sounds a bit like Ed Robertson from Barenaked Ladies? Just wondering.

Yeah that song does kind of have a BNL vibe to it.

    hmmm...interesting.

This nice lady replied to me about my longing for an independently scrolling blog window. That doesn't appear to be in the cards, but perhaps they will entertain your excellent idea.

    Correction:

"a little widget that follows you down the screen, so you can always see what is playing - we have this feature add on the list, but this will likely be added by next spring"

Yes!!!! Hahahaha, that's the guy. I'm not sure why the name slipped my mind. There was a hardcore band from Winnipeg called Guy Smiley. Thanks.

I took Fridays off work just to be at home for the r330... no not really but it works out perfectly!

sounds like a good vinyl week...Arkells closed out their encore at last nights show in Vancouver with some Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark...excellent cap off to a fantastic show. I've been lucky enough to see them three times now and am amazed with how much energy they throw into every performance...Grants admonition that we forget about first half of the year shows is really ringing in my ears as far as Bucky noms go...i didn't pick up ear protection yet though, so maybe it's actual ringing

in other news, as long as AlexOfAnders isn't yanking my chain, i won a scarf yesterday!! I didn't hear Lana's message on air but he told me he heard my name...no email yet though, and i think shes' not in today..if i could get confirmation from someone at R3 you'd really kick my weekend off great

i still have to call on trivia tuesdays to try and get my name in for the cowachin draw but now can call during all questions, not just the scarf one. should i somehow win a second scarf though it'll be heading in the mail to you mattyjames seeing as your phone is R3 cursed

It's either Guy Smiley or Mitt Romney depending on how you look at it.

    Guy Smiley!! That's the one..

thanks abso..that was tickling the back of my mind too. Did he host the "This is Your Life" show?

I love when Daily Show and Colbert use muppets and sesame street callbacks...man they know how to pander to my age bracket..

    jingles...

have we talked, on the R3-30, about why there aren't jingles for cities like, say, Ottawa?  I can see, say, not having one for TORONTO... anyway, is there some kind of scientific formula for determining which cities get jingles and which do not?

    thanks and also thanks,

    me

    another jingle question!

How come some cities get a wider variety of jingles than others?  Edmonton gets "E-ville" and "I see Dedmonton" and "the city of champions", but Halifax always has the same one.

Jingle business, we've got some jingle business

I don't often make it in for the entire R3-30 but it seemed like there was a decrease in the jingles. I remember back in the day I used to almost spout out the jingle whenever anyone mentioned the city. I think I still do it for the Hammer though.

Feels like ages since I've heard the leather town jingle.

It would be cool, if possible, to have CBC R3 listeners make up some jingles for their hometowns.

    The Wooden Sky

Anyone here seen these guys live? I saw them with Elliott Brood in October and they were phenomenal. The bassist was the most fun to watch.

I have no idea, but there are so many things.... I'm in Regina so it could be something Rider's related, or Potash as always been a great joke 'round here.  (Regina home of Potash - hack, hack, cough, cough...)

I lived in Regina for 22ish years. I figure as long as the jingle didn't have "The city that rhymes with fun in it I'd be happy." I can't stand when people say that. It was funny for a week, then it got old.

It was a blast co-hosting the show with Craig and Pedro. A friend came and sat in with me. He was in the control room and I was in the studio, looking at each other through the glass. We were in stiches half the time. I was trying not to laugh into the mic too much. Craig and Pedro, you make a great team. Thanks again for the invite. It was cool checking out the CBC building too.
