Coming Up: The Novaks
Last night I MCed a MusicBC event
here in Vancouver.
This event is for artists and managers and labels to all mix, mingle and make
important contacts. But there I was in the corner having a discussion about
Twilight and why teen girls (and so-not teen girls) love vampires.
We all have our theories. I found this question posed in the most recent Esquire magazine: “From Twilight
to True Blood and now The Vampire Diaries, is it vampires that so
many American women love... or just gay men?”
I’m not really sure I buy this, being a
very-out lover of Morrissey and Montgomery Clift, I never got into vampires,
even back during that first (second, third? – I really don’t know) cycle with
Anne Rice’s Interview the Vampire. I never, ever got a single heart flutter from
Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise as bloodsucking buds.
But the conversation got me to thinking
about something much more important, namely The Vampire Trend and what
supernatural being is about to be exploited?
The vampire thing must be getting ready to fall on a stake, and there’s a werewolf already in the new Twilight movie. We’ve
done witches and wizards in Harry Potter; and Zombies really just never seem to
die no matter how many times they get shot… in yet another movie.
So after spending some very nerdy-feeling
hours searching out a new idea, I’ve settled on the Half-Elf. In Norse
mythology, this is the offspring of a human and Elf.
I think this has everything you need
for a future trend: multi-cultural, a hotness potential (it would be too
difficult with gnomes, trolls or leprechauns) and their ability to meld into
regular society, thus a photo shoot.
What creature is set to get the Hollywood treatment?
Let me know….
